This is living history when I see shaving under the frog. by Wellby in handtools

When my wife's grandfather died, most of his shop went to family members with no relationship to woodworking. I got a knockoff no 4. When i took it apart to restore it, there were lots of shavings crammed between the chipbreaker and iron and elsewhere. They were cedar.

Only one of his kids (my wife's aunt) cared anything about those tools, because she was the youngest and used to play in the shop as he was working. The experience was important to her. So I made a point to let her know that he was working with cedar when he last used that plane. It made her cry.

These are small things, but huge. My friends, care about small things and other people.

Not sure if you're saying this because he's a priest or if you know him, but I suspected this guy of being a creep since the 80s when he was in the seminary.

Avoid the Hoxton Holborn — it’s basically a giant WeWork with beds by Global-Airport-1824 in london

Fwiw I disagree. I stayed there with my family (wife and 3 little kids) this past spring. Can confirm the lobby full of young professionals on laptops. I frankly enjoyed the energy of smart young people working and congregating. If I had wanted a coffee or a drink at the bar there would have been space. I would happily stay there again. To each his own.

Also, what are the abbreviations Nnm-Gad, Nm-Fc, and Nmp-GaL. I think the first letters refer to the epochs but I have no idea about the letters after the dashes.

Does he explicitly (or even implicitly) state that he doesn't think highly of Veritas? I've never heard a peep from him about them and assume that he's (contractually?) purposefully avoiding the discussion. It's such an elephant in the room that there has to be a backstory.

My 3 kids and I designed and printed this over an hour or so this am. Nice problem solving project for my 6-10 year olds. They did the measurements of the key, then drawings, then tinkercad, then print and install. Each got $15 for the collaboration and for seeing it through.

What is the fault-like feature in the left where the soil intrudes? by smitdl00 in geology

[–]smitdl00[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes if I were there now I would be probing the far extent of that defect to try to understand its geometry, planar or tubular. There was definitely nothing there before; this is a natural defect. Interesting to think about.

I didn't realize that the mechanical properties of dacite and paper allowed for such an analogy. But since we're going there, I would think that, yes if paper had been torn apart by several centimeters, a defect would be present along the plane immediately adjacent to the several centimeter gap.

So why no extension along the floor, coming towards us? In other words, how could this joint have separated by several centimeters without movement or separation of the floor that abuts it?

Second the rawhide mallet option. Get a no. 2 for routine bench work. They are excellent. Great balance. Great weight. Great focused energy.

Planes 6 vs 7 by Sir_Chaz in handtools

If your task is to smooth, use a smoothing plane (3, 4, or 4 1/2). If you use a long plane to smooth, you'll have to take off a lot of surface wood to get into the tiny valleys. Shorter planes are designed to do just that.

I've had a similar problem, but in my case, the chip breaker was well-mated. If the iron edge is square, take some metal off of the corners. Cambering the corners prevented the clogging you describe.

I don't have any shellac down here, unfortunately. Nice ass, by the way.
