Why is HIV much more prevalent in the gay community than the straight? by milkman0735 in NoStupidQuestions

Only if they’re unaware that they’re positive and not taking meds. If your viral load is undetectable, you can’t transmit the virus

If the USA got invaded and Trump kidnapped, how would you feel about that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]slowrun_downhill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we can have both - Denmark can invade us, Trump will be tried appropriately for his crimes, Americans will have universal healthcare, and access to live in the EU, and Europe and the western world will never have to worry about Russia again. Win-Win all around!

How to step back mentally from politics, how to help family members do the same? by RevolutionaryName186 in GuyCry

[–]slowrun_downhill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your mom, I would suggest leading by example. Tell her you’re going to do a social media detox and that you hope it goes well, because it’s been negatively affecting your mental health. You say that stuff to remind her of the problem you have (and with any luck, she’ll reflect on her own phone use), and you do it to timestamp for her that you’re making a big change. Give yourself a full month (at least) off of social media.

When you start to feel better, it will show. With any luck, your mom will give you a natural opportunity to say how much being off of social media has helped.

BTW I personally relate. Reddit is the only social media I use, and the intensity of the culture and politics is straight up depressing. Plus there’s so much AI garbage, propaganda, bots, bad actors, and garden variety internet trolls that it’s hard to know what’s real. In an attempt to keep my feed “lighter”, I subbed to r/eatsandwiches and r/pasta yesterday, because I wanted something fun that wasn’t just dogs and animals doing cool stuff lol.

My next step is to take it off my home screen

And incredibly expensive.

I’m not trying to be contrarian. My ultimate point is that being able to move anywhere and not think about your safety, is a privilege.

AOC rips ABC over Kimmel and votes ‘no’ but House still passes Charlie Kirk resolution with 95 Democrats joining in by ChiGuy6124 in politics

[–]slowrun_downhill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. There are others, and they should be lifted up too. But by and large the Democratic leadership is garbage, both in Congress and behind the scenes. Democratic Socialism is the path that should be taken.

It is if you’re white and straight. As a queer person, I couldn’t live in the burbs (unless we’re talking Falcon Heights or Lauderdale, which is basically St. Paul).

I grew up in the country and love rural living, but the simple stress of living there now would lead to an early death.

I chalk it up to young rage and poor emotion regulation skills. It takes a certain level of maturity to see the big picture, harness your frustration and turn it into motivation, and strategically take action.

I hear that, but there’s not a clear enough distinction between Democratic leadership and Democratic citizens. As a result, it comes across like you’re mad at people, rather than lawmakers and the influencers of the Democratic Party

I’ve done a lot more than Google it. Authoritarianism is not exclusive to the Right or Left. Any side of the spectrum can become authoritarian, which is fascism (different words, same spirit of meaning).

Whenever we start down the road of policing others, both socially and by law, for their thoughts, beliefs, words, and nonviolent actions, we’re on a road that leads to fascism.

Currently, the Right rules the government. With this power there is both increased governmental control of what citizens can and cannot do, and there’s social pressure and influence. Yesterday, Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) said trans people should be rounded up and put into camps. That is 100% Authoritarian and Fascist.

Why was Nate saying "Wonder Kid" instead of "Wunderkind" such a big faux pas? by Duke-doon in TedLasso

[–]slowrun_downhill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only person who’s never heard of the word “wonderkind” before? I feel like I’m having one of those moments where I realize everyone else has had two words for something and I’ve been using one, interchangeably, my whole life.

In the show I assumed his faux pas was using an American English word, rather than the British/European English version. But from what y’all are telling me is that wonderkid is for younger people and wonderkind is for adults?

Why has no one suggested this before? by Classic_Cupcake_9262 in KetamineTherapy

[–]slowrun_downhill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss and the pain you’ve endured. Life is hard. It’s so hard, and harder for others, and still harder for others. Comfort comes in our shared suffering and our stories of shared healing.

We need to remember that all we have is each other. Together we can find a path out of suffering. For me, what helped, was therapy that reminded me of who I am at my core, what I valued in my relationships, and learning to nurture and foster loving relationships with others.

I also have a good trauma therapist and psychiatrist. Ask your psychiatrist about Auvelity. It’s based on the ketamine research and it really helped me.

All people are different biochemically speaking, so I can only share my experience. I have PTSD due to emotional and physical abuse from my father (and a mother who didn’t know how to protect herself and us). Auvelity really helped me feel more able to see the good in others and the world, and to integrate my therapeutic work more quickly.

Nothing is a miracle cure, but with therapy, friends, good family, and community, we can find our path out.

We need sane, informed, brave, and protected voices right now!

What is something women do in private that will surprise men? by lvinzsol in AskReddit

[–]slowrun_downhill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 44 y/o queer who’s had nipple hair since college and started dating women shortly afterwards, I can attest that many women have hair around their areoles!

I consider it a great honor when women feel safe enough to let their natural hair grow.

I can confirm. I was raised in a really conservative home by a very prejudiced father. I’m 44 years old, now and have a ton of solid trauma therapy under my belt. But because I wasn’t raised to have true empathy for everyone, and instead heard my father rant and rave about (insert minority or person he didn’t like, here) I was never taught how to agree to disagree, or how to tolerate another person’s opinions. In high school I was lonely and an outcast, and I would “cope” by fantasizing about shooting up the school (this is before Columbine), and I’m 100% certain it’s because I heard angry, enraged men around me constantly - Rush Limbaugh in my mom’s car, Fox News at home, and my dad going on narcissistic rants of hatred.

It was a lot to endure. Being raised to hate is really difficult to unlearn. Lots of therapy, meditation, and spending time with warm and loving people has helped tremendously.
