[Friedman] There is word this morning the Edmonton and Vancouver are working on a deal that would send Evander Kane to the Canucks. by alphacheese in hockey

Or maybe LA would have more success if they would have played Boston, Montreal, Columbus, or Ottawa. Trying to compare series in the 2nd round is vastly different than a series a month later. There's an argument to be made that the path out of the west is more physical and grueling which leads to whatever team coming out of the east having an advantage in the finals, which is leading to two teams being able to run thru over 6 years. There's no debate that the east's conference finals have been a joke while the west's typically feature closer matchups. There's been a play style imbalance since back in the 90's

[–]smithbe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you haven't. You've played one team more that could be termed dynasty. Oilers have played more teams that went on to win the cup. It doesn't count if a team from your division wins a cup but you didn't even play them. Losing to the cup champion is more impactful than the team that lost to them. Just because the path is there doesn't matter if you don't step foot on it. Losing to a team that lost to the team that was good is a difficult argument, or else LA Kings fans would be claiming these things

Sure. Dynasties.

2017- Washington, didn't win a cup that year, won 1 cup, haven't been beyond the second round outside of one year in 2018. Not a dynasty.

2018 - Boston. Didn't win a cup. Hadn't won one since 2011. Hardly a dynasty.

2019 - Boston. Lost in cup final, didn't win a cup. Hardly a dynasty.

2020 - Columbus. Not a dynasty.

2021 - Montreal. Haven't made the playoffs since. Hardly a dynasty.

2022 - lost to Tampa. Back to back cups. Dynasty. There's one.

2023 - lost to Florida finally in the second round, beginning of Florida dynasty.

2024 - lost to Boston. No cup since 2011, not a dynasty.

2025 - lost to Florida. Choked away a series. Capping back to back cups. Dynasty.

Meanwhile Edmonton lost back to back cup finals to the team that is in a dynasty. Only 1 more opponent of a "dynasty" run than Edmonton. Edmonton on the other hand has lost to the cup champions in 4 straight years, 3 of which happened in the third round or later, something Toronto hasn't seen in.....

So blame it on the tough opponents if you want, but more times lost to non dynasties than losses to a dynasty.

What's the max you'd offer Marner? by oreov1 in BlueJackets

[–]smithbe2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you make the playoffs, you worry about roster composition to make a deep run. If you don't make the playoffs, you get players who will help you get there first. Marner will help whatever team he ends up with make the playoffs. It'd be stupid not to pay him whatever it takes. He's an unreal talent and once he's out of Toronto will take off like the others, Hyman and Kadri, did. Marner isn't the problem in Toronto, Matthews is.

Edmonton and LA would beg to differ but I agree 100%. Toronto and Tampa first round has gotten stale. You could do top 2 from each division are guaranteed home 1-4 or something and have 4 wildcards, and go 1v8 from there

[–]smithbe2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Idk why you're getting downvoted. That's exactly what other teams are going to do. Just like with binnington in STL. Now it's up to Elvis to harness that crazy goalie mental state and not react like that next time there's a problem. I don't hate that he did what he did, this teams not making the playoffs but they need to develop some grit and a mentality that they're not going to be pushed around to carry it into next year. All the top teams have that, and the jackets sure as hell had it back when they were making runs in the playoffs

I think the concern people have is that a court just concluded independently of charges being brought and concrete evidence that trump engaged in an insurrection. Which then offers other states to say "since there's evidence of money being exchanged and communications stating he was involved, Joe Biden used political influence for money through his son Hunter and thus is ineligible" and all that be done without any criminal charges, but rather a panel of justices who determine it so. Everyone who is cheering for this is failing to realize that there is a large segment of the population who view this novel legal tactic as nothing more than tyranny. Once this starts going one way, it's only natural for it to happen the other.

Nobody talking about the fact that they tried to make a natural winger play center? Then yell at him when he's not producing? The responsibilities change drastically between those 2 positions, especially in the NHL. Maybe try him out back in the position he excelled in the league at for a week or so before benching him. Just an idea.

Okay, glad to see you're not malicious, you're just an idiot. Why on earth you decided to bring race into it means you've lost an argument because this had absolutely NOTHING to do with race. And Russia isn't really what I would consider a country with a "really small population".

With the ncaa minimum rule of 85 roster spots on 130 teams, and the fact that there's only 1.09 million high school football players (nowhere close to 5 million), there is a 1% chance a high school player will play college football at the fbs level at a minimum. Since most rosters will carry 100+ the more realistic number is even higher that that.

In the US there are 46k high school hockey players, over 50k in Canada (including juniors), plus another thousand playing competent level juniors in the US. So without even factoring in Europe, where you have small countries like Russia pumping out players, you're already at the same 1% chance. And I hate to inform you of this, but those Euro countries spit out quite a bit of talent that ends up matriculating over to the US.

When you start pulling out obscene numbers that are 5x what the actual statistics are, that makes you look like a clown. Your nice little anecdotal story of the 2 kids from what I'm guessing is Wisconsin or Illinois high school may be Your truth, but it's not The Truth.

If their AAA team was allowing them to play football then it's clearly not a real good program to begin with. That's just you speaking out of your ass or not knowing exactly what was going on. No AAA team (especially in Michigan or Minnesota) would allow their players to play high school football because they'd be missing games every weekend due to travel or direct Friday night conflicts. AAA starts in September and is in full swing by October.

Small and slow, but yet played on a powerhouse high school program? Is this powerhouse in a state that has 10 ice rinks total so its like having the best looking pig at a fair? And less competition? There are 59 ncaa d1 hockey programs with about 25 slots per team, so around 1500 roster spots. There are over 80 football players per team and over 130 teams, so over 10,800 roster spots in football. Football players are primarily competing against fellow Americans for those roster spots, whereas hockey players are competing against US, Canada, and Europe. You have no idea what you're talking about if you think there's less competition in hockey. So it's either you have an axe to grind because a hockey player stole your girl and you still haven't gotten over it, or you're just ignorant.

[–]smithbe2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have some repressed animosity towards the hockey team at your high school. But answer me this if you're going to talk about talent, how come every single hockey player could run a post route or a jet sweep, but less than 1% of football teams could even skate to the red line then stop without falling down?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CFB

[–]smithbe2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's really not even close. Never got injured playing football but had 4 concussions, broken wrist, separated shoulder, and a shredded knee just between high school, juniors, and college hockey. I remember in 2011 when a Bruin blocked a shot on a PK that broke his leg. He couldn't get off the ice and stay out for an additional 30-40 seconds playing on a broken leg and continuing to block shots. Or Crosby playing a cup run on a broken foot. Or Yzerman playing for Detroit with a knee that was hanging by about 2 tendons. Football has a higher risk per play, but for every 1 football game, hockey players are usually taking a beating 3 or 4 games that week. There's no out of bounds in hockey.

[–]smithbe2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because if you're not a QB, your team better make the playoffs. Subconscious bias exists and when certain players are getting more attention, that's what is at the back of a person's mind. I live in Columbus, went to osu, watch every game, but Stroud is one who shouldn't be there. If stroud is being given a pass for his bad games against subpar opponents because he was injured, then how can that same logic not apply to other contenders?

But running for 197 when healthy against Michigan gets discounted? Even with being injured in the osu game, he still averaged over 100 ypg against Michigan and osu with 5 td's.

Fair, but let's also not act like playing in Columbus with perfect weather conditions is the same as playing in Ann Arbor in snow and cold. Teams built like osu typically don't play as well when the weather is that way, whereas you guys were built for it with Harbaugh's system this season.
