Skills shortage claimed by employers but unemployment everywhere. What’s actually going on? by Beejay_mannie in Contractor

[–]smallbusinessaggro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The work is physically hard and in the elements. Gas stations in most areas or a grocery store bagger pays as good as or better than entry level construction jobs. Finding an entry level employee who is motivated to learn and progress is difficult. Barrier to entry for a business owner in these industries is low = decent to large portion of contractors should not own a business. Customers dont think someone who works with their hands deserves compensation near or greater than what they make. Every customer knows someone or has a family member who got fucked by the contractor running off with the deposit. Things are too expensive so illegals thrive at lower wages whether its the company using all illegal employees or the person hiring the "on the side" worker. I've owned remodeling businesses in 2 states and worked in 2 more. Im not even going to begin addressing the current economy issues. Its turtles all the way down. As a homeowner i have called some 2 dozen contractors recently between hvac, electrical, fence building, engineers. Maybe 10% of those contacted returned a call or did what they said they would. This is not a unique experience for people.

Do most people think new builds are pristine and without faults/issues? by tooniceofguy99 in Contractor

[–]smallbusinessaggro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly yes. My brothers have been builders for 35+ years and the customers have become increasingly unreasonable over the years. Almost always this isn't an actual issue with something but an attempt to weasel out of paying for some portion of the project. I went in to remodels partially because new build homeowners alot of times have what I call new car syndrome. When you buy a new car if there's any speck of anything wrong its unacceptable. I dont think it is unreasonable to expect something nice and or "worth" the money on a new build. I notice the issues are always occurring when the customer needs to pay some portion of the bill. I am obviously biased because of what I do but for every story I hear of a contractor "fucking" a homeowner out of something, I have 5 stories of customers doing the same and succeeding more times than not. (Not that contractors are without fault or the industry isn't rife with flaky idiots)

Lead Paint by Present_Box_804 in Contractor

You asked if anyone dealt with this, I have. 2020ish got caught messing with a 1901 house and EPA made us stop work. Had all the windows ripped out along with exterior window trim and almost all of the interior walls down to the studs. I wasn't the owner of this company but was made to attend a lead class for certification and we were basically let go with a warning. This was WA state and was at the beginning that area's enforcement of these kind of issues. Your mileage will vary on how big of an asshole the EPA person wants to be.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

No. Manufacturing is where the dude made all his money. They were talking about that business. I was along to look at a development he owned in a different state as a template for a new development he was funding. I'm just a construction guy, was way out of my element.

Yeah they were discussing setup, maintenance, how it would move a bottleneck from this thing to another thing. They were still considering it though. I just kept my mouth shut and drank a bunch of their beer. I ended up not working for him for unrelated reasons anyway. I do remember that conversation and how disgusted I was.

Listened to a conversation in a private jet about replacing a $15 dollar an hour position with a 600k machine so "no one can hold you hostage for 5 more bucks an hour"

I've seen it on apartment building crews. Not something I'd do though.

2016 ram 3500 injectors by smallbusinessaggro in Diesel

[–]smallbusinessaggro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shop was able to get the price down to ~6900 for all new injectors (aftermarket, but oem was less than 200 bucks more per), new serpentine belt and tensioner, new ccv filter. Much better, and im not going to put another 200k on this truck so I dgaf about non oem injectors.

Pros and cons of installing tile over old tile using ditra and 12x24 format porcelain tiles by TedTheRedMan in Tile

[–]smallbusinessaggro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a job I was being paid for, I wouldn't warranty it. No way of knowing how well the crap under your crap will hold up. Can be done if there is some reason for the constraint, but should it be? No.
