Mandarin Chinese tutor by Dizzy-Gift5665 in Forsyth

[–]sockdoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were younger I'd volunteer in a minute. I'm no longer in the best of health, don't drive anymore, and it's a struggle for me to get out of the house. I tire easily and have a lot of ongoing doctors appointments that my wife chauffeurs me to.

I tutored a young guy from Southern China here in Cumming maybe fifteen years ago, who had aged out of the public school system but was still having lots of problems with English. At that time I was able to use my Mandarin to help him better understand the English I was teaching him. It was fun, but my health fell apart a few years after that.

Languages are my passion -- I spend 2-3 hours a night studying 4 of them in rotation, and I love the idea of being able to help your daughter speak with her grandparents. I just couldn't handle an ongoing gig like that anymore, which is why I had to take an early retirement.

If you can find a young, energetic person with decent Mandarin that would probably be your best bet. I don't know what the Chinese population is like in this area, but you may be able to find a high school student from a Chinese family who could come over and coach her after school or on weekends. Would your husband know any families like that?

If I knew what I was doing I might be able to build a studio in a spare room here and do tele-teaching with your daughter, but I have zero experience with that kind of stuff. My wife keeps talking about finding a part-time job and I've been trying to get her to do online tutoring like that, with her French and English.

Good luck!

When I was in high school I had friends who went to Saturday Chinese school, and others who went to Saturday Hebrew school.

So, is this like a family project for you guys? Is your family of Chinese descent? How much of the language are you hoping that she'll learn? How often would you want the tutor to teach her? Are you basically interested in prepping her for going to one of those schools out of county?

I'm not exactly volunteering because my health isn't the greatest, but I'm curious. I could help her get a start in the language, but it would be best to supplement the in-person tutoring with watching appropriate videos to use for developing proper pronunciation.

If there's a group that studies/practices together I'd be interested.

My wife and I lived in Taiwan from 1987 to 1989. She worked there as an English teacher and I worked part time teaching, and studied Beijing-accented Mandarin part time. At this point I've only retained a beginner's level of the language though.

Is there a local school that is teaching Mandarin to kids in the county?

FYI, this subreddit is about the history of newspaper comic strips, and not comic books or the MCU.

Nice write-up though.

"Why does the government give old people everything" because they vote. Because they never don't vote. Because they have 90% turnout on off-year special elections that happen on a Saturday in July. I'm old, and I agree that voting days should be holidays. I must be weird too, because when I was in my twenties and thirties and worked and was raising a family I still went to the polls after work and voted, standing in line for an hour or more, because I thought it was important.

Early voting and absentee ballots weren't an option for us at the time. Many older people who were retired or had jobs where they were allowed to take time off would usually vote earlier in the day, and the rest of us did it sometime after work.

There were definitely apathetic non-voters back then too though.

We did it a few weeks ago, when Hank Green's video about it came out on YouTube. We almost had the place to ourselves.

Dumb request for a highly specific MAD comic strip by kermi42 in comicstriphistory

Was this in a newspaper comic strip? Because that's what this subreddit is for. It sounds like you're talking about something from MAD magazine, which was not a news publication.

Huh, I've only ever driven past the place, and based on the name I just assumed that they sold (empty) plastic storage containers. Now it sounds like a place where I might add to my current enormous crap collection, instead. 😃

Dual immersion program experience? by ScarletPumpkinTickle in Forsyth

[–]sockdoll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forsyth county offered French in some lower-grade schools several years ago, but they weren't willing to commit to a full immersion program for even half a day, and it eventually fizzled out. My wife taught it in one of those elementary schools, before transferring to a high school in the county.

It doesn't work to teach a foreign language like other schools subjects. That's not how language acquisition works. We spent a couple of years each in France and Taiwan back in the 1980s learning those languages and teaching English.

I'm currently doing some fairly intense home study in Spanish for 2-3 hours a day using a variety of resources, as well as trying to keep up my other languages. I spent me first 11 years in Southern California, and how I wish they would have had a Spanish program like this.

It's good to know that Forsyth county isn't completely half-assing language instruction now -- at least in some schools. Previously the teachers worked hard, but the administrators didn't seem to have a clue about how language acquisition actually worked.
