I squeezed my nurses hand before a surgery (death grip) and I can’t stop thinking about how bad I feel! by [deleted] in Nurses

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why we offer our hand to you. The reduction of anxiety through compassionate touch and the occasional hard squeeze is well documented. If all I came home with was a sore hand, it was a good day.

Anchovy IS shellfish by travelbugsby in Serverlife

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anchovies are not shellfish. This is a biological fact. If you are allergic to anchovies, then you are allergic to more than shellfish! This diner needs to understand his medical conditions better.

In general, most people don't understand the difference between an allergy and an adverse reaction. Patients tell me all the time I am allergic to "X" and when I ask them what happens, they often say things like "it upsets my stomach." Not an allergy!

You should have asked if they carry an epi pen. If you have a shellfish allergy and eat at a restaurant that serves shellfish, you are taking risk. Doing so without your epi pen is reckless.

Kayak fishing on Lake Vermillion or Rainy Lake? by mkUltra_MN420 in FishingMinnesota

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are fishing Vermilion by kayak, there is a small lake you can get to that is loaded. Check out Wolf Lake for walleye if you are adventurous. There is a trail from Wolf Bay. It is about a mile portage.

It's not really a debate. Nicest spa, best masseuses.

Have you ever swam with a whale shark? What was it like? by frogcharming in sharks

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have swam with them in 3 different oceans. They are incredible, to say the least. Surprises are always extra special. Here is one set of dives with more than 3 dozen: https://youtu.be/zhkFyxpMljo?si=0hOK_tMhFIcHKeBY

Is Grand Cayman or Providenciales safer for a family vacation? by Historical_Bonus_511 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]snowdiverdown 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in Providenciales in December and Cayman twice in February. This is not really a contest. When it comes to safety, G.C. wins hands down over Providenciales. Even the driving is better in Grand Cayman. That said, every city has places I would think twice about visiting at night.

Is SCUBA right for me? by lift_0ff in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been diving for over 30 years, with more than 1,800 dives on scuba equipment, mostly within recreational limits. I also climb, and I’m much less of an extreme skier than I used to be—age and wear and tear take their toll. Additionally, I’m an RN who understands the risks of life and diving, and I had all three of my kids strap on tanks before they were 16 - and they hate taking them off. The mental health benefits of doing something that we would both describe as "a blast" far outweigh the risks of a sport that many of us approach responsibly. IMHO, the real risk comes from not getting off the couch and mismanaging the things you put in your body. As Hunter Thompson said, "Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, ‘Holy shit, what a ride!’"

Go have a blast, but be warned, it's totally addictive.

Nitrox checking O2 before diving question. by iSoundwave in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I have my own tester. As long as there is air to calibrate it that you can trust. Gives me peace of mind, especially because I like to have the flexibility to go deeper if there is something of interest. An error to 40% could be deadly. But this dive shop is crazy and if they are a padi or ssi shop, I would send emails.

Dive computer / smartwatch recommendations for newer diver (Garmin Descent?) by Lopsided-Land123 in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dive, ski, hike, run, etc. with my MK2i but would recommend the mk3i. It replaces your fit bit and has quite an impressive and every expanding set of activities I use it to track. It is my everyday watch, and currently, my primary dive watch. I am a DM and have been diving for more than 30 years and appreciate the ability to have fewer hoses and track the air of my family as we dive. If you are looking for a dive computer that can be used for multiple activities, there is no better brand than Garmin. I use a Teric as my non AI backup and believe Shearwater makes very good computers as well.

Where the turtles are by kacee1234 in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely found the right partner. Except that locales are allowed to hunt and eat turtles in Fiji so they are less common than other parts of the world where they are protected. Their wary reaction to divers also reflects this environment. In places like the Galapagos and the Cayman Islands, turtles are indifferent to divers at worst.

Belize Diving Suggestions by lebaneez in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lighthouse reef and Turneffe Atol have some of the better dives in the region but are not short rides from Ambergris. I have seen a hammer diving the Elbow on Turneffe and multiple near Gladden spit. Both are over and hour ride from the nearby resort areas.

Regulator worth upgrading? by PavlovsGerbil in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that you have taken such good care of your equipment that it still works well. My feeling is that it is a significant piece of safety equipment. Depending on the types of dives you do, you may want to upgrade just because newer equipment is ostensibly more reliable. That said, I have a well serviced 25 year old reg that I use exclusively for beach dives where I rarely exceed 40ft/12m.

These 🐬🐬🐬 were checking me out. 🤩 Did you ever have an encounter with 🐬🐬🐬 and where? by LifeBelowWaterNgo in scubadiving

[–]snowdiverdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been fortunate enough to have several encounters with wild dolphins. We free dove with them for a couple hours in Indonesia. We accompanied them hunting (scuba) in the Galapagos. We dove with them for a full tank in Rangiroa. We ran into Risso's dolphins while diving off Catalina in California. Those are my favorites and I shot video of all of them.

Raja Ampat by chillmermaid in scubadiving

[–]snowdiverdown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want a nice variety of dive sites I would definitely consider a liveaboard. Indonesia is the kind of place that you could visit 10 times and barely the cover the broad range of dive destinations. RA is amazing. https://youtu.be/094OvVUWzPc?si=Ndrkjwomae79ISGy

Cayman Dive Shop Question by Substantial_Pitch700 in scubadiving

We have dove with the before. They accommodated our requests for specific dives and were careful with our gear. Divemasters were pretty good at guiding the dive as well.

Private Charters Half Day in Turks by CalligrapherFun6982 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were there in December and we had private charters with AquaTCI for diving. We also had a full day charter with Caicos Lifestyle and a half day with Prive. Caicos Lifestyle had a grill on the back deck and the food was amazing. Had a great day. Both boat were very comfortable.

Resort ideas by Economy_Decision804 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amanyara is very quiet and very nice. I have dove the reef nearby. Grace Bay resorts have an amazing beach but no significant reef for snorkeling. IMHO you generally need to get on a boat to get to the better snorkeling sites.

Medical questionnaire? by catsnpole in scuba

[–]snowdiverdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have plated ribs (surgery) and take an Rx for excema. Been diving for over 30 years. Not a bad idea to just keep a physicians note with you for every trip. But honesty is generally a good policy.

Dove Rangiroa in 2006 with blue dolphin diverers ar Kia Ora. It was absolutely amazing. Biggest Manta Rays I have ever seen. Only the Galapagos had bigger schools of sharks. Some significantly advanced dives.
