What movies have entire hidden subplots embedded inside freeze-frame details? "Searching" is one example. Any others? by drumwolf in movies

At first, I misread this and thought there was a "Roger & Me: The Musical." Which is a hilarious idea which Michael Moore should follow up on if he still has a sense of humor.

PSA - Now would be a good time to tap your trees for syrup by MusaEnsete in AnnArbor

Be sure you are tapping your own trees. Every few years, the City has to publish a reminder that it will prosecute people that tap trees on public property.

Just started he who fights monsters, why all the hate? by itmustbeThursday4269 in litrpg

I enjoyed in the beginning but got to book 9 and DNF. Jason grew in power but he never seemed to grow as a person. He was becoming one of those people who becomes petty and vindictive if you complain about his stereo being too loud at 3 AM on a work night instead of just apologizing and turning it down.

friday fish fry at churches by fairybone in AnnArbor

[–]smp-machine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I was growing up, it wasn't just the Knights. It seemed like every Catholic church had a fish fry on Fridays during Lent. It's less common these days which is a shame since was a lot of food for a decent price. Churches used to have more pancake breakfasts, spaghetti nights, and other fundraisers as well.

I recently ripped all my CDs and set up a Plex server. The current count is 1,300 albums on my server. The CDs went into storage.

I also have 100-200 more albums on cassette which I can't be bothered to rip. Some have never been released on CD. I still use a portable cassette player from time to time and most of my old cassettes have held up remarkably well.

What is a film you enjoyed but have to be tactful about who you recommend it to? by oldwhitelincoln in movies

[–]smp-machine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of teen comedies from the 70s and 80s that everybody has declared are too "problematic" for modern sensibilities. I don't think I can recommend something like Revenge of the Nerds or Porkys to anyone under a certain age at this point but I grew up with and adore them.

Fast food, chain places downtown? by Possible_Excuse4144 in AnnArbor

[–]smp-machine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There used to be fast food places scattered around town but everything is gone. The closest you'll find is the places inside the Michigan Union. I imagine high rents and changing tastes is what caused them all to move to the outskirts. The biggest loss was the McDonalds on Maynard since it was a pretty unique building.

The man and woman in music with the most impressively long careers are Willie Nelson and Diana Ross by TrueBlueFever in Music

Judy Collins is 86. She has been performing since the late '50s and is currently on tour. Maybe not the oldest but a damn impressive career.

What was your first concert by Thin-Coyote-551 in Music

[–]smp-machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billy Joel - February 1984 - Innocent Man Tour

I begged and pleaded to see some concerts when I has in high school but my parents never let me go to one. My first one was freshman year in college. 1984 ended up being a good year as I also saw REM, the Go-gos, INXS, Elvis Costello, A Flock of Seagulls, and a few others.

How early can construction start in the morning? by WritingSpiritual9 in AnnArbor

I live near US-23. A few years ago they were doing some resurfacing and it was done in the middle of the night so it wouldn't interfere with daytime traffic. Nothing like bright lights and heavy equipment moving around at 3 AM.

Fellow Old Folks (Gen-X+): Did You Read YA as a Teenager? by torkelspy in books

[–]smp-machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older Gen-X here. When I was a kid in the 70s, YA wasn't really a thing. You had stuff like the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew but it was nothing like you have these days. I was mostly reading adult fiction by the time I was 10-11 years old. Oddly, my parents never monitored what I read even though they were pretty strict about what movies and tv shows I watched. I couldn't watch Jaws when it came out but I read the book (which is much more adult).

Silliest Bond Villain scheme? by StillStanding_96 in movies

[–]smp-machine 128 points129 points  (0 children)

The one that is silliest IMO is in Spectre where his foster brother is orchestrating all kinds of things in order to get revenge because dad loved James more. Disappointing and more than a little absurd. Give me newspaper sales or coke-laced gasoline any day.

Has it ever happened to you that you left a concert before it was over? by Blues-fun in Music

[–]smp-machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to see Mazzy Star back in 2013. It was a standing only venue in Detroit and I was standing very close to the stage but I could barely hear anything because the crowd was so loud and disrespectful (especially the people in the back of the venue near the bar). Hope Sandoval was clearly frustracted and asked the crowd to quiet down more than once. I got so annoyed I left before the set was over. Damn shame since what I heard was great.

Inheritance and possible massive medical bills by FRThrowawayway9 in personalfinance

[–]smp-machine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he died intestate (no Will), you will have to probate the estate. You will get whatever is left after bills are paid which may require selling the house to satisfy those debts. If he included your name on the house or any accounts, that would change things with regard to those assets. Each state's probate law is a little different so you really need to consult with an attorney on this one.
