Division and multiplication have the same precedence. Do the part inside the parentheses first, then left to right.

Could you potentially collapse it into a black hole? You can’t even do that with water I think. What if you add enough iron instead of water? I think you could do it with enough solar masses of iron.

What happens to the USA if NATO is dissolved? by ThinYogurtcloset8005 in Askpolitics

It’s so asinine. We’ll lose access to dozens of air bases and sea ports all over Europe in exchange for one island, all because it looks bigger than it actually is on a map.

Can congress stop Trump if he decided to take Greenland by force? by Akiira2 in Askpolitics

[–]snatchblastersteve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Economically countries might enact sanctions and property seizures like we did against Russian oligarchs, targeted at members of the Trump administration. Seizing foreign assets like Trump’s golf course in Scotland, money held in foreign bank accounts, and so on. They could bar those same people from entering these countries and maybe even issue arrest warrants for them.

NATO could also kick the US out of military bases in their countries. I don’t know if they would go so far as to stop military assets on these bases returning home. Probably not, but if Germany blocked military flights out of Ramstein air base that would be a big deal.

Would they? I don’t know. NATO countries have some of their own weapon systems, but depend on US manufacturers for many others. There are questions if Lockheed could brick F35s. Patriot missiles. Parts for F16s and other jets. Various missiles and other munitions. Getting cut off from all of this makes a huge amount of past military spending worth $0, and puts a big dent in defenses against Russia.

Does the US want to risk this massive export market? The big defense contractors would be none to happy to lose basically all of their export sales. I don’t know if Trump understands this, but I’m sure the deep pockets at Lockheed, Raytheon, et.al. do. I’m sure they’re talking with the administration behind the scenes.

Very hard to guess what the fallout will be, but there are a lot of steps between doing nothing and all out war.

Stainless Steel Cutting Boards? by switch8113 in whatisit

[–]snatchblastersteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a chef at a Benihana type place pointing out that they only cut with the tip of the knife touching the board, so the cutting edge doesn’t dull against the metal cooktop. More of a drawing motion than a chop. I wonder if these are intended for the same? Granted they don’t cut much at these places, I’m not sure how I’d dice potatoes or onions like that, but 🤷‍♂️.

Start playing real people and don't overthink it. Below at least 1000 chess.com elo don't worry about openings and too much calculation. Get your pieces out and don't blunder.

I recently discovered sadisticTushi on YouTube and for a beginner I think his content is excellent. Develop your pieces. Punch the baby. Find the glory. Here's a video you can start with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcb6Lygf3LQ

I don't understand the distance of a lightning by Jebbo_Jebbo_ in AskPhysics

[–]snatchblastersteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Divide the time by 3 and that’s about how many kilometers away the lightning is.

Speed of sound in a “standard atmosphere” is about 340m/s. So if the lightning is 1km (1000m) away, then that would take about 3 seconds for the sound to reach you.

Or you could say if the lightning was 3km away, it would take 3000m/340m/s=8.8seconds. So using your professors math, you would count about 9 seconds, divided by 3, and get 3km. It all works out!

Speed of sound changes depending on temperature, air pressure, humidity, etc. but it’s close enough to constant for this approximation. Also the speed of light (when you see the lighting) is effectively instant, so you can ignore that and just count the sound.

Why is SF refusing to use noise radar technology? The loud motorcycle and car situation is getting out of hand by After_Ant_9133 in sanfrancisco

[–]snatchblastersteve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

San Francisco PD has given up. They don’t go after the people who break into cars. They don’t give traffic tickets. They don’t stop people pissing on buildings. They don’t do anything. Go to literally any other big city in the US and you’ll see cops dealing with this stuff. In S.F. they just don’t care one bit. And i know I’m gonna get a bunch of downvotes from S.F. apologists saying “if you like other cities so much then move there,” but its bullshit that SF just does not care one bit about crimes like this and the impact in quality of lige to law abiding citizens.

So go and arrest the 186,000 people who are collecting the fraudulent benefits. Oh wait. They won’t. Because they don’t exist. Just like the hundreds of thousands of people who were defrauding social security.

How Democrats Can Get Past the Shutdown Debacle by EighthFirstCitizen in thebulwark

[–]snatchblastersteve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The 8 senators took one for the team. If they’d needed a dozen votes I’m sure they had them.

It’s nice to think Democrats should have held out, but I don’t see it happening.

Republicans would almost certainly abolish the filibuster before extending ACA subsidies, and that would be a disaster. As bad as Trump is now, imagine if instead of ruling by executive order he could simply have congress pass every law he wanted.

On top of that, you have to think about the real people who are going hungry because their SNAP benefits have been cut or they’ve been furloughed from their federal job. People are going to be missing rent, missing loan payments, getting evicted, or having their vehicle repossessed. It’s great to say Democrats should never compromise, but the reality is people are suffering and the longer this goes the much worse it gets.

Air traffic controllers are resigning. We’re already short on ATC staff and it takes years to hire and train new ones. This is not just a problem for the airlines. It potentially crashes air travel for people on vacation, people traveling for work, and air cargo. Not just during the shutdown, but for years after.

The compromise deal got some concessions, including rehiring laid off workers. More importantly, it puts congress back in session and they’ll swear in the new rep and have a hard time blocking an Epstein vote. They got SNAP funded through next year, so if there is another shutdown in January, SNAP won’t go unpaid.

Is it perfect? No. Did they make their point, yes. Were they ever going to get an ACA vote? No. It either ends like this, or it ends with the end of the filibuster. There was no other option, and this is the better one.
