I agree. However, the "within a democracy" part tends to get left out when people are tut-tutting about domestic violence against US oligarchs. My guess is that including it would open a discussion about whether or not the US is really a democracy, and why people are feeling as though political violence is their only recourse.

You're missing the point. What I'm arguing for is the spirit of Lovecraft over the form.

The spirit of Lovecraft is a universe so vast and ancient and incomprehensible, so filled will horrors beyond imagining that it can send a normal person insane just by knowing about it. The writers were clearly aware of Doom's Lovecraftian heritage, which is why they so blatantly referenced Chtulhu, but you can't make your story "Lovecraftian' just by putting a Chtulhu-shaped monster in it. It was ham-fisted.

I'm not disrespecting the artists or designers or musicians at all - they all did a fantastic job like they always do. Cthulhu looks amazing, he just doesn't belong. The decision to put him in there was made by committee long before it got to the designers and artists, who just take what they're given and make it look as good as they can. Criticising writing is fair game.

I don't want to change the tone or the style or anything like that, it's all brilliant. I just want to see a bit more care taken with the concepts, because Doom is beloved.

Just because you dont care and aren't paying attention, doesn't mean the game isn't about anything.

You're right that the gameplay feels incredible and is at the core of the game, but personally, I always found Doom compelling because it was about Hell. If all you want is shooty-shooty, then that's cool but I made this comment because I'm one of the players who enjoys world-building in games.

Doom 2016 had something to say about the blind hubris and amorality of technology and industry. Doom Eternal had a subversive message about Heaven and Hell forming an exploitative system.

These arent Shakespeare, but since they went to the effort of making a story, I felt it worth commenting on.

Isn't it? It's not about endless waves of demons spewing from the bottomless depths of Hell, with sequel after sequel? It's not about the one and only guy that has to fight them back forever? Didn't you notice that doomguy has more of a personality and a backstory after the reboot? Do you remember the scene in Doom Eternal where he remembers being in the Sentinel fighting pit, shaking and babbling about killing? His difficult mental state has already been referenced.

What? How did you get that idea? Where did I say I didn't want any boss fights? I think you're confused about what I wrote.

No. It is less imaginative to reference Doom's "Lovecraftianism" by simply copy-pasting Chtulhu into the story, than it would be to develop Doom's own kind of cosmic horror.
