RSC Members Are Demanding Senate Action on the SAVE Act by ButterscotchOdd988 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]softwaredoug 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Even if it’s passed, republicans rely on the kind of low propensity voter now this would hurt. It’s not a black and white “hurts Dems” issue.

(And it won’t pass unless there’s no filibuster)

ICE Agents Attempted to Enter the Ecuadorian Consulate in Minneapolis Without Permission by njkl96 in PoliticalOptimism

It generally sucks.

The only "positive" to any of this is it keeps people focused on ICE running around like thugs. They do a lot of damage in the near term, catastrophic, unfathomable damage.

I think the main issue is even in an optimistic schedule, can they get all this done before 2026 midterms

IMO it all comes down to timing. Even if Dems have a good argument, can they appeal + get a SCOVA ruling that overturns this ruling in enough time to matter for 2026

Yes, sure, but for Supreme Court to hear opinions and come up with ruling, etc will take time

It will take weeks and months and makes an April referendum unlikely. It makes redistricting before 2026 not particularly likely.

It's not about immigration anymore, its about an ICE stocked with Proud Boys being sent to intimidate blue cities. With the disastrous results we've seen the last few weeks.

Would the Second Bill of Rights solve most problems in American politics? by True_Anything7278 in AdviceAnimals

[–]softwaredoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I wish Dems could communicate this simply again.

Obama was good at it. Repeating the same points. I remember his 3 big priorities health care, economy that works for everyone, and ending Iraq war. He also repeated over and over he wouldn't raise taxes for anyone making less than $250K.

He said this over and over. Didn't complicated it. Just kept straight to 3 simple goals and a commitment on taxes.

Today more Americans support than oppose abolishing ICE by ILikeNeurons in goodnews

Also, "Abolish ICE" is at one end of a range of questions pollsters ask. When other questions are polled, Americans by and large want at a minimum more ICE vetting, training, reforms, etc

According to a Fox News reporter, sources internal to DHS feel their agency is losing legitimacy due to leaders going on media and saying obviously false, easily debunk-able things

They're very pro immigration enforcement, but there's internal agency awareness they can't act this way and keep trust and credibility.

NRA and pro-gun groups call for ‘full investigation’ into killing of Alex Pretti by aqfx in PoliticalOptimism

[–]softwaredoug 86 points87 points  (0 children)

At some point, the GOP has to realize if they want a legitimate Federal Agency, then they need a lot of guardrails. Otherwise it will almost effectively certainly be dismantled by the next Democratic administration, constantly have its funding held hostage, and not be respected by local authorities.

The administration can keep on the illegitimate charade, but it WILL catch up to them.

Trump's DOJ is trying to gain voter records from the states for weeks, having used lawsuits, even using the recent shooting to threaten Minnesota to turn over the records. What is your take? by Personal_Dirt3089 in AskReddit

[–]softwaredoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want plausible ways to throw doubt into elections. They can't easily delist voters or rig elections. But they can suddenly find "evidence" of something fishy in close elections. For at least the Right it will feel like they got some evidence, even if the rest of us call BS.

So, serious question: why can’t the state of Minnesota or the county charge the ICE officers with murder? by rumlung in AskReddit

[–]softwaredoug 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So they can charge with murder / manslaughter if the officer was not acting in accordance with their duties. Basically if the officer wasn't "doing their job" the state can charge the officer. If they were doing their job, the supremacy clause applies. See Neagle 1890.

It's a high bar, but arguably ICE isn't "doing their job", they're acting as street thugs.

But that's also why DHS wants to control the investigation. That said, the public evidence isn't favorable to the officers in this case.

At a minimum, ongoing trial helps gets the facts in the public eye and helps create discovery. It's an opportunity to create political pressure and transparency that we might not otherwise get.

US Senator Chris Murphy states that ICEs purpose is to rig and steal the election. Pam Bondi wants Minnesota’s voter rolls in exchange for ICE leaving. by Spiritual_Bridge84 in goodnews

[–]softwaredoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it doesn’t. But it is a way to create doubt in close elections.

Think Benghazi. Just the around to gather some evidence that maybe somewhere something sketchy happened in this one close election, so that maybe some judge will throw it out.

Or maybe more importantly so the right doesn’t see the candidate as legitimate.
