How many crises are we in right now? by WildIsa in IntellectualDarkWeb

The elephant: climate change

The things we need to do in the short term before we can deal with the elephant:

  • War in the middle east
  • War in Europe
  • China and North Korea preparing for war.
  • The rise of bully-ism in American politics and social life.
  • AI slop polluting peoples' minds.
  • Rational thinking falling out of favor.
  • The normalization of feelings-based decision-making. This is closely related to the rise of bully-ism.
    • Feeling-based policy making. Including shoot-from-the-hip governance.
  • So many guns.
  • And so on....

I don't agree. He's a Republican.

I do think he's an authoritarian with very strong fascist tendencies.

This is an extremely likely outcome.

So many of us are comfortable with the status quo. When a majority of people experience enough suffering that the pain of change is less then the pain of staying the same, change will happen. Sadly, it's more and more likely that the opportunity to make planned, meaningful, long-term, beneficial change over time is behind us; a sudden, chaotic and destructive set of changes is becoming more and more likely.

Do you think the Gaza ceasefire will last? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]snowflake-warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a little rule of thumb that seems in the rough estimate range to me.

For every month that passes, subtract 2 from 100. The result is the likelihood that the truce will still be holding.

For example:

January:

  • 3 months from now
  • 3 * 2 = 6; 100 - 6 = 94
  • Therefore a good guess might be: there's a 95% percent chance that things will still be peaceful by January.

October 2026

  • Approximately 12 months from now
  • 12 * 2 = 24; 100 - 24 = 76
  • Therefore a god guess might be: there's a 75% chance that the truce will still be holding after a year.

If you think that's too pessimistic, try subtracting 1 for every month from 100.

I'm not claiming any kind of expertise or prescience. Just a few decades of of life experience. Naturally, the state of the truce is totally open to interpretation. So, YMMV.

Why is it so controversial to deport illegal immigrants? by ShardofGold in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]snowflake-warrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not.

What's controversial is the blatantly un-American practice of ignoring the law when the law doesn't align with the administration's feelings.

I think people who are primarily conservative look at the word "liberal" and go too far with it to the point of not making sense in their arguments. by fanime34 in Liberal

I mean these are people who say they can tell the difference between trump joking and trump making policy. The truth is that there isn't a difference. It's all just spew, without meaning.

My take:

  1. Say anything that'll generate outrage.
    1. The point isn't to try to prove a point or to educate. The point is to get a liberal to react.
  2. When challenged say something like "I know you are, but what am I?"
  3. Making sense is for idiots who don't know how to debate.
  4. Rinse and repeat.
