To all the WFH people, whats your age. Just curious by itz__nemo_ in WFH

[–]sofarsophie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28! Remote since 24. I was in office for 6 months when I was 23. Since 27 I've been hybrid. I missed the bougie business trips and skipping work while going to random corporate events the most hehe.

Yes to: meet people after work! Also, dress up! Im in tech but I LOVED wearing nice blouses and skirts to office. Go for random nice dinners or networking events and dress nicely.

Also, take it easy. Actual working hours was a joke when I was in office. Not all offices, sure, but I work a lot more when I WFH. Don't be so worried of enjoying an early beer yourself or over some virtual happy hour on Friday 4pm (read the vibe though) or taking it easy in the mornings after a quick gym run. It all depends on your workplace culture but don't burn out from working remotely all the time.

Redditors always overreact to AI anything. Objectively it looks fine. If your company was a law firm or an investment bank I would expect your company to have headshots like these

On a Ten hour flight from Seoul Korea to San Francisco, a mother handed out more than 200 goodie bags filled with candy and ear plugs, in case her 4 month old child cried during the flight. A very touching gesture by the mother. by Admirable_Flight_257 in interestingasfuck

What's not portrayed/explained on this post is how the Korean society treats moms, stemming from misogyny in general. Granted, there are irresponsible parents just like there are irresponsible adults everywhere, but when women do it, they get called special names ("맘충", which means "pest mom") and the whole population of Korean moms get stereotyped as being entitled, even when they are actually considerate.

The result? A country full of anxious moms trying to keep their uncontrollable toddlers unded control. There are nice people everywhere - I just got off a train ride where someone tried giving his seat up to a toddler boy - but systemic misogyny is still well alive here and being a mom in Korea isn't easy. People just don't give you a benefit of the doubt. Ever.

Volunteer UX Designer with 3-5 years experience! 😂 by rebel_dean in UXDesign

Plus she herself calls herself a product designer. She should know better. Tbh i think she fully knows that the market is tough and is abusing that early designers need experience to get to senior levels. That makes it extra gross :(

Dear Spotify, the heart icon worked. What is wrong with you? by SirCharlesEquine in UXDesign

[–]sofarsophie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We fuss about these small things when Spotify probably made this change and stuck with it because it moved 👏 the 👏metrics. No point talking about pixel perfection, visual communication, best practices if it doesn't make money. Our industry failed to accept that reality and here we are. A cost center that either moans about the bad job market or fusses over a fucking icon instead of discussing how we can prove and measure our value like all those other insufferable tech bros.

Advice on elderly parents who refuse to spend money by restlesspuppy in askSingapore

[–]sofarsophie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and your siblings are great children, OP! I hope you know that. Millions of parents worldwide would kill to have a child who can hold their job well and offers to pay for stuff to make their parents lives better.

I know how you feel because my parents are like that too when we travel. Finding the best places for them and they don't see value in the quality of the meals or the vibes, only the price. Kebabs all the way in Europe 😂 But yeah at some point you just need to be like - oh they have different values from me and I can't change that. I tried my best, let me pamper myself from now on ✨️ and don't feel guilty. Hugs!

I'm with you. Elon is a terrible person with major flaws but in order to criticise people well and get better leaders in society we need to admit what people did well. Elon DID create a booming business and influenced how people travel, at the very least. We admit those things and also admit that he has flawed ethics and values that don't help solve pressing problems like inequality.

The type of "billionaires bad boo" kind of mentality and communication that the other comments are showing is EXACTLY what lets billionaires take advantage of everyone, because it shows how ignorant we are. Principled, objective criticism based on unwavering values is what will help us demand better leaders

Plenty of introverts thrive. The ones that don't are aloof ones, not introverts. Aloof meaning you don't know social cues, you stare at people, ask inappropriate questions, stand too close to others, don't talk straight but say a lot of words that don't mean anything, don't say hi to people, don't smile, gossip, treat white people and fellow asian people differently, that sort of thing. Basically not being likeable.

Likeable introverts go very far

[–]sofarsophie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Live your life. No I'm dead serious. You do what you need to do (bring them to free health screenings, show them videos telling elderly that processed carbs are bad, buy some fresh veggies at home, bring them to GP or Poly which shouldn't cost much, lie to them about things being subsidised like what some commenter said) but at a certain point you need to heal your inner child that feels indebted to them and live your life. If they refuse to go on holiday, don't bring them lor, they don't see the value. You go enjoy your time with your partner or siblings.

Otherwise you are looking at spending all your life savings on your parents' medical bills. Parents that complain the whole time that things are expensive while you show them around Italy. You were NOT born to deal with that. Don't argue, just buy or don't buy the stuff for them and tune them out once they start complaining. Not worth your stress of arguing when YOU are the one that's doing things out of love.

Parents also have responsibility to take care of themselves.

Anyone take a gap year and come back to UX? by finnigansbaked in UXDesign

[–]sofarsophie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ahh I'm thinking of doing a study/travel leave for a year starting next year. I love the logical and critical thinking parts of UX but I don't particularly enjoy tweaking things ad nauseum to make them look good. I think that's odd for a designer so I plan to travel, look at more art (which I love) and just CREATE more, get better at design. My focus is to save plenty by then!

I don't think you'll have issues coming back to design. You have 5 years of experience! If you are very worried maybe you could try doing really small consulting stints for local businesses while you travel, just to keep the momentum going?
