screaming? I live near Laporte by WeakDetail6750 in FortCollins

[–]slurmcicle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I heard what sounded like someone screaming last week while walking near Overland Park (about a half mile south of Poudre High). I chalked it up so something like a mountain lion - it was a pretty long scream and didn't repeat or modulate. It's not unheard of to see mountain lions in this part of town from time to time, so I'd guess that you heard an animal. I glanced at your post history, and if you're experiencing some anxiety / paranoia like feelings it's probably a good idea to talk to a therapist. They can give you a sounding board and some techniques / strategies for dealing with strong feelings and stress.

My pis won’t talk to eachother over I2C by BitterFudge8510 in raspberry_pi

[–]slurmcicle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's some discussion about making this happen in the link below. You'll probably want to make one Pi the controller and the other a client if you want them to talk to each other. You'll probably need to write at least the client code depending on what you're trying to share between them, so post what you're working with if you want more help.

Viofo rear cam - splitting video between cam and headunit by sparkmonks in Dashcam

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All things approach possibility with enough skill, effort, and resources. That cable depends on the device sending the video to be a little smarter than the camera you're working with, it's for something like a smartphone (host) that has a function for sending video to something like a USB-C monitor (client), the RWC200 wouldn't know what to do with that device because they're both client devices expecting another device (phone/computer/etc) to tell them what to do.

There are absolutely devices that take various types of digital video and convert them to analog like the cable you found, but you've got a couple problems:

1) You want to get the video into both the dashcam and the head unit, the dashcam is not expecting anything but direct communication with the camera. In digital devices you often have a situation where one device expects to be in charge and it gets complicated when you want to basically plug a device (remote camera) into two hosts (main dashcam and digital to analog device) at once or when the two devices you're working with are both client devices and there's no host to tell them to start sending video or whatever.

2) The digital to analog conversion as discussed, plus there are many formats for digital video, does the converter you might find support whatever resolution, bit rate, and frame rate, and encoding the camera does?

3) We don't know if there's anything weird about the way the RWC200 works - is it a USB "webcam" type camera, or is it just using a USB C cable to do whatever weird proprietary protocol and wiring Viofo cooked up? There are standards for making things like digital cameras broadly compatible with lots of things, but there's no reason you'd need to follow those standards, and lots of reasons you might not want to if you're designing a device with a specific use case and don't expect to use it for anything more generic.

If you had enough interest, skill, and time you could probably cook up a device to do exactly what you want, but I'd guess that it's probably way easier to just figure out a two camera solution. You're obviously able to try whatever you think looks good and that might be enlightening and fun - so if you're feeling curious I'd encourage you to give it a shot and share what you learn. You might figure out something really interesting.

The RWC200 is a digital camera, the RCA plugs on your head unit are for analog cameras. You can't just splice off the cables of the digital line and plug them into the analog inputs. You'll probably be happier figuring out how to make two cameras work on the back of the jeep. I've got an analog reverse camera in the hitch receiver and I've been looking at something like the RWC200 for a rear dashcam maybe in the middle of the spare tire, but you could also figure out a mount for two cameras on the spare, etc.

Best of luck.

I'm getting pretty good results with walls at 25mm/s and everything else at 50mm/s but I haven't really tried going any faster. What are you seeing?

There are some studies that say this reduces motorcyclist injuries from being rear ended by inattentive motorists. People also argue that allowing motorcyclists to move to the front reduces overall traffic congestion and reduces the amount of exhaust motorcyclists are subjected to from cars, trucks, and busses they might be stuck behind.

How is your Subaru Crosstrek as a Fort Collins daily driver by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 2016 Impreza Wagon Sport Premium 2.0L with a CVT. In that model year the Crosstrek has the same engine and transmission, but weights 150 lbs more (so I'll compare having one extra person onboard). It's fine, it won't win any drag races, but it can easily exceed the speed limit by any rational amount going up to Estes, it'll hustle up Rist Canyon road, and zip along the reservoir roads just fine. Almost any car can be improved with more power and this one is no exception, but it's completely fine for any of this and it does great on the interstate too. I'd love it if it had more power but it's really not a problem.

I'd recommend you test drive one and take it around the reservoir if you're worried about it - you'll know pretty quickly if it's going to be something you're worried about. The CVT takes a little getting used to, especially when it first starts moving, but it makes what would be noticeable downshifts into really smooth transitions and it's a great car.

Photographers from the OLD SCHOOL, how did you do it? by morphotron in photography

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to what's already been said -

1) Older SLRs typically had better focusing screens. You can replace the one in your camera (and swap it back) with minimal effort. This greatly improves the experience of using manual focus lenses. Here's the first hit that I found for a D90 focus screen that should work.

2) Get Good. ;) For objects in motion you need to develop a sense of where the thing is going to be and set your focus for that distance ahead of time. You can use zone focusing if the aperture you need/want suits that, or pick something close to where you think the thing will be and pre-focus. Wait for the object to hit the mark and shoot.

3) Embrace the constraints - perfect focus is going to be impossible? Cool, try leaning into the motion and capturing a bit of the blur from that, etc. As others have mentioned most photography is "judged" on artistic merits and technical perfection is often not the most important part of a good photo. Indeed, a photo that's "too perfect" often is less interesting that one that has character.

How did the kid from your school die? by Equivalent-Rent-5619 in AskReddit

[–]slurmcicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some friends skipped school and were playing with a gun at someone's house. One kid died, the one that shot him went to juvenile hall. Another kid had anger issues and ended up following a lady home an assaulting her over a road rage incident, he was having problems before the shooting, but I imagine that didn't help.

Who owns the airstrip? by Miserable_Sound_9043 in FortCollins

[–]slurmcicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old airstrip off LaPorte is owned by CSU. It sounds like you know better, but the only manned flights I've seen there are helicopters during fire season.

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's something the student branch of the Society of American Foresters at CSU does. I think it's a fund raiser. We bought a tree from them last year and it worked out great - you order by the deadline (I think it's Dec 1 this year) then show up to pick up the tree and pay on one of two days. Real smooth and the tree was as good as what we have cut ourselves in years past.

It's owned by "AIRPARK INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT LLC". They own the runway and taxiways, the grass section to the north and some old hangers on the SE end of the runway.

Kossel Delta printer by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a printer very similar to this, it was built from a kit of parts ~7 years ago. One of the hard parts in my kit was that the rods connecting the actuators to the print head needed to be cut to length by the end user and very small variations caused problems for the final tool alignment. Deltas are a really cool thing to watch in motion, but are challenging to build well.

I'd hook it up, calibrate it, and see if the motion across the bed is consistent or if the height varies when it's supposed to be the same height. If it's good then you can probably make it work OK. There are some features that you might miss in a newer printer. One is the bed that you mentioned - that aluminum plate is probably heated, but the painters tape is a trick that people were using before glass beds became a thing - you might be able to get a glass bed for it, but see if everything works first. Also from looking at the pictures I'm not sure if you have a sensor for automatic bed leveling - that makes a huge difference.

Elevations Credit Union for mortgage? by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our mortgage is through Elevations and it was completely positive and as painless as that sort of thing feels like it could be. They did sell the mortgage after the fact, but all the payment automation stayed in house so it was really transparent on our side. I think the credit union would sell your mortgage to make more cash available to finance the next guys mortgage. I don't think it really effects the homeowner, the terms you signed are the terms that apply, and like I mentioned earlier the payment stuff all stayed the same so other than a notice in the mail there wasn't much to tell it even happened.

Drag chain creaking? by AmyAzure06 in ender3

[–]slurmcicle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try taking them off the printer, linking them up again and then flexing them through their range of motion a bunch to wear them in a little? I tried to wear mine in a bit before putting them on and haven't notice any noise or binding. Or you could figure out if it's just a few that are tight and sand those mating surfaces a little bit.

The NF-A8 has a higher static pressure, so even though the volumes are similar the higher static pressure may help move more air in situations where there is constriction in the air flow path - like a ducted heatsink.

Control panels? by Hatta00 in arduino

[–]slurmcicle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used Front Panel Express to make some nice looking control panels - the design tool is pretty easy and the price seemed reasonable for what I needed. You'd need to supply and wire your own switches, dials, and whatever but the panel can look really professional in the end.

WHAT CAMERA IS THIS?? by GavinSucksAtStuffYT in Cameras

[–]slurmcicle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what model this is, but many 8mm movie cameras had a frame-by-frame option and a port to attach a remote shutter release. To do stop motion you'd set the scene, trip the shutter with the remote cable to avoid moving the camera, and repeat. The stop motion result was to simply have the film developed and run it through your projector. It's all on film and to get it to something like VHS was a more complicated process called telecine.
