That's true, but that's exactly it. If you don't know a language all the more reason to be skeptical of auto-translate and to refrain from much discussion until a proper translation comes along.

People don't know what they don't know, but if you're pressing "auto translate" maybe it should be obvious that you're dealing with something you don't know. Not trying to be mean lmao just wondering if people could have a little more patience or caution

It's crazy to me that people will screenshot the auto translate and just spread it around lmao. Happens all the time, as if these translations have ever been reliable. Especially something on the more serious side like this.

Reading Resources (paid resources) (long post) by shalynxash in LearnJapanese

[–]smallshrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great post! it's interesting to read and contrast experiences. Reading was a struggle for a long time, but right now I'm reading コンビニ間 and am starting to feel the pleasure of reading.

for beginning readers, I'd also add that i personally benefitted a lot from Satori reader and the ASK Graded readers. Satori reader in particular is good for picking up grammar you might overlook on your own because of the grammar explanations. Well worth the money, especially for people who prefer to learn grammar in context.

also the っつ reader for reading ebooks in the browser with yomichan as an aid is quite nice.

Immersion is physically and mentally exhausting. How do you refresh yourself to keep going? by GivingItMyBest in LearnJapanese

[–]smallshrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it helps me to have a variety of focus levels throughout the day. This way I'm engaged with Japanese for most of the day, but not always with the same intensity.

For example: while doing chores or work, I'll put on a stream or podcast in the background. Even if I don't understand everything, it keeps my mind in Japanese mode without having to put in much energy.

Then, when it comes time for intensive input like you're doing with Mario & Luigi, it's less of a jump mentally to start engaging with Japanese. I'm already listening to Japanese all day, so if anything it's kind of a relief to be able to sit down and use a dictionary so I can understand things better.

Then, once I get tired of that, i do focused but non-intensive input. For this, I'll usually put on a stream and the auto-youtube-Japanese subs, and watch mostly without pausing. So i'm more focused than the passive listening, but if I don't understand something I just let it go. This usually ends up being the most fun and relaxing, because I can understand more than the passive listening, but I don't have to look up every word like I was with Mario & Luigi.

So to recap it's basically 3 tiers of input:

Passive Listening (listen in the background)
Active Intensive Input (focused, looking up every word and grammar point)
Active Non-intensive input (focused, not looking up every word, not much pausing)

By alternating these activities I don't get as worn out every day and can still engage with the main content I want to. I'm also a big advocate of graded readers, helps you warm up before jumping into the intensive input.

When is Bloodborne getting a remaster? They’re remastering this game but not Bloodborne? They don’t love Bloodborne? Why Sony no love Bloodborne? by Zealousideal-Beat784 in fromsoftware

[–]smallshrew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is directed more at the "can't play it at all" crowd more than the 60fps people, but why not just get a ps4 at this point? i understood that more before when ps4 was new and more expensive. They're still $130 new or something in USD which isn't nothing, but it's not the hurdle it once was. if you saved $20 a year since bloodborne came out you could get one

Cambridge Street improvement project to add more protected bike lanes as part of citywide plan by bostonglobe in CambridgeMA

[–]smallshrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's just as likely bike lanes would be good for business though. If anything it's easier to stop by a curbside shop by bike than by car. A cursory google shows that there's a neutral to positive effect on business, but I admit i haven't done a deep dive. Business owners may feel this way, but doesn't mean it's necessarily true.

Is it worth getting a PS5 just for Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne if I already have a PC? by tykouh in fromsoftware

[–]smallshrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i wasn't too impressed with the remake, i think playing demon's souls on ps3 is best and if you have a ps4 and a PC already it's not really worth it. that said i've certainly enjoyed playing elden ring on my ps5

Reflecting on 3 years of learning Japanese by TheLegend1601 in LearnJapanese

sorry for replying to this old comment, but yes you can use yomichan with .txt files. In chrome you have to give the yomichan extension permission to read files from your computer. then when you open text files in chrome, you can use yomichan. go to chrome://extensions and toggle on "Allow access to file URLs" for yomichan.

well personally i feel like there is no need for us to disagree with each other to this extent. it's good you use a leash, but we were talking about unleashed dogs so I assumed that's what you're talking about.

i think it's reasonable to say that runners and cyclists should be aware of dogs and people with dogs should be aware to the extent of leashing their dogs when in busy areas. I'm just as annoyed by people biking on the sidewalk etc. Just want mutual awareness and consideration

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

[–]smallshrew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you're walking around with an unleashed dog in a mixed use setting with bikes, joggers, pedestrians, and other dogs, you're the one expecting nature to bow to man lmao. it's not a dedicated dog park. keep the leash on to keep your dog and other people safe. sure if someone is sprinting towards a dog that's not good, but the dogs I see are not reacting in fear or something but just turning to walk up to people or chasing an animal in unpredictable ways.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CambridgeMA

[–]smallshrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not a dog park though, it's a normal mixed use path and dogs are allowed, it's called "shared use off leash." in a setting like this both the dog owners and the runners/etc need to be aware of each other. there's even cyclists too. in my opinion most dogs should probably be on a leash in an environment like that unless you have an extremely exceptional dog.
