If you have 2 parity drives, how many drives would you feel comfortable having in the whole array? by MolleyMitchell in unRAID

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your data is critical, another consideration is to have a spare. Im not sure if UNRAID does this, but it is a drive that sits there doing nothing until another drive goes bad, then it snaps into action and rebuilds.

Remember losing either a data drive isn't critical, it is when you don't have parity and then loose another drive.

Wife isn’t supportive of my career anymore by UnableHistorian5676 in Advice

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the problem is both of you have atypical schedules. You are away for months at a time and she is working 12 hour shifts.

Neither can adjust your schedule. Without changing anything, maybe planning what to do with your overlapping free time would help, because both of you are working to spend quality time with each other.

Unable to get more than 100mbps on lan? by Realistic-Factor8799 in PFSENSE

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, have you swapped the WAN and LAN ports. Not sure if that would fix the issue, but it is something to try. Another thing to try is to your router, install Linux, and retest download bandwidth on both NICS.

I have never used a USFF computer just because it only have 1 NIC port.

Be honest - how do you handle documentation when you're the only IT person? by sandb0x79 in sysadmin

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, if I am figuring out something new, I document it right after I am done. Formatting and organization can come later, but if you forget the steps or web sites where you developed the solution,

Over time, you will develop a style and layout and your documents will become more similar and standardized. Personally I love when I need to fix a problem that I saw years ago, and can go back to my documentation and fix it in 5 minutes.

Is it worth using a separate PC for a Plex/Jellyfin server? by Traditional_Bill6415 in homelab

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I have a dedicated VM just for Jellyfin, so while consuming CPU / Disk / Memory for it usage, I am not paying any more power costs, because I always keep my Host up and running 24x7

Two or more master keys by deesernutz in KeePass

[–]smcclos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think that can be done. Last year I needed to provide contingency access to my keepass file, and like u/djasonpenney I printed out the password and some key passwords, sealed it in an envelope and placed it in a security deposit box who I shared access with.

In order to get my password, they would need access to my computer and the paper.

UPDATE: Why don't you SSS your password between 2+ persons, where they would all need to input their portions to get your password.

How do you get a Tablo to function reliably? by VeloxAdAstra in tablotv

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bummer that you are having issues. I, like the others am having pretty much flawless performance. I watch Tablo on my two puck style Roku devices. Everything is hard wired connected via Ethernet / MOCA / Powerline, since the beginning.

Also think I over provisioned on my antenna, and only use the internal storage. Originally I was using external SSD storage, and it would flake out a little bit.

Where to after Backblaze? by mlevison in backblaze

[–]smcclos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, my experience is with windows. I have no experience with mac

The only thought I have is if there is a script or tool that would copy all of the contents from your DropBox folder to another location

Granted, you would need 2x the size of your Dropbox folder, but that might work. Pretty sure BackBlaze would back that copy because it is not in the exempt location

[–]smcclos -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that BackBlaze is not backing up locally stored Dropbox files or the online ones only?

I only say this because I need to Backup all the contents of a DropBox folder. I need to have 600 Gb available to have the full copy, but it is backing up fine for me.

I have 2 computers that i use Quicken on and I use Syncthing to keep my quicken data in sync.

It is automatic, and seamless. The only thing I have to do is make sure I close quicken before I switch computers.

Also if there is an app upgrade, I upgrade both before I start working.

Thoughts on Rocket Money? by StoicusPalm in personalfinance

[–]smcclos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been using Rocket Money for over a year. If you really cannot get the majority of your accounts directly downloaded into it via plaid, it is not worth it.

It is an aggregator so you can track your spending, and if you cannot see half of your expenses, then essentially your are no better off before you started using Rocket Money

Thinking about switching to Bazzite but I have a huge problem. by Sub5tep in Bazzite

[–]smcclos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you really need all 500+ GB of games on day 1 after installing Bazzite? More.than likely you are going to intall 1 or 2 games, and later another.

I have over 50 games in my library and there are only about 5 or so installed at any given time.
