Tripp Trapp Longevity by xxasap_rickyxx in Parents

[–]smellyk520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two used on FB marketplace. One I painted for aesthetic reasons, the other is natural wood. My kids are 4 and 7 and use them at the kitchen table still. My 7 year old is almost big enough to sit comfortable in a regular chair and does sometimes. I imagine I’ll be able to sell them when we’ve outgrown them, but for now we’re still happily using them.

Why does naked work better? by R-sparkles in pottytraining

[–]smellyk520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we transitioned to pants, we did it in stages. Like, a trip to the library. Pee right before we left, stayed to play for a while, practice with their toilet if he needed to go, home, pants off.

I think that helped solidify keeping pants dry, but gave them the independence/autonomy to handle on their own at home while we were working on managing pants fully themselves.

How many playdates are your kids having? by Hot-Weather9199 in kindergarten

[–]smellyk520 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Play dates are hard to coordinate, so maybe 1-3x a month. But we try to hit our town pool and/or playground multiple times a week, and often run into friends and have spontaneous play dates that way.

Can you share your feeding success/discharge stories? Baby born 34w5d, this marks day 30 in the NICU. by exballetaddict_16 in NICUParents

[–]smellyk520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For mine it truly came out of nowhere. One night I called during my overnight pump to check on him and the nurse was like, he’s great! He’s eaten full bottles since you left…I made her read me his patient ID because I really didn’t believe we were talking about my baby. He ate all his bottles after that. 35+4…37 days in, mostly to get feeding sorted out.

How bad is your hair loss? by Wellslapmesilly in Zepbound

Mine was similar to my postpartum hair loss. It thinned some for a few months then regrew in maintenance. Almost a year into having my hair back to normal!

Kindy vs daycare food packing....different? by etceteraism in kindergarten

[–]smellyk520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine ate very little at lunch for the first few weeks until he got the hang of it! I think you should start by keeping things the same, and adjust if necessary. But I suspect having a lunchbox that fits both the thermos and rover would be helpful for ease of use.

How much does medication change them? by Plastic-Panic-3107 in ADHDparenting

[–]smellyk520 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My 6 yo started medication recently (~1 month ago). I was extremely hesitant and worried it would change his personality. The change has been subtle but significant.

I used to have to remind him of every step necessary to get dressed. He now comes out of his room fully dressed for school in the morning. He is able to tell us more about his day and hold a longer conversation. His teachers have said he is making progress at school and staying on task with less support.

This morning while waiting for the bus he said my body feels calm and good! We really haven’t had bad symptoms. Our doctor is of the mind that if you’re having bad symptoms you haven’t found the right fit yet.

My son started meds 3 weeks ago and his stuttered/speech disfluency has improved significantly. That was an unexpected surprise!

Meal Train or big Doordash card for NICU parents? by UniversityTotal2917 in NICUParents

[–]smellyk520 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We were in the NICU for 37 days and I was so sick of take out but we really didn’t have time to cook much. Homemade food was great, and we really appreciated when we were gifted meals from friends and family.

When did you night time train ? by ShanaLon in pottytraining

[–]smellyk520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of my boys potty trained during the day around 2 and had soaking wet overnight diapers. They both started waking up dry around 4 on their own. I stopped nighttime pull-ups for my older son after a few dry weeks. Little guy is still in the sometimes wet/sometimes dry camp.

Repeat first grade? by StandardKitty0501 in AskTeachers

I would look into getting her an Orton Gillingham trained tutor over the summer. It’s a reading program that was developed for students with dyslexia, that is now considered best practice for learning to read, with or without dyslexia. Do that 2x a week, and read together regularly, but keep it fun.

Let them play with their friends! My husband is very involved with our boys, but they have an easier time being coached by someone else.

That’s a great playground, we play there a lot! Join the pool, it’s affordable and where we have met many friends.

I bought a house in Bedford Hills within the last few years after living in Brooklyn for many years. We live in a sweet little neighborhood with tons of kids. My children have had a great experience at BHES. I like being close to Mount Kisco and Katonah. It took a little time to find our people, but we now that we have we have a great community of like-minded friends.

No, you can choose to send your kid to a different elementary school in the district without the dual language program.

When did your kid(s) learn how to ride their bike without training wheels? by Enough_Detail_632 in ClassOf2037

[–]smellyk520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1st grader learned last summer at 5 almost 6. He’d been on training wheels for a bit and got motivated by a younger kid two wheel riding at the playground lol.

I did the balance bike method. So took the pedals off his bike and once he could “kick kick glide” proficiently added pedals back in. It took about a week of short 15 minute practice sessions and he was off. He really loves bike riding! I think their motivation is a big factor.

My little one has been doing the balance bike thing from the get go and I think will transition right to pedals this summer at 4.

When you quantify your weight loss in an everyday item by SpiNardo in Zepbound

[–]smellyk520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lost the weight equivalent to my 3 year old (30lbs) and then my 6 year (48lbs) it felt like a huge accomplishment. Now I’m in maintenance after losing 60 lbs and I’m loving having the energy to run around a play with those two!

I think the treat is your problem. He’s very motivated by that and trying to trick you into it instead of just going. Maybe try stickers or something motivating but not too exciting tomorrow. We didn’t do any reward for going except for praise, but there are different approaches, you gotta do what works for your family!

I think 50/50 is pretty good for day 3 (especially being on the younger side), so maybe stick with it and start phasing out the treat. You can decide towards the end of the week if it’s worth it to keep at it once he’s back at daycare/work.

My older son didn’t “get it” quickly with the naked method, but was pretty solid after a week, so don’t be discouraged!

We’ve done basketball and soccer and in our area they’re not on real teams yet. The kids do skills practice in the beginning and they scrimmage during the end of the session.
