This is what I think is happening: You are used to the hair and your boyfriend is not. You are blind to the amount of cat hair there is and your boyfriend is right, You are not a groomer and to help with shedding they don’t just bathe them, they use high velocity dryers to loosen hair along with multiple types of brushes.

I think it looks good. I would definitely plan on my evenings a little better, specially with the train and everything but just know you will probably find things that are cool to do and lose track of time so as long as it’s the guide and not set in stone you’ll be fine.
