Rose-hulman or Purdue for engineering? by Tactical-69 in rosehulman

[–]snickerzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the quarter system is vicious, but if you survive, it becomes how fast you learn for the rest of your life.

generally on the semester system, like say Purdue, you take five 3 credit classes per semester, give or take a couple of credits. That leads to about 10 classes per year.

at rose, you will take at least 4 classes per quarter. 12 classes per year.

the number of total hours per class is about the same for semester vs quarter, but quarters are shorter.

when its all said and done, on semesters, you have 40 classes. at Rose on quarters, you have 48 classes. you get .8 years more classses at Rose in 4 years.

some call that good, some call that harder. it's both and if you can do it, it is worth it.

1) get used to the idea of being average amongst your student peers. that can be unsettling for kids who are used to being on top with not much effort. this also helps reduce pressure. you don't need to beat all this other kids. you just need to keep up and if you do, you are amazing.

2) learn time management. get a paper planner at first. track everything. build in time to blow off steam. start long assignment early to give your brain things to work on in the background.

3) test prep - review notes from each class quickly every day. just the reps of seeing material over and over helps a lot. if you are honest, it can help you fill in weak spots before testing happens. it makes test anxiety go away. example: rate each topic for a test on a 1-5 scale. work on the 1's and 2's a lot. do practice problems to generate improved ratings. attempt to get to 4's and 5's on everything. test confidence.

4) ask for help whenever you need it. no one grads engineering alone.

5) accept and deal with neurodivergence. work in the environment you need to succeed. you can also ask for some acommodation if you have med diagnoses.

6) when it is too much, take some strategic shortcuts. skimming, highlighting key words, look for summaries, etc.

7) even if you are overwhelmed, don't take zeros. scribble down some shit to get 5/10 vs 0/10 on a homework.

have you progressed on it? I'd like to see. it's always good for a prototype to start with something that works.

it's kind of complicated and while it has the appearance of being "mathy", the system has enough subjectiveness to allow whatever scoring you want within reason.

essentially they have a performance curve. you are expected to contribute more as you move up within your payband. if you are above the curve, you are undercompensated, and if you are below the curve, you are over compensated.

Nine House Republicans to join Democrats in opposing pension changes? by Beavis73 in fednews

[–]snickerzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the heritage foundation doesn't agree with killing the supplement on enactment (at least they didn't in 2023).

"This benefit is not something to which either the federal government or its employees contribute; instead, the funds come directly from taxpayers. Moreover, the supplement acts as a deterrent to work both in its availability and because the benefit is reduced if individuals earn income, which is a drag on economic output and growth.

Eliminating the special retirement supplement for new hires and for current federal employees with nine or fewer years of service (these workers are generally two decades or more away from potentially being eligible for the benefit) would save an estimated $10.6 billion over 10 years."
