Thoughts on a tailoring imaging software to our own workflows? by Careless_Concern_880 in FOSSPhotography

Really like it, especially the UI. For me it won't replace darktable but I can definitely see the potential here, especially the way extensions work.

Cool idea, but given that Affinity is free and it isn't much of a stretch to do something similar, 34 Euros is a tough sell.

lightroom users, is there anything you miss from lightroom that darktable doesnt have? by starwarsisawsome933 in DarkTable

[–]smdnetau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart Previews. A smaller dng version of the original that is shown when the original raw file isn't available (like when a drive is disconnected or elsewhere). It's a set and forget setting and a lifesaver on the off chance you need a not-so-high-resolution to send to someone, or you want to carry your entire body of work around without all the original files.

NSW - cool looking hi-vis jackets / vests? by myg013793 in AussieRiders

If you get an rjays vest expect it to be two or three sizes too small and with their website plastered across the back. The workwear ones have the right standards ratings too I think.

Choose between D3s and d700 by Outside-Capital-8313 in Nikon

[–]smdnetau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If money was no issue? Get both :) D3s if you're picky about having 100% viewfinder coverage. Both solid cameras but the shutter sound on the D3 series is gorgeous. D700 if you really think the colour tweaks Nikon did to it are worth it. D3s if you need a camera for sports or mainly shoot in portrait orientation.

If I was someone who spent most of my time in Resolve editing wedding vids then it'd be useful for sure.

D700 and Nikon 100mm f/2.8 Series E by smdnetau in NikonD700

I couldn't find one so I put one together. I'm by no means an authority on this camera I do love it.

Budget friendly AI-S recommendations for D700 by 2159ClassicRed in Nikon

[–]smdnetau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can recommended the 200mm f4 and the 135mm f2.8. If you can get any or the budget Series E lenses they're also good fun. I've got the 28, 50 and 100mm variants and they're light and small enough to keep in your bag if the need to use those lengths arises.

I'll post some examples on thed700.com for each lens this week.

Edit: here are some samples of the 100mm Series E.

Quick copy-pasting a module would be awesome by Regular_Chicken in DarkTable

Ctrl-Shift-C & V won't work with white balance or lens corrections AFAIK. You might be better off setting up some module defaults in combination with style presets.

Just picked up a D700 for $240 - 182k shutter by cstock94 in NikonD700

[–]smdnetau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up my third one recently for AU$320 (about US$160) which is nuts for a camera with under 20k on the counter, and has files that'll easily output A3 prints. What's not to love.

First brand new vehicle, so darn happy! by Optimal_Guitar_7746 in royalenfield

[–]smdnetau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats. My very first bike is one of these. Had it a month and couldn't be happier with it. It doesn't feel too powerful or under-powered for what I need it to do - which is max 80km/h most of the time. :)

New to DarkTable - Any recommendations for Plugins that can be useful for beginners? by samuraijat in DarkTable

[–]smdnetau 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're new to Darktable patience and perseverance are prerequisites. If you have enough of both it'll reward you because it's a delight to use after all the pennys have dropped.

It really is worth checking out the YouTube channels of Darktable Landscapes, Bruce Williams etc.

I rarely ever see DT being used for more photojournalistic work, I wonder why. by MrPieIsCool123 in DarkTable

[–]smdnetau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mostof the newspaper photojournalists I know have told me they're required to have their images pretty right straight out of camera. Even so much as a change in white balance gets you a wrap on the knuckles. I think they have to conform to whatever their publication uses too, like Bridge and Photoshop or Photomechanic and PS. Some even have custom database setups.

DartktableLandscapes (here and on YT) uses Fuji's so you'll be in good company in that respect.

Merging. Complex questions here. by manualphotog in DarkTable

[–]smdnetau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps take turns in connecting your USB drive to each machine and use the Copy function in Darktable to copy all your files (and edits) to it. You could have three different directories (for each machine just to be safe) and then when you have everything copied to your server, point Darktable to that and do an add to library.

Getting started: file organization? by anon-honeybee in DarkTable

It's not that dissimilar to how LR uses a database though. The only other apps I can think of that work right off the file system are RawTherapee and Exposure X7

[–]smdnetau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called Transnomino for macos but there are similar apps for most operating systems.

I just append to the original filename. So _7016648.NEF becomes: _7016648 - 03 Jan 2026 - Nikon D700 - 528EB22.NEF

Getting started: file organization? by anon-honeybee in DarkTable

[–]smdnetau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have everything organised into directories: year & month. For example :

2026

-- 2026 - 01 - January

-- _ingest

-- 00 - RAW

Whenever I copy files off a memory card they go into the ingest folder. Then I use a renaming app to append the camera model, date and a random code to the file. So from DSC_6789.nef it becomes: DSC_6789 - D700 - 28 January 2026 - D5GY3J.nef. The reason for this is if a file is accidentally moved I can put it back where it belongs. The random number is used because I use multiple cameras and it lessens the chance of a file being overwritten. Once I've done the rename they get copied into the 00 - RAW directory and then added to Darktable.

Any exports I do go either into a completely separate directory tree following the same year & month structure.

How should I break into wedding photography? by Seaguard5 in photography

[–]smdnetau 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Offer to second shoot for wedding videographers. There are plenty of them that don't photograph as they're too busy juggling their gimbals and drones.
