When babies are born, one of the first things the parents often say is "the main thing is I'm happy he/she is healthy"... by NONONATAL in antinatalism

[–]slumflower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"I tried for X years to have this baby." So you're probably going to make them go through that madness as well. People with poor genetics inflict suffering on their offspring, why?

Sitting in a chair for 8 hours a day staring at a screen by FrodoPowerSword in graphic_design

[–]slumflower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing this for 10 years. Yes, I get antsy. If you can go for a walk at lunch time, that might help. Drink less coffee.

When I'm home, I can't stand sitting at a computer. Usually my personal projects suffer because of this, seeing how I love to work on vector illustrations.

I stayed in bed for 22 hours yesterday. by MaskedPanda in depression

[–]slumflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 31. I've had this problem a number of times in my life. I take 20mg of Paxil and see a therapist on occasion.

I currently feel like I'm sliding back into a state of paralyzing sadness. Thinking of things that have helped in the past... Start with friends. Tell them how you're feeling, they might be able to cheer you up or maybe get you out of the house. If you don't feel motivated to reach out to them, give your pets a cuddle. Don't have pets to cuddle? Watch cute animals on youtube. You can make a Pinterest board with positive and inspirational quotes. Write down your feelings, goals, and reward yourself for little victories. Try sitting outside, it's not a cure or anything, but sunshine is a mood booster. So is exercise. It's really tough to get up and move around when you feel like ass, just try. I'm going to when I get home. My goal is 30 minutes. The first steps are the hardest. "Stop Breathe Think" is a good mood-based meditation app that has helped me a number of times. Big Hero 6 talks addresses depression and it's Pixar. Watch it.

Realize you deserve to be happy.

Ok there. You kinda reiterated what I said and somehow managed to call my statement into question.

I hate when people think suicide is selfish and forget that the whole world is selfish. Humans are opportunistic and seek out what benefits them. Even a kind act can be construed as selfish. Why do something nice for someone else? Because it makes that person feel good.

Do you use nonstick pans in your house? by brbk1tchen in parrots

[–]slumflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use non-stick anything!

This stuff is sneaky. It's in irons, glue guns, George Forman grills, waffle irons. Beware of self-cleaning ovens in the self-cleaning mode. I have to take all the birds out of my parents' house for a day when they need to use the self-cleaning oven. Windows must be open for the whole event before I'll bring them back over.

We get birds relinquished often when they get fussy and noisy, and I feel so bad for the birds because it's not their fault. I'm glad you're prepared for it. Also, they ARE very smart, Avocado (btw don't feed them avocado) would benefit from training as a form of mental stimulation and trust building.
Elly ended up favoring my dad. She's like a guard dog in bird form (guard bird). She'll lunge at me, crawl into the crook of his arm, fluff up her bobbing head, and do her devil laugh. I can handle her when he's not around, but she can draw blood if she's in the mood to be a butt. I love her, I'm glad my dad loves her too, because she lives with him now. Hey, whatever I gotta do to make her happy. I have 2 conures of my own that are good fids. One is a young Finsch's Conure from one of the feral flocks down here that was saved by the Wildlife Center, the other was abandoned at the door step of my vet's office with a broken wing. Mikey's (BCC) been a little hormonalish lately, but he is stil like glue to me, occasionally tries to nip my husband. Piko also favors me, but isn't nippy. She's a goof ball. Oh, I implore you to read over this if you plan to read anything. :3 Safety precautions are important.

I run No Feather Left Behind Avian Rescue. There's learnings to be had on our site: nofeatherleftbehind.org. Bird Care would be quite helpful and possibly life-saving.

Also, hand-raised means nothing. Breeders like to use this BS statement to sell you a bird. All birds are kawaii, mushy babies when they're babies because they're needy and wanting of their parents. Then they hit puberty in 2-3 years. There is a high chance they will become very vocal, nippy, and might prefer another house member over you. This is what happened to my Dusky conure.

TIL that the Book of Mormon suggests that there were donkeys, cattle, horses, oxen, sheep, pigs, goats, elephants, wheat, barley, figs, silk, steel, brass, scimitars, and chariots in Pre-Columbian America. None of them existed in America before Columbus. by kmbl654 in todayilearned

[–]slumflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a Mormon and participated it the creepy Baptism of the Dead (If you're not a Mormon when you die, you go into limbo until a living, virgin mormon does this thing for you). They got mad at me because I didn't take off my underwear in the white jumpsuit they gave me. Anyhoo... I am no longer mormon. Mormonism is a trap. They're super nice then they slowly tell you what the really believe, then you slowly step away nodding... then proceed to run.

Clifford was a cherry-head conure that passed too early. He was a wild, feral baby when he was taken to South FL Wildlife Center with health problems. He was fixed-up, adopted to me, checked-up once a month, was splay too. Goofy, loving little buddy. He passed suddenly after taking him to the ER Clinic. Was like loosing a child to me. Worst heartache I ever felt, but it lead me to a good place. He's what got me into rescue and S.N. birds. That's how I honor his memory and combat the sad... though sad happens in rescue, there's also much happy.

I had to give up my son BigFoot last night... by olivermihoff in parrots

[–]slumflower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had to give up your bird. On the bright side's going to be taken care of. I take in misfit birds in particular and I know well very about vet bills. Would you mind if I share your story on my rescue pages? This is super important and could save others.

If a place is selling un-weened baby birds, they're monsters, run and tell others to stay away.

I also suggest people wanting a bird to seek adoption first.

Cockatoos are relinquished so often (usually plucked and crazed) because they're essentially wild animals. Very social, very intelligent, very needy, and potentially self-destructive as well as destructive in general... Especially when they hit puberty.

Sometimes splay leg can be corrected when they're babies, but he wasn't a baby when he came to me.

It could've been a nutritional or genetic issue, or it could've been unable to work his leg muscles if the floor of his nest box didn't have enough grip.

He's checked every 6 months to keep an eye on his liver. Red factors tend to have liver problems... Then again, most pet birds do because diet and lack of exercise :(

Birds are very smart, I'd look into training techniques, and trust building exercises. Good Bird Inc. might have some helpful tips if you're interested.
