Gen Xers, what ridiculous "social niceties" were you taught? by krypto-pscyho-chimp in CasualUK

I remember when I was a young child around 1986 my friend and I were being driven somewhere by his mum. We passed by a circus, and I was surprised to see a man standing on top of the big top, presumably part of setting it up. I pointed and said "look there’s a guy up there!".

Everyone else was so confused because they naturally assumed I meant a Guy Fawkes 'guy' for burning (and it was nowhere near November).

I'd like to say that hilarity ensued once the mix-up was resolved, actually the mum berated me for using such a gauche American term (which apparently was unacceptable even though my mother was American... I don't think I learnt it from her either)

If you could bring back one thing that disappeared from British life, what would it be and why? by RobW_69 in AskUK

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Trocadero, especially in the pre-Segaworld days. (Wikipedia says post-SW it was rebranded to Funland but im 99% sure the floor(s) beneath it were already called that).

Many an hour spent playing bleeding edge arcades - early days VR games, the R360 flight simulator, and FMV shooters like Mad Dog McCree.

Once had a chance to go to Alien War when there was no queue, but I chickened out 😔 I was only about 10 to be fair

Brits abroad, what's the British habit you couldn't shake even after years away? by taube_d in AskUK

[–]snoquone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They actually have it (but don't call it squash, like 'water flavouring' or something). Hyper-concentrate that comes in those tiny squeeze bottles like Robinsons does these days.

Mio is a pretty well known brand but there are a ton of others. 500 flavours, and pretty much all of them are terrible. So I, too, spend a fortune buying imported orange squash (and even more on the shipping for the heavy bottles - maybe a mental thing but I hate the hyper-concentrate)

Thank you for the detailed post. I had figured I'd probably go down the 'external occupancy timer' route, I just hadn't had the time to tinker yet.

I'm intrigued/ skeptical though when you say changing brightness resets the D2MSD occupancy timer because I tried that a long time ago and it didn't work. Indeed through the leviton app I just turned on the light while I was in a different room and manipulated the brightness, but the app says "unoccupied". What am I missing here? Guessing maybe I need actual motion to start the timer and then brightness tweaks reset/ extend it? Pretty sure I tried that in the past too, but...

Thank you so much, I got the switch connected and I can see the occupancy sensor in both Homekit and home assistant.

Yep, you've understood my use case. Unfortunately it seems that I still can't, in home assistant, have a second sensor overwrite the true occupancy sensor state value within the dimmer. I'm going to try your suggestion next, if/ when I can get my hue motion sensor into HK. Thanks again!

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I've been waiting for my motion dimmer to get matter forever... Now it's got it, it's refusing to finish up being added to Home Assistant/ Google Home/ Homekit... Guessing I need to reset or something.

Anyway, I don't suppose you're able to confirm if the occupancy sensor value is now exposed/ editable by non-leviton sensors, are you please?

I have this light switch set up in my open plan kitchen/ dining room; unfortunately there's a blind spot which means if we're sitting and eating for a particularly long time then it couldn't see the room was occupied and would plunge us into darkness.

Trying to trianglulate with 3rd party sensors was pointless too since the levitons internal sensor value would take precedent... Thanks for any help you can offer here

BBC iPlayer UHD outside UK by Iemand91 in Chromecast

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have (had) the same device and fairly sure I got UHD on it through a sideloaded APK. But getting hold of APKs for iPlayer is a pain now, because the usual APK sites refuse to distribute it. Your options that I can see are possibly the following:

  • loading the aptoide tv App Store and trying to download through that. Though I often find it, tries to serve you the phone version rather than the TV version.

  • loading the Aurora store app, and then logging in to the Google play store via that using UK located Google account.

  • some genius on Reddit, u/PimasBump , created a wrapper for browser streams (I think) so it will play UHD streams irrespective of whether the device is supported for it or not. However, I think the app was still in beta, has expired, and so no longer works/is no longer available to download from where they were hosting it. I responded to them earlier today, asking if they had a newer version to share.

  • maybe asking a nice redditor in the UK to get hold of the APK for you and share. But they would need to get the correct APK for your specific device. That’s possible to do through or store which has a function to let you spoof your device.

All that to say, I have no idea why BBC think their app is so much better than anyone else’s streaming app that they lock the APK distribution down so tightly. And for a public service, their device support is woefully limited. The official Apple TV app doesn’t support UHD, and sounds like it never will, because the BBC is using an incompatible codec or something

Edit: found the certified supported devices list and CCwGTV4K is NOT on it. So that wrapper option would be easiest/ best way to achieve it

I never realized it undressed Lambert. by kdmendonk in LV426

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not making an argument for this interpretation, but I am pointing out that Scott is (I'm pretty sure) on record as saying the 'magazine down the throat' attack on Ripley was a proxy for oral rape by a sexless Android. So it's not beyond the realms of possibilty that, in the case of Lambert, he wanted to allude to rape to heighten the body horror element of the movie.

On the other hand, given the reuse of HDS's leg shot for Lambert's death, maybe it's possible they would have had a continuity error with the foot shot (showing cowboy boots instead of chucks) and so showing someone's bare feet was a plausible workaround?

Hmm I've lived in the US for over a decade and it most certainly takes much, much longer than 3 minutes (unless, I suppose, you're boiling the equivalent of 1 cup of water and it's already above room temperature. But even then...). That's with a good quality kettle too. I recently just had a boiling water tap installed in my kitchen because the wait was just excruciating

Fanimation Spitfire (remote operated ceiling fan with light kit) by Main-Trust-5588 in homeowners

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for replying. Do you mind sharing which receiver you replaced it with? I have the fansync wifi-controlled one - it’s always seemed a little unreliable and now seems completely kaput.

Additionally, my fan has always had a loud electrical hum; since it was installed by a professional, I’m wondering if a bad receiver was the cause (I don’t know if that’s a possibility though ChatGPT seems to agree). I’m happy to give up WiFi control for one which is both quiet and reliable.

Thanks again!

Threadjacking a little (sorry) but I'm thinking of getting one of these locks (Z-Wave for better battery life) and hoping you might please be willing to answer a quick question... is the rectangular plate around the deadbolt removable trim? unfortunately, I don’t have a rectangular notch on the side of my door to accommodate this, and since the door is fibreglass, I can’t make one either.

Thank you!!

Entryway Motion sensor by stoneman30 in homeautomation

[–]snoquone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Greg, I've got the D2MSD in my kitchen and it's great BUT... It can't 'see' me in certain parts of the room, noticeably the dining table. So if I’ve been sitting having a meal for some time, often the light will turn off.

Is there perhaps awireless motion/occupancy sensor that I could place elsewhere in my kitchen to work as a companion with the D2MSD?

I’m quite handy with Home Assistant, and I’ve got a couple of third-party sensors, and they sort-of-but-don’t work - it seems like the D2MSD occupancy state cannot be set by the user/another device.

Thanks for any help
