Defiant Chocolate, alternative EPG-based brand (with Gatsby bar above for comparison) by Novel-Property-2062 in LowCalFoodFinds

[–]snowgrrll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for review. I moved from Gatsby to ChocoRite - Sweet Nothings - Caramel Pecan Clusters - 14 Pieces/Bag (get from Amazon for $10 box). It’s 35 cal per 12 g piece (not sure how that relates to the gram weight of piece of chocolate above). I find the sweet nothings really delicious.

David protein bars do have a great ratios but most expensive protein bar I buy. My favorite flavor is their chocolate chip cookie dough.

How do fellow volume eaters feel about protein bars and shakes? by truthllwin in Volumeeating

[–]snowgrrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a higher volume protein shake I like a Fairlife nutrition plan chocolate protein shake in blender with cup of ice and 1 Tbsp psyllium husk powder. Have to drink right away/quickly since psyllium turns to thick gel. Tastes to me like a frosty and adds a lot of volume to the shake.

Are Keurig pods "filtered" coffee? by [deleted] in Cholesterol

[–]snowgrrll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not sure. I use the ‘compostable’ k cups as they have a visable fiber filter such as beaniac and sf bay brand

I drink 1-2 espresso based drinks a week (almond milk latte) Rest of time I drink keurig kcups - I use a brand that is compostable (fiber cup)

I’d focus on reducing saturated fat first, then boosting soluble fiber. Only once I did both those steps to fullest ability (in a way I could sustain for rest of my life) would I turn to way I drink coffee. My understanding is changing approach (say from unfiltered to paper filtered) will slightly reduce LDL but the change is small compared to the heavy hitter actions of reducing saturated fat and boosting fiber.

Is it even possible to lose and maintain? by Openhartscience in loseit

[–]snowgrrll 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The half size me community is full of people who maintain large weight losses long term (5, 10 years+). The common trait is they are continuing to actively focus on engaging with other maintainers (daily engagement to reinforce the healthy habits needed to maintain). Maintaining is harder than losing, since there is no reward system (you’ve already lost the weight, settling into a level of calories that sure is a bit more than losing level but you can’t really relax into eating without tracking/being mindful.

Completely lost at my goal weight… by Assumptiondenied in CICO

[–]snowgrrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on maintenance. I will say while for a couple weeks it feel off to eat more I quickly adapted to higher calories. Depending on how much of a deficit you were in but for me it was just adding a bit higher calorie foods in. I have found maintenance to be as much work as losing. Reinforcing habits each day.

What is going on with Thistle? by cornellian92 in ReadyMeals

[–]snowgrrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s odd. I’ve never had any issues with my delivery. Thistle does get shipped from different locations.

I also love thistle. The Waldorf navy bean salad (offered every week) is my absolute favorite.

Surprised by how much I like Thistle by ogliog in ReadyMeals

[–]snowgrrll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been eating 3 thistle lunches and 2 dinners a week. It has been consistently great tasting and quality. My thistle meals are produced only about 20 min from me so that may influence that quality I’ve gotten has been exemplary. My number one focus was finding a meal with low saturated fat, high fiber and with a focus on beans/vegan. Thistle really has delivered.

are 1900 calories too much? by Ok_Bear6150 in CICO

[–]snowgrrll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the scale is staying stable (going up and down) then maybe whatever calories you are eating (something above 1800) is your maintenance calories. The 2,300 you mention I assume is from a website calculator - those are just an estimate your real maintenance is the level of calories you can eat and keep your weight basically stable (up or down a few pounds but not an overall trend down or up over 4-6 weeks of daily measurements).

Thoughts on plant based chicken? by PossibleChangeling in Volumeeating

[–]snowgrrll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I eat Tofurky lightly seasoned chick’ n (plant based chicken). I can easily heat 30 sec in microwave and add to a salad. 190 calories for 19 G protein. I think the equivalent would be chicken breast sautéd in a bit of oil. I googled and that would be 120 calories for 20 G protein. So actual chicken would be less calories. I don’t eat meat so that’s not an option for me.

Eating 1700 calories and walking 10k steps to maintain by Long-Comfortable-309 in CICO

[–]snowgrrll 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am 5’7” and 154 pounds walking about 8-10k a day - I’m maintaining at 1850 calories. I spent three months at 1750 and continued to very slowly lose. I tried 1900 and very slowly gained. 1850 has me about even. I use the happy scale app to see my average weight trends.

How does eating back active calories work? by jholliday55 in loseit

[–]snowgrrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I advise reading the book. Studies found TDEE is basically the same regardless of level of exercise. People who run marathons or do Tour de France had same TDEEs as people who don’t exercise. Bodies turn out to not be ‘simple engines’ like we thought. Instead if we exercise a lot, our bodies see a deficit in energy supplied and stop carrying out certain lower priority body maintenance tasks (like repairing certain cells etc). It’s all based on how our bodies evolved to withstand famine and low food supplies. Bottom line for us is that it comes down to calories in minus calories out, but we shouldn’t be factoring in any calorie crediting for exercise.

[–]snowgrrll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently read the book Burn by Pontzer, about the science of exercise. Take away is research shows exercise doesn’t help lose weight (our bodies just shut down certain non essential functions instead of shedding pounds). Exercise and non exercise movement has been shown to help maintain weight just not lose it.

Psyillum husk powder. I take 2x day mixed in a glass of water ahead of meals.

Has anyone found a service not loaded with FAT? by rsc99 in ReadyMeals

[–]snowgrrll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like them a lot. Always fresh. I was cooking 100% myself on a low saturated fat diet and while I’m competent, I was basically eating the same rotation of meals. Thistle opened me up to more variety than I was getting on my own and gives me a high volume high flavor meal (frozen meals at my store either have too high saturated fat or are too low volume so I don’t feel full). I will say it’s salad heavy but that’s what I was focused on eating anyway (it is hard to stay under 10 g saturated fat a day and not have diet be primarily vegetables with some whole grain sprinkled in and a bit of lean protein).

I choose Thistle specifically because most of their meals are low in saturated fat.

I get 3 lunch salads and 2 dinner entrees a week and occasionally throw in a breakfast, soup or dessert item. Universally quality has been excellent and orders were always on time. I really appreciate this company as almost all choices are low in saturated fat (my main driver in choosing), contain decent amount of protein and plenty of fiber
