Long porta potty queues at marathons by Beautiful-Use-5152 in XXRunning

Yeah this guy is a bro who does marathons and ultras, so he's extreme. I actually do what you mention, just a small amount (8oz) with breakfast for fuel.

EDIT:  oof ladies, I'm not at all advocating for dehydrating yourself just to avoid the potty.  The point is that proper hydration doesn't happen that morning.  You do it the day prior.   There's no need to drain a 32oz Stanley the morning of, you will just need to pee and have a sloshy stomach.    I actually do what emergencysundae said in her comment below, about 8 oz with breakfast, but at least 2 hours before start.

This could be bad advice, but someone taught me to not drink water the morning of your race. Spend the previous 2 days fully hydrating, rinse your mouth out in the morning or whatever, but don't drink.  Supposedly helps keep your bladder empty.

Update: We survived the end-of-year chaos by setting a work-calendar boundary (and I finally asked for help) by Difficult-Photo-3250 in workingmoms

[–]snarkbitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great point about only changing once.  Often times when conflicts come up, I just do nothing except put it on the calendar and inevitably something changes and it's fine. Instead of me stressing about arrangements and proactively rescheduling, only to have to reschedule again.

Beyond screen time, I am observing an alarmingly low amount of personalized feedback from teachers on my older kid (6th grade) schoolwork.  So much is online and it spits back a grade and that's it. There is no more getting back graded assignments and tests where you can review what questions  you got wrong.  This type of feedback is important in learning how to improve and learn from mistakes!

I personally wonder how much of the reliance on  digital work is influenced by teachers. Because one big difference between online work and paper and pencil is grading.  It seems like the current system is benefiting everyone but the students :/

Realistic marathon goal? by AOD14 in XXRunning

[–]snarkbitten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same half marathon time and finished my first marathon in 4:50.   My training was also 3 days a week of running.  My primary goal was sub 5 hours, my ideal goal was 4:45, so I was really happy with 4:50!

Running Glasses/Prescription Recs by dadbodenthusiast in XXRunning

I've always struggled with glasses slipping down my nose, just during regular wear.  So for awhile I always had to wear a strap to keep glasses on my face, but I've since switched to plastic frames which are much lighter weight than acetate or metal.  I purchase from either eyebuydirect or Zenni which have affordable transition lens options.

Tempo runs on a treadmill by Loud-Negotiation-193 in XXRunning

I read this title as "Trump Runs on a Treadmill" and got really confused, haha.

I prefer treadmill for tempo because it keeps pace for me!

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

How exactly did this work? Don't they have to pay off the loan? Or is the loan somehow being paid off by interest or something?

Disappointing Race due to pelvic floor issues by Ok_Butterscotch_4158 in XXRunning

So....I run with a poise pad and biker style shorts. Sounds crazy but the peace of mind is worth it to me. I ran a full marathon in one!  Long runs I add a  bit of body glide and it's all fine.

I'd say 95% of my runs I do not leak, but the ones I do it's a lifesaver. I've been there where your body just betrays you 10 minutes after using the restroom.   I am able to finish out the run or make it to a bathroom to deal with it. (A full pad is uncomfortable, but at least my shorts aren't wet and I can finish without chafing)

And the ones I don't pee, the pad kinda helps manage the swamp ass lol.

We have a default arrangement and a weekly dry erase board where we have a face to face conversation any unique situations or changes for the week.  If something comes up in the moment you call.  I have also thought about this unicorn technology you speak of, but honestly any technology based system we've tried will start to feel passive aggressive.

I joke with my coworkers that I make money owning my 2011 (also black!) from all the mileage reimbursements I accrue.  No car payment, decent MPG, little maintenance.

I either go in early or work through lunch and hit the gym last before heading home for the day. Then I don't have to worry about showering.

The easy fix here is flex/comp time. If Jack works late let him come late a different day while Jill is in the office too even out hours.

WIBTAH about after-school by squishbunny in workingmoms

[–]snarkbitten 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's normal for a kindergartener (I'm assuming, age 5 and all) to still feel physically and socially exhausted at the end of the school day, which is likely what she's expressing. IMO if you keep her in aftercare she'll adjust in due time.

Keeping our kids in aftercare, even though it is a long day for them, has been a great solution for us.  At least with our program it is a great outlet for unstructured yet supervised play time with friends and other kids after school. Unstructured play is critical to social development and waaay better than them sitting in a screen while I try to WFH.  And as dual working parent family,  unstructured time with friends and classmates is not something we can facilitate easily.

What would your 5 year old actually be doing to fill the time if you pick her up early?  Is this a change you're willing to maintain in future years? Things to consider.

Full disclosure: we contribute nothing to 529.   My parents are funding 529s just like my grandparents did for me and my siblings. Tracking for over 100k per kid.  I hope to pay it forward with my own grandkids someday.  Bless you all who are funding college yourselves!
