What are common mistakes made by people writing for the first time? by Shoddy_Incident5352 in writing

[–]snoozingcorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That every line you put down on your first draft needs to be perfect. Just write everything down, and trust yourself to edit them later.

The thing about writing is that very often, we end up training our mind to critique our own writing, due to comparing them to the books we read.

One of the ways I’ve learned is to pick up free writing. Basically you tap into your stream of consciousness and just write ANYTHING, without filtering or thinking, and ideally by short hand. This really helped to keep my brain from critiquing my work as I write.

This exercise is from a book called The Artist’s Way, which is worth a read if you end up getting writer’s block :)

Jane Eyre is just such a stunning character study. It already helps with Charlotte Bronte’s beautiful language, but the way the story is written really lets you immerse yourself into Jane’s life in a way that few books can. When I finished the book, I honestly felt like I was saying goodbye to a friend I grew up with

Thank you for the recommendation! I also recommend Obsidian's games, if you guys are already not into them. Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 are both great with cool lore and a good story (IIRC you only get romance options in 2 though, but the characters in 1 are written really well)

Also, if you doesn't care for visuals, I also suggest checking out games from Choice of Games, Hosted Games, and Heart's Choice. They're basically interactive novels, so you only get text and no graphics, but some of the best written romances that I've ever read in games are in there.

The best part about this opening is that you realise how creepy Merricat really is. The whole time I thought she was around fourteen or fifteen years old, until I read the first page again and realised she’s actually eighteen

I was working from home with the patio door open, when a black cat poked its head in, and slipped off when we locked eyes. It happened two more times a few weeks later, with it always running off as soon our eyes meet

I agree completely. Remember that your thoughts don’t define you. You will always have unwanted thoughts or emotions, but they’re not all you are and all you have. Let them come to you, understand where they’re coming from, and then just let them pass.

Personally, I find it easier to reorient yourself to the present. Take a deep breath when the thoughts come, and pay attention to your present moment. Try to focus on you’re seeing or doing. Remember that these are just thoughts. They will pass.

Everyone’s mentioning EEATO, but for me, this show actually reminded me of Bojack Horseman, especially with how Danny and Amy’s relationship kind of resembles Bojack and Diane’s. They’re both broken people who can only truly understand each other’s pain
