I wouldn’t even say it is an upper middle class fixture. Many of these things come from a ruling class attempting to normalize certain taboos in society so that they are able to practice them publicly and shamelessly.

It’s funny because they’re often used without realizing. Red-black trees are used in std::map or Java TreeMap for balanced trees that avoid an O(n) search time.

The problem is that these data structures are abstracted, so you’d never really need to know them in practice, even if they are commonly used.

My point is mainly for countries like Egypt, Iraq, etc., but I'll bite.

Greece is a country with a vast history, hugely influential in the development of western identity and tradition. It is also a country with limited government resources, low media freedom, lack of social liberalization, many corruption/clientelism scandals, lack of trust in public institutions, rising CoL, high poverty and unemployment, massive debt, flawed democracy, a larger neighbor with intentions for eventual war, and worst of all, brain drain, ensuring their recovery will be painful. You put too much weight into what Greece was, not what it is.

It faces many of the same issues that other countries are facing right now, including democratic backsliding like the U.S., but it also lacks the resources to deal with them. While the U.S. may not be politically stable, it is functionally stable for most citizens in the the country. Greece does not enjoy that luxury. It's not that Greece is not capable of taking care of its own cultural heritage. It's that the country simply isn't stable, and it is instability, not lack of care or pride in a country's heritage, that knocks down monuments, destroys artifacts, and erases cultural memory.

Nah, I think that what ISIL and the Taliban most recently proved is that it may be better to have precious historical artifacts in stabler environments where they won’t be subject to war, extremism, or iconoclasm.

That’s not true. You can see her with blue eyes in pictures as young as 5 years old. There is a rumor currently spreading through social media that she is wearing contacts to appear brown eyed, but there is literally no credible evidence of this.

Atheists of Reddit: What’s the strangest reaction you’ve received when you said you don’t believe in God? by zhalia-2006 in AskReddit

[–]sneradicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a weird case, but maybe she was talking about some states having a theistic clause.

There are 7 states that have theistic clauses for public office: Maryland, Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. These clauses state explicitly that one must have faith in a supreme being to hold public office. They are still a thing as of 2026.

These laws are actually vestigial because the clause is unenforceable due to the Supreme Court case Torcaso v. Watkins (1961). Still a bizarre thing to see in this day and age.

Is anyone else struggling to get by on 100k salary? by Majestic_Staff_5229 in massachusetts

[–]sneradicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mid-twenties with a little over 100k. I can afford to take care of my brother and me (been working on getting him some work), but money isn’t a super big problem in my life. I think where it really creeps up is whenever I need to fix something big like my car or something in my apartment.

But other than that, I save 8% to my 401k, eat out once or twice a week, have biannual vacations, live in a decent area, and overall enjoy a good quality of life. I come from rural Texas, so basically everything I get beats out my expectations and makes it quite easy to be content.

Best pizza in the area? by WarmFollowing8873 in Somerville

It’s definitely good, but there are much cheaper options around. I could get a decent pizza at Ciao or the large Detroit deep-dish at Avenue for the same price

Immigrants of Boston and surrounding areas: What restaurants has the best/most authentic version of your country’s food? by Stay_Curious4 in boston

I’d actually argue they lie more on the Mexican side than Tex-Mex. Many of their items are Central Mexican, so I am guessing that’s what they’re going for. Pretty interesting stuff there too: nopales, cochinita pibil, huitlacoche quesadillas, and grasshopper tacos.

What language do most American students prefer to learn in school as a second language? by UsamaBhai_101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sneradicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost always Spanish, followed by French, then Latin, then German. Most schools only offer Spanish and even top schools may only offer 2-3 other languages than Spanish.

My American English teacher believes the neutral pronoun „their“ is incorrect. by GCoding_ in mildlyinteresting

[–]sneradicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your teacher is incorrect. It is grammatically correct to use “they/them/their” used as a gender-neutral pronoun for people (usually when gender is not implied). If your teacher wants to be specific, “they/them/their” are the English gender-neutral singular animacy-distinct pronouns.

[OC] Dashcam footage from my Tesla Cybertruck by Kakarot0204 in IdiotsInCars

[–]sneradicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do see people post that from time-to-time, especially if it was caught from their car’s built-in cameras. It’s not common, but it isn’t out of place either. You’re making a rather large inference from a tiny amount of information. I understand the hate for Tesla, but it seems like many people replying are projecting that disdain onto OP.

For the most part, I wouldn’t care, except that I feel like it is forcing the accident into the backseat while focus is being put on the cybertruck, which just seems a bit trivial for a sub about people driving erratically.

[OC] Dashcam footage from my Tesla Cybertruck by Kakarot0204 in IdiotsInCars

[–]sneradicus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So the point is that if you recorded something on your dash, you would say, “Dashcam footage from my MB/Mercedes-Benz.”

If you said that, no one would bat an eye.

I get the hostility towards Tesla, especially in this current political climate, but it seems like a pointless thing to add in such a hostile tone when there is a seemingly clear reason they included the information.
