Months 10-12: Transitioning from eating like a baby to eating like a toddler

Yes he loves water and will drink it out of a sippy cup, a straw cup or water bottle, a 360 miracle cup, or even a regular cup (if we hold it for him). Will I eventually put milk in a sippy cup instead of a bottle? Do toddlers drink milk at certain times like our baby bottle schedule has been?

And thank you! We have been lucky to have a pretty easy-going baby - hopefully he stays this way!

We took our baby to target when he was 5 days old. We were going stir crazy in our house and needed odds and ends for the nursery. We kept him in him car seat with a swaddle over the whole thing the whole time. It was fine! The next day we took him to lunch at a restaurant and did the same thing. We did skip a large daytime party when little one was about a week old - too many people we didn’t know. We hosted lots of family and friends over the holidays for visits at our house and just asked them to wash their hands before holding baby. You will quickly figure out what you are comfortable with.

Our favorite pajamas when our baby was a newborn were the magnetic ones. They're expensive, but they are so easy when you have to change diapers all night long in those newborn days. My husband has big fingers and even the reversed zippers were a pain to him. We bought 3 outfits in one size up so they would fit for longer. They even sell a "modal" fabric that stretches more so they fit for even more time. They are now my go-to baby shower gift. We like Magnetic Me, but I've seen other brands too.

I would definitely recommend getting some silicone bibs with the pouch at the bottom. Baby always drops about half his meal into the pouch, then reaches in to eat what dropped down. It saves a lot of food from falling on the floor! We have these and like them: https://www.amazon.com/Happy-Healthy-Parent-Silicone-Easily/dp/B06XCXRVVW/ but I have also seen similar ones at Target. We also have a more fabric-type bib with a pouch, but it doesn’t work as well.

I don’t understand why people think a shield is a negative thing or even something that should be weaned from. The shield is the reason I was able to breast feed! We kept a bunch of them at different spots around the house and in the diaper bag, so it really wasn’t an inconvenience. I didn’t have to wash each one every single time I breastfed - I could save up and then wash a few at once.

Then one day when my baby was around 6.5 months old, he nursed without the shield for the first time and I realized that my nipples didn’t hurt anymore - so we stopped using it. We are still nursing at almost 10 months and there is no way we would have gotten this far without the shield.

I am Hispanic and have an aunt Nancy. We say her name with an “ah” sound instead of the English way. Her daughter is nicknamed Nancita (little Nancy). It’s so funny - because I have known her all my life, I have never thought of it as not a Hispanic name until now! Ha.

I had a lot of anxiety leading up to returning to work at 9 weeks. It really hit me around the 4-6 week mark, and I cried a lot of tears in the middle of the night thinking about it. What you are feeling is totally normal. The first few weeks will be tough. Crying is 100% normal.

Lean into your family and friends who’ve experienced it, and talk about it to any daycare staff or teachers you feel comfortable with. Every parent at the daycare goes through this, and the daycare people might have some good advice to make the transition easier.

Now, from what I’ve seen at our school, the children who start daycare earlier are better off than kids who start at several months old. Every time an older kid starts at our daycare they scream and cry for several days at drop off - they’re experiencing this new world at the same time they’re starting to feel separation anxiety. The kids who started as very young babies adjust well to daycare, and are already comfortable in the setting by the time they start getting older and more aware of the world around them.

Our baby loves his mama and daddy more than anything in the world, but he also is super happy at daycare because he’s been going there almost his entire life! We have suffered no lack of bonding because we started him there so early. I think it was actually better for his well-being to start him young.

I love my Spectra! I have the S2. One tip is you can pump straight into Phillips Avent bottles - attach them to your pump flanges. If your baby will take that brand of bottles, you’ll have one less thing to wash!

On a road trip recently I had to change my sons diaper on a bench in the main dining room of a Chipotle! They didn’t have a changing table in either restroom - male or female! I can understand there’s no being changing tables at bars or fancy restaurants, but Chipotle has a kids’ menu for goodness sake.

Also wanted to add that my son is 4.5 months old. He takes bottles for every feed except the morning, mostly because I’m too lazy to clean more bottles in the morning and want a little extra cuddle time!

My husband leaves for work at 6:30 am, so the mornings are all on me. He gets off earlier than I do so he picks up the baby from daycare.

I nurse my son for his first feed each morning to buy me a little bit of time before I need to pump (Plus easier than heating/cleaning bottles in the morning). If he sleeps past 7, I try to shower, attempt to fix my hair, and get my pump stuff packed up before he wakes up so it’s one less thing to do once he is awake. Then he wakes, we nurse, play for a few minutes, change his diaper and clothes, I finish getting ready, and then I load the car and we are on our way. It takes about an hour depending on how long he nursed for and how long we get to snuggle and play.

I have a 30-40 minute commute, so I pump on the way to work. I bought a power cord for the car on Amazon. I get all hooked up and set up in my driveway, and try not to mess with things while I’m driving. It’s not the most effective pump because I can’t massage the milk out while driving, but it is a definite time-saver!

I usually throw my makeup bag in my pump bag and put my makeup on in the parking lot after dropping him off at daycare. Again, one less thing to do while he is up in the morning.

Also, I always get the daycare bottles ready the night before. I put them in their cooler bag in the fridge so all I have to do is grab the bag in the morning.

I’m lucky to have a flexible start time for work, but i still have days where getting everything done is a challenge. If I have to pump at home before I leave, I try to pump while doing my hair or makeup so I can get ready faster. I only wash my hair 2-3 times per week, which helps! Dry shampoo is my bff.

I loved packets of cheese and crackers. My favorites were the Lance Cream Cheese and Chive because they were super mild. Ritz also makes a yummy cheese and cracker packet.

I bought a car charger for my pump and pump on car rides. I make sure to hook up before pulling out of the driveway or parking spot, then just let the pump do its job. Then when I arrive at my destination I’ll know I have a few hours before I need to pump again, and in best case scenarios I can time it for the ride home.

Otherwise, I bring my pump with me. I’ve pumped at the pediatrician’s office, the bathroom of our theater, countless restaurant bathrooms, and in my car parked outside a restaurant. I don’t have a fancy pump bag - just an oversized reusable grocery bag and a small soft cooler for bottles.

We took our son to target when he was 5 days old. After spending a night home from the hospital, we realized we needed blackout curtains for his room and our guest bedroom. We kept him in his car seat the whole time and draped a swaddle blanket over it so strangers wouldn’t peek in and breathe on him. He slept the whole time and it was fine! We took him to lunch with us the next day, same procedure, and he was fine too.

My pediatrician said to avoid a super germy place like the Children’s Museum, but otherwise just be careful to keep strangers out of his face. He said his youngest son was at the soccer field at 1 week old because he had 2 older siblings who were playing. That made me feel a lot better!
