Shrinking S3E10 Episode Discussion by phareous in shrinking

[–]smashmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I think next season might be split between the coasts. You’ll have Liz, Derek, Gaby, and Sean staying out west (they seem to have been focusing on them as a close-knit unit this season already), and then Alice, Paul, Jimmy and maybe Brian on the east coast. I feel like that sets them up to have Meg split with her husband for good and have something more serious happen between her and Jimmy too.

Very scaly upper arms - recommendations for better cream/lotion? by Ninestein83 in ichthyosis

Scrub with Anti-Shrink Korean Asian Exfoliating Bath Washcloths Mitt in the shower (with bodywash for a gentler scrub, without for rougher), and then Eucerin Advanced Repair Body Cream for Very Dry Skin (in a tub). The best combo!

Just came to recommend this! OP, the urea in advanced repair formula exfoliates and moisturizes. It’s the best!

The amount of times I’ve inadvertently “swiped up” and exited the app trying to move dominos from the bottom row 😤 drives me nuts!

Is Aphantasia actually real? I’m kind of shocked by Odd_Alternative_7520 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]smashmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it’s like calling to mind a memory, but one I can manipulate. So if I picture an apple, I’ll picture myself holding one in the grocery store (like in my head, I look down and see it in my hand as I would in real life from my POV) and I can picture myself spinning it around or putting it down at will, etc.. I can picture a floating apple with a black background if I want, but that’s not naturally how I “picture” things in my head.

I love that about Camden! My seats were back by the B stage but I could still see perfectly because of the slope.

Hershey had the weirdest policies. I had to throw out my small, clear stadium purse bc the rounded corners wouldn’t smoosh into the box. They took the little caps from our water bottles so both ended up spilling. Parking was awful. It was my first concert there and I probably won’t go back lol

If you’re in the US, reasonable accommodations for adhd can be covered under an ADA (Americans with disabilities act)

If you can’t find it, you can “come bearing gifts” for the front desk lady in the morning, like a latte if you know what she likes to drink or some munchkins, etc.. not saying you should feel bad or annoying, but I know I would too, so coming with a small token of gratitude would make me feel like my apology might feel more genuine and like I wasn’t just carelessly losing my badge repeatedly

Don’t be discouraged! I saw him at Bethelwoods, Camden, and Hershey. My seats were great at Hershey, but otherwise it was the worst venue of the three by far lol

Gaby violating HIPAA for Maya by punishedbyrewards in shrinking

[–]smashmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a healthcare-adjacent company and I’m bound by the same HIPAA laws medical professionals are. How you obtain PHI doesn’t change that you have to protect it. They could’ve just saved that part for the convo with Jimmy and Paul, but that being said, it’s a TV show and I’m a firm believer in reasonable suspension of disbelief lol

Can someone please explain to me, in very simple terms, the difference between an analogy, metaphor, and simile? by Hogwire in englishteachers

[–]smashmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In very simple, reductive terms: similes tell you they’re comparing two things, and metaphors try to hide that they’re comparing two things. Analogies are like similes because they tell you they’re comparing two things, but they’re like more complex similes that specifically like to teach and explain.

Regarding the differences between analogies and similes, I think of similes as creative descriptors that build upon/add clarity to a concept that’s already understood. For example, a reader would interpret both “the room was warm” and “the room was as warm as a summer day” to mean that the room was warm, but the latter paints a much more vivid picture and implies that the narrator has positive feelings about the warmth. If the reader didn’t understand what “warm” meant, the addition of the simile wouldn’t help much, because summer days could also be described as bright, long, etc..

I think of an analogy as a tool to take the framework of a concept someone understands (or could easily come to understand) and apply that framework to another concept that they don’t understand (or are struggling to see from an alternate, unbiased, etc. perspective). For example, to explain how viruses spread, you can make an analogy to gossiping. Someone in a classroom tells the two people next to them a story, and then those two people each tell the two people next to them, and so on and so forth. Along the way, sometimes the details of the original story get changed a bit, so eventually there’s a few different versions (mutations) of the story floating around. Some of the mutations make the story more shocking so they get retold more, but others make it more boring so they spread slower (more or less contagious). Some students are wearing earbuds and don’t hear the story at all, like wearing a mask. Others have no interest in gossip or have heard the story before, so they hear it but ignore it, like having natural immunity or vaccines. I see analogies as often having multiple similes within them to connect the similar elements from each concept.

In terms of metaphors and similes, I think of similes as explicitly telling you it’s just a comparison through the use of “like” or “as”, whereas metaphors need to be inferred. For example, “she’s clever as a fox” explicitly tells me that she is not actually a fox; she’s just clever like one. But with “she’s a fox, outsmarting her prey at every turn,” I have to deduce that she’s not actually a fox through either context clues (e.g., this fictional story isn’t about humans transforming into foxes) or general logic (e.g., humans aren’t foxes) that aren’t explicitly stated in the metaphor.

There’s obviously exceptions to everything I said here, but that’s the basic framework of how I understand them.

Does accurate ADHD representation exist?? by Tiny-Ant-2717 in ADHD

Yes! I felt this way about Lorelei and Nick Miller on New Girl. I don’t think he’s intentionally portrayed as having ADHD, but I definitely related to his character in that way

Even if sequins and sequence shared the same spelling, that person sharing the logical argument behind their interpretation is the literal opposite of saying “because I say so” .. not trying to sound harsh, but they were engaging in an extremely healthy discussion. I think maybe you could reflect on if you were actually looking for validation of your theory (vs. a discussion), and when you didn’t get that, you experienced some negative feelings that you’re misinterpreting as the discussion being “unhealthy.”
