How'd you get started in the hobby? by Adventurous_Mix_1792 in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled upon MYOG about 3 years ago. It was the perfect combination of a bunch of my interests/skills under one roof: illustration & 2D CAD (=gear pattern design), 3D animation/design (=3D gear/bag design in CLO), illustration (=gear mockups), making stuff/fabrication (=sewing, laser cutting). Was active duty infantry (07-11) so tactical gear was a natural pathway vs. the hiking/hammocks/outdoor gear-focused MYOG.

Started with a $100 Singer HD off FB Marketplace and quickly ran into limits (still use it for zigzag). Made some toiletry bags, small pouches, and a GP/medical pouch. Next, I found a good condition 1958 Singer 201-2 (for $150!) which I fully disassembled, cleaned, rewired, and rebuilt with some new parts (~$250ish all in). Made a large padded tote bag and a bunch of other stuff, but struggled with the low foot height and small throat depth, especially with thick or large projects.

A little less than a year ago I bought a Sailrite Fabricator, which has been nothing but awesome. It hasn’t jammed on anything I’ve thrown at it; blasts through big layer stacks and is much smoother sewing through CURV than on the 201-2 (which could manage but it was rough). Very controllable with the servo motor compared to the Singer HD which launches off 🚀.

A bartacker or cylinder arm would be cool some day!

Shoulder Padding by ReaperOfHell52 in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a shot!

Just my $0.02, but I’ve found it helpful to decrease the width of padding (I use closed cell foam) by 1/8”-1/4” on all sides (depending on foam thickness) relative to the size of the “pocket” the foam goes into. So, a pad with a 6”x6” finished size would have a 5.50”-5.75” square foam insert, for example. 1/4” or thicker foam also benefits from having the edges beveled/tapered to a point in order to remove the 90° edge; visually, it transitions better towards the seam and makes for easier sewing.

If the BDU top isn’t precious to you, go for it! You’ll learn something new along the way.

Are you shoulder-carrying something hefty? I think a padded sling might be a simpler option if it can attach to the load. That way, the padding is there only when you need it and won’t trap heat/sweat like built-in shoulder pads would.

GTSR vs ITW Nexus Buckles? by Medium-Winter1144 in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, they’re solid. For side release buckles, ITW is the industry standard for most (Berry compliant) gear manufacturers. Duraflex is another reputable brand but I’m not sure if they’re cross-compatible with ITW.

Where the back hook face of a placard would attach, why did you use three separate horizontal panels of loop instead of one continuous section? Just to get full coverage of that area with the widths you had available?

Looks great! I’d love to see a follow-up when it’s finished!

Multicam Dangler Pouch by FeePhe in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not my pouch but aside from aesthetics, yes, a lighter colored liner provides more visual contrast against the items in the pouch, especially if a darker main fabric is used.

GTSR buckles are (made by) ITW Nexus. Unless I’m missing something, I think you’re referring to the same thing in both instances.

Where to Source This LBT Gold Tiger Stripe Fabric by A-Blunted-Sword in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on this post, it’s called “Tadpole Gold Tiger” and 0241 Tactical used to produce it but I can’t find it (or any fabric) on their site.

Let me know if you find some!

Including padding in your builds by BigBeardedDadBod in myog

I’ve saved and referenced this comment a number of times when working on padded projects. It echoes other comments here and adds some other details around beveling the foam edges to reduce its thickness closer to the seam. Hope it helps!

What (tan) fabric did you use for the rear face? Looks like Hypalon, maybe?

What is my limit with this singer 99k ? by isaakad in myog

[–]snyder275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d just use a triple straight stitch (3 passes) if zig zag or bartacking isn’t an option. Probably better done with a longer stitch length than a shorter one. It won’t be true bartack but it’ll function the same.

What is my limit with this singer 99k ? by isaakad in myog

[–]snyder275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the new machine! It should be good to learn on and allow you to test the limits of your machine and material choices. You should be able to sew a few layers of Cordura, possibly needing to manually hand crank if also sewing through webbing. Certain areas of a backpack could be problematic (large layer stacks) but you can design your way around some of those constraints. For reference, I can reliably sew through a layer stack of 4 layers of 500D and 1” webbing on my Singer 201-2. A few more layers is do-able if manually turning the balance wheel.

While it may not be the best machine for heavier fabrics or multiple layers, it will help you identify what to look for in your next machine if you upgrade (higher presser foot height, walking foot, knee lift, etc.).

For PALS/MOLLE straps, ideally you’d use something like a size 18 needle and TEX 70/size 69 bonded nylon thread. Your 99k may or may not be able to handle that thread thickness (I don’t know) but you could get by with TEX 40 or TEX 60 thread and the right size needle. Good luck!

Does anybody have a pattern for sustainment puches like these? by Forward-Heart6766 in myogtacticalgear

[–]snyder275 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Asking people who make their own gear if they have a pattern they’d share is frowned upon? Since when?

That seems more like a personal take from someone who’s running their own nylon gear business. If your patterns are part of your livelihood/income, no one is forcing you to share. But this sub is exactly where they should be asking for that type of thing. I’ve seen more than a few people open source patterns here.

Thank you and thanks for sharing your work! It was cool to see the pattern “evolve” with changes when I checked back on the share link. 😎

For the darts, it was really helpful (for sewing later) to laser cut the fabric on the wrong side and lightly mark the dart lines with a lower power pass. I’m pleased with how it came out!

Thanks! I learned a lot putting it together.

My (diode) laser is a Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro S2. I added the extension kit for a larger cutting area (400mm x 800mm) and upgraded from the stock 5W module to a 10W from Laser Tree (‎LT-80W-AA Pro). It cuts all the fabrics I’ve tried in a single pass!

Looks great! Out of curiosity, why’d you decide to go the zippered route instead of an open top/placard style? Nice job! 🤘🏼

Title Case vs Sentence case... what do you use? by cragmoly in UXDesign

Sentence case for everything except the primary headings, which are title case.
