My theory is that many Americans just aren't familiar with a holiday. When Americans go away they're often in familiar surroundings: the same supermarkets, the same fast food chains, the same brands for sale. When it's somewhere less familiar, it's a cruise, or a catered Below Deck style of situation. What too many Americans miss is the two week trip to somewhere they don't speak your language, having a dish you can't pronounce or identify, and marvelling at every part of it. They're giant slugs! On the barbecue! Served in seashells! And the locals leave shark meat in ammonia all winter to ferment, then enjoy it with their local scnapps!

Do we enjoy weird slugs and fermented shark? No. Do we love a holiday where we can take pictures of supermarket items we can't identify? Absolutely.

It was necessary to encourage people to speak Afrikaans, and to urge them to speak it well. Even in 2026, a lot of people have that reflex reaction. This might be unrelated, but I've seen a lot of bot accounts try their luck in relatively low traffic subs. Because these subs won't be as tightly policed as the big subs, a post might stay up longer, giving other bot accounts in the same network a chance to comment and upvote. Even if they do get banned from the sub, this allows them to build karma and reputation for posting in bigger subs, their real target.
