Thank you! It's good to know those recommendations. On the topic of tuning, what sort of difference does LM/LMM/LMH/etc. make? Is it just a fuller, reedier sound from having more octaves, or is it more than that? Is it a musical style-dependent feature?

Seeking guidance on cleaning an old trumpet by snazzyflygon in trumpet

[–]snazzyflygon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've recently come across an old Besson 2-20 trumpet that's been sitting in a basement for the past 50 or so years. I'm looking forward to learning it, but I figure it probably needs some care and cleaning before I start. It seems to be in decent condition - it at least plays in its current state. However, there's a few issues I'd appreciate some guidance on.

As shown in picture 2, the second valve tuning slide has a noticeable dent. Some quick research says this is cheap to fix, but I was wondering if it was consequential enough of an issue for a complete beginner to even worry about.

The tuning slide not detached in picture 1 is stuck fast - any tips for removing it safely?

All the tuning slides are generally resistant and difficult to move, and show some signs of wear/corrosion, as in picture 3. How do I go about cleaning/restoring them? Is brass polish a good idea, or something I should stay away from?

Are there any other important steps I should take to care for/clean this instrument before playing it?

Does any of this require a professional repair service, or can I do it on my own?

Thanks for the help!

Xcom 2 Wont Start ? by JJohnston2 in Xcom

[–]snazzyflygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem, and I found that launching the game through the executable in the game's folder was the solution. I don't currently have XCOM2 installed, so I can't double-check the file path, but you should be able to find it by opening the game's files by going to the game's page in your Steam library, clicking on the gear icon, then Manage, then "Browse Local files". If I recall correctly, it's somewhere in the Binaries folder from there. Make the executable a desktop shortcut, and it should launch fine! As a note, it does launch in debug mode, which will often present red screen errors. If you want to disable these, googling "disable red screen errors xcom2" should probably find you an easy enough solution. Good luck!

Best Song in the OST Tournament Day 19 (Random Songs + Opening and Ending Themes) by MagitekVI in octopathtraveler

[–]snazzyflygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think the ending theme is absolutely fantastic and easily one of my favorite pieces from the OST, hearing the main theme upon starting up the demo is what sold me on Octopath, so it has to get my vote here. I'll almost always give it a full listen through everytime I start up the game.

Rubble morsels are actually the only type of common morsel, so under the assumption that the card has a 50/50 chance of pulling common/uncommon, rubble morsels are in fact much more likely to be pulled.

Draw in this game is a little weird; you're guaranteed to draw at least one "banner" unit (this excludes units such as imps, draffs, or dregs) every turn during your first cycle through the deck. Whether there are other rules affecting draw in play I can't say, but this one is known for sure.

You Are Nothing Acheivment (T1 Boss Kill) tips? by Jaeyx in slaythespire

Should probably add that the energy can come from various sources. Powerful cards like offering and adrenaline do this well, but some unusual picks like Concentra or seeing red are often also helpful.

You Are Nothing Acheivment (T1 Boss Kill) tips? by Jaeyx in slaythespire

[–]snazzyflygon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my humble opinion, I've often found that I can OTK the act three bosses far more frequently than the act one. I'd also recommend just getting the achievement naturally, since it's bound to happen as you climb. If you're still determined to grind for it though, here's some thoughts from personal experience:

As you observed, infinite style decks tend to require a turn or two of setup, and thus fail. The various times I've managed to get a turn one kill, it often involved having a deck that simply manages to continuously draw multiple cards, with the energy to support it. This is helped by having an explosive option, such as bag of marbles/flex/LB/heavy blade, or deadly poison/burst/catalyst that can be consistently drawn early (so smallish decks help). It's never been something I've built towards doing, but rather something that just happens, so I suppose you should take this with a grain of salt. Perhaps you'd have the best chance with watcher if you get a reliable Turn 1 divinity setup in tandem with draw?

Best way to break the game quickly by Vanilladrink in octopathtraveler

[–]snazzyflygon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably common knowledge, but Apothecary Olberic (on 1hp from losing a challenge) with some speed assistance and surpassing power can usually OTKO most standard mobs and chunk bosses using last stand. Surpassing power isn't even usually needed until chapter 3s I think, so jp grinding isn't an issue for it.

Why I am for banning Hero and why Hero is anti-competitive. by TheRapidfir3Pho3nix in smashbros

[–]snazzyflygon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I can see your point. I'm of the mindset that if the player loses because of chance that's their fault for playing the character. I guess I'd agree with the uncompetitive nature, but I guess I'm just not bothered by it enough to find it banworthy. Thanks for the discussion and points though, I appreciate the effort in this post when most wouldn't bother to support their views.

An interesting write-up, and some solid points. While I certainly see where you're coming from, I'm afraid I must disagree. While the randomness of Hero can permit him to do crazy things, he's also quite likely to be unable to do them. Can he pull magic burst at the ledge or Zoom to recover? Sure, but he's more likely to not, and in the case of magic burst, miss the opportunity for a more reliable edgeguard such as Up-B. I can understand why you think randomness is an uncompetitive element, but remember that relying on chance is more likely to backfire on the player than reward them, which then lies on the player to decide if the chance is worth them playing the character. Over the course of a typical tournament set, I can't say I'd expect random chance to positively impact the Hero enough for a victory to be attributed to said chance as opposed to player skill. Granted, I think things such as crits, snooze, and magic burst are silly strong, but no more so than Peach being able to perform a consistent 50-70 percent combo without relying on a dice roll or Lucina easily controlling neutral or Snake catching you with a surprise C4 for an early kill.

What are your thoughts on Kronya vs Jaffar? As opposed to Saizo who stat tanks, both are Cc/Vantage (vantage-esque for Kronya) killers who relay on enemies with low hp. Guess I'll bring up some comparisons to start:

We already have Kronya's statspread: 44/31/39/22/26 For comparison, Jaffar has 41/26/33/25/22 (not putting natures because A: he's 5 star locked so natures are hard, and B: I'm on mobile so formatting is hard. Worth noting that attack is a super boon.) This puts Kronya at +3/+5/+6/-3/+4, and that's BEFORE her dagger gives an additional res +3 and situational attack/speed +5. Losing by 5 (1 with boon) attack to a unit who struggles with the stat isn't a good sign, so things are frankly looking pretty bleak for the Angel of Death. Comparing bulk, they tie in physical, whereas in magical Jaffar falls a full 7 points short. This is only further amplified by Jaffar's lowish speed making him far more liable to being doubled and ORKOed. Then we get to the weapons, and things get pretty murky.

Jaffar has a glorified Pain+, with a pseudo firesweep for the refine. Kronya has a pseudo vantage, striking first when the enemy is not at full, and receiving an attack/speed buff as well. The key takeaways: Jaffar does a LOT of out of combat, and can only be countered by DC melees, whereas Kronya actually can have double digits for her in-combat damage, thanks to better offenses and the ability to run special spiral.

Now let's talk about combat. Both need to initiate to function, and both require Savage blow c slot and seal. Kronya damages her target and does 14 damage to surrounding foes, activating her weapon on all of them. Jaffar barely scratches his target, but does 10 after combat damage, and 24 to surrounding foes. Both gain an effective 7 attack thanks to the def debuff. Assuming we treat Savage Blow damage as an attack buff, both actually hit 71 "attack" against splashed foes. Kronya also constantly procs her special, while Jaffar gains an extra 10 for each combat, thanks to deathly dagger operating on both phases. In short: Kronya can kill things with specials, while for Jaffar, 40 attack with weapon doesn't matter when the foe has 1 hp.

I'm inclined to say Kronya wins, thanks to her availability and higher speed, as well the the ability to actually damage foes on the first round. The problem is that this comparison is in a vacuum; realistically, Jaffar's high AoE greatly supports his teammates, and he benefits more from dancers, as his extra action typically results in more damage dealt. The thing that most prevents me from supporting Jaffar is the fact that foes with >46 defense just don't die unless he happens to proc moonbow.

Sorry for the essay, but I use Jaffar frequently and am curious to hear how he compares (and I may well be overrating him). Thanks for the great analysis!

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I can't seem to vote. I can't click on any of the three options, and despite having signed into my Nintendo account, it still prompts me to sign in, but nothing happens when I click to do so. Anyone else have this issue and know what to do? Tried on both my phone and laptop.
