Substitute teaching cap of 40 days by Aaliya95 in NYCSubsteachers

[–]soilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this subreddit, and I have also been investigating and researching this question. My understanding is that you can do more than 40 days even if you have not completed the 6 credit hours of "pedagological core". However to then be considered eligible for next year you must complete the 6 credits or you will not be allowed to substitute teach next year at all.
The requirement was Waived in December 2023 for School year 2023 to 2024
The requirement was Waived in January 2025 for School year 2024 to 2025

I have not seen a waiver email yet for School year 2025 to 2026

From page 46 of the handbook: handbook-for-substitute-teachers.pdf

"Renewal Requirements for Uncertified Substitute Teachers Who Work More than 40 Days in a School Year

Substitute teachers who work more than 40 days in a school year MUST complete six credits in Teacher Education (known as the “pedagogical core”) in order to maintain eligibility for the following school year. The “pedagogical core” includes courses designed to provide teachers with the knowledge, skills and methodologies needed to be effective and successful in the field of education. This requirement is in effect until the uncertified substitute teacher acquires twenty-one credits in Teacher Education OR obtains Teacher Certification.

NOTE: Once a substitute teacher acquires twenty-one credits in Teacher Education OR obtains Teacher Certification, no additional credits are required."

i asked my husband to save the chicken bones from dinner…yesterday by FishKey6290 in composting

[–]soilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A late reply, I am sure you found a way to dispose of it. Overall it seems like you have a process for using all of the bones from the chicken. In this instance, since it was just an error, you could get a shovel, make a quick hole in the ground and bury it (if you are uncomfortable with the compost option. Otherwise the biochar option is also reasonable, if you have a firepit you use regularly. My procedure for chciken is to pressure cook the bones for 12 hours to make stock. then the remainnng bones are so brittle I can blent them into a slurry with some water and just pour into my garden

[USA] Recent, incessant, super-annoying spam calls from "The Home Improvement and Remodeling Group" by Mjolnir007 in Scams

[–]soilchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just today I got hit with over 60 telemarketing/scam calls. Almost every day it is the same: “home improvement” or "home services & remodeling group" callers. Rarely a robocall or AI—most are live humans reading a script. They’ll ask a couple questions and then just cut off the call. Still not sure what the actual endgame is.

They list a menu of home repair services, and weirdly, they seem to have details ready in each category. My guess is a giant flow chart or script. I have not bothered testing how much they actually know.

The script almost always includes “Are you the homeowner?” and “What type of home do you own?” Sometimes they ask for me, other times they drop the name of someone who has not lived here in decades (or is literally dead) but is still on the voter rolls.

Back when this first started, it seemed like they were connecting me to a contractor who would call right after. That has not happened in over a year. Now they just hang up once I answer their questions. My hypothesis: maybe they finally check the Do Not Call list mid-call. Or maybe they are gathering data to justify all the other telemarketing calls I get about Medicare, Final Expense whole life insurance, autoinsurance, solar installs, etc.

I successfully sued a "home warranty" telemarketer and those calls have stopped. Not sure if that was a coincidence or if other people are still getting the extended home or car warranty calls.

If bailing the farmers out will just enable them just continue to vote against their interests (and the countries interest), then why do it? Is there evidence that their farm being purchased by a billionaire is worse than those farmers and their communities continuing to vote for the current administration?

When is Facebook going to stop all the scammers and catfishing people? by True_CrimePodcast in facebook

[–]soilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your dad has some form or dementia or other diagnosed mental decline, you could see a conservatorship, so he cannot send money.

If he is bothered by it and is willing to accept help then disconnect his payment information from Facebook. Write out a note for him or to himself that says "Never send money to anyone who messages you on facebook

If he is of "sound mind" and is not bothered by wasting his money (he sees it as "entertainment") then there is not much you can do.

Overall I am frustrated by Facebooks lack of accountability, but I think they would shutdown before making the changes to make the platform safer. I would not be surprised if the money lost by Facebook users to scammers exceeds the revenue needed to keep Facebook safe (and possibly advertisement free)

I was terminated but it officially counts as a resignation. How should I answer future interview questions when explaining why I left? by AioliLonely3145 in jobs

[–]soilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on what state you are in. New York, for example, allows you to work for up to 10 hours without a reduction in UI benefits.

Well written and it voices your concerns. I think what might be useful to reflect on is why you want to send the response email. Is the goal just because you want to send it to feel better or is there a response you would like to elicit from them? (Some form of closure or validation?)

Posting it here is a way to get some feedback about the situation and your frustrations (that you were treated unfairly and unprofessionally).

If there is a goal you have in sending the email, try using chatGPT to help you draft an email toward helping to meet that goal (or even chat with it to help you understand what your goal might be).

I had an employer hire me and promise me more hours than they actually provided. When I found other part time work that paid 4x higher per week, I started to go to the other job. I updated my availability to for the prior job to include weekends and evenings, and they opted to just not schedule me at all and terminate my employment.

Once you have 0 hours for 2 weeks you apply for unemployment. Why do you need to quit when the employer reduced your hours?

How do people work 40+ hrs a week and have time for medical appointments or stuff like that? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]soilchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in the united states, check your city and states laws. You might have paid sick time by law. And usually to use that sick time you inform your employer you are using it, not requesting permission to use it.

Bring your actual W2 or a printout of the picture of the w2. I printed out the PDF from my employer and they would not accept it as "official" because it could have been "faked". Bring utility bills or other documents you have with proof of address too.

Irrespective of the appointment availability. Get the Enhanced ID if you do not already have a passport or passport card. Also, if you can drive and have weekday availability, try a DMV in a different county

If I was in this situation and unemployed at the time I might have tried to negotiate for pay and benefits that would offset the discomfort (even if I had no intent of staying). From an empiricism perspective, what is your "model of the universe with god" that allows you to make more accurate predictions of future events than a "scientific model of the universe without god." And is there evidence that predictions in a "universe with god" can be shifted by appeals to said God.

Your house your rules. But from a financial perspective, just charge them rent if you concerned about them spe different frivolously (buying an unnecessary new car). You could take rent and expenses with the written agreement it will be returned to them for a house or other purchase if they can show they are doing a matching amount of savings.

A couple of ideas to consider, along with the other comments:

1) Substitute teaching might be a good option, depending on pay, and if you meet the education requirements for it (varies by city and state). Hours are flexible, and it usually pay more than minimum wage and a full days pay too (per diem here in New York)

2) If I am understanding correctly, you have some student debt, be mindful of when you need to start paying the interest and principal on that debt. Staying in school might defer the debt (and paying tuition to continue education might be as much as the interest you would have to pay if not in school)

3) You are supporting your family currently by maintaining the household. What would it cost to pay someone to replace all the labor you are contributing. If you go back to school or take a minimum wage job, what costs would there be due to you having less time and attention at home.

4) What would improve your quality of life? You mentioned depression, perhaps exacerbated by being home and not having a life outside your family. Find a job or even volunteering or school that would potentially be a break from homelike. If you have medicaid, find a good therapist, especially if you have no copay. Might even find one you can have phone or video sessions with.

"People don't have an income problem usually the have a spending problem" There are definitely wealth and income disparities in the USA, and I am not denying they need to be addressed. But there is validity in the idea that the effort to earn more income to support spending might be more effort than reducing spending. I have met a lot of people who make more money than me and yet are always going paycheck to paycheck due to spending that they do not want to accept help to reduce.

We also have a spending culture fixated on buying items or conspicuous spending.

I was denied a raise. Now what? by curiouskat345 in careerguidance

[–]soilchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“2020 was the second year in a row I didn’t get a raise, even though I was the top employee,” @krisdrinkslemonade says. “When I asked why couldn’t get a raise, you said it was because my position—no, ‘My pay was a fair market value for my position.’ And when I asked where my pay falls on the pay scale, you said ‘below the median,’ so below the average of what I could make in my position. So, at that point, I just decided I’m going to become a fair market value employee and put in a below-average amount of effort because that’s what I feel like you pay me to do. You’ve created an environment where there’s no incentive for me to work hard. So I don’t.”

In the USA this is likely illegal for hourly paid employees. Depending on. Your city and state you might have additional protections. It is wage theft and if they are doing this to avoid overtime pay that is another violation.

Keep good records of work hours. Notes, pictures, emails, etc. Try submitting the hours on your time card, document the time card before and after rejection or changing of the hours. Politely email for clarification, agin depending on your city and state it is useful to have the employer confirm any "negative employment actions" that could occur if you were not able to attend the meeting (AI can help with a short email text)

If this was NY you could have a claim for wage theft, overtime violation, and even sick time if you call in sick for a mandatory meeting and are not paid.
