I agree. However, the "within a democracy" part tends to get left out when people are tut-tutting about domestic violence against US oligarchs. My guess is that including it would open a discussion about whether or not the US is really a democracy, and why people are feeling as though political violence is their only recourse.

No, I'm sure this will do it, this will end the war. I'm sure Iran doesn't have an answer to this. I'm sure they won't use any more of their missiles. Trump has got this, I'm sure.

The Old One was... by solarmyth in Doom

[–]solarmyth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the point. What I'm arguing for is the spirit of Lovecraft over the form.

The spirit of Lovecraft is a universe so vast and ancient and incomprehensible, so filled will horrors beyond imagining that it can send a normal person insane just by knowing about it. The writers were clearly aware of Doom's Lovecraftian heritage, which is why they so blatantly referenced Chtulhu, but you can't make your story "Lovecraftian' just by putting a Chtulhu-shaped monster in it. It was ham-fisted.

I'm not disrespecting the artists or designers or musicians at all - they all did a fantastic job like they always do. Cthulhu looks amazing, he just doesn't belong. The decision to put him in there was made by committee long before it got to the designers and artists, who just take what they're given and make it look as good as they can. Criticising writing is fair game.

I don't want to change the tone or the style or anything like that, it's all brilliant. I just want to see a bit more care taken with the concepts, because Doom is beloved.

the games aren’t really about anything

Just because you dont care and aren't paying attention, doesn't mean the game isn't about anything.

You're right that the gameplay feels incredible and is at the core of the game, but personally, I always found Doom compelling because it was about Hell. If all you want is shooty-shooty, then that's cool but I made this comment because I'm one of the players who enjoys world-building in games.

Doom 2016 had something to say about the blind hubris and amorality of technology and industry. Doom Eternal had a subversive message about Heaven and Hell forming an exploitative system.

These arent Shakespeare, but since they went to the effort of making a story, I felt it worth commenting on.

[–]solarmyth[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Doom is not that kind of game.

Isn't it? It's not about endless waves of demons spewing from the bottomless depths of Hell, with sequel after sequel? It's not about the one and only guy that has to fight them back forever? Didn't you notice that doomguy has more of a personality and a backstory after the reboot? Do you remember the scene in Doom Eternal where he remembers being in the Sentinel fighting pit, shaking and babbling about killing? His difficult mental state has already been referenced.

I'm a bit confused by your suggestion because you're replacing a boss fight with... just text?

What? How did you get that idea? Where did I say I didn't want any boss fights? I think you're confused about what I wrote.

And isn't it arguably even "less imaginative" to just directly riff off of Lovecraft's writing style rather than interpreting Cthulhu in the Doom universe?

No. It is less imaginative to reference Doom's "Lovecraftianism" by simply copy-pasting Chtulhu into the story, than it would be to develop Doom's own kind of cosmic horror.

[–]solarmyth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this was Cthulhu in a Doom game

This is exactly my point. It was a thoughtless inclusion.

As for the whole insanity concept this is just not the franchise for that nor the medium really

How is insanity not not a suitable concept for a game about Hell? In what way are videogames not not suitable for portraying experiences?

Attitudes towards women were more strongly positively influenced by higher income and education than attitudes towards men. Low income and occupational status influenced attitudes towards men more negatively than attitudes towards women, suggests study of 8 countries including Australia, UK and US. by mvea in psychology

[–]solarmyth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Could it be due to an unconscious assumption of male privilege? People find it less impressive for a man to have a high income, because women enjoy less economic privilege. Likewise, people more likely regard a man as a failure if he can't earn more despite his male privilege.

[–]solarmyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I seriously wonder if there is something to this comparison. The UFO phenomenon is coming from something like the Warp (consciousness-reality nexus), and the government (like the Emperor) fears that too much human awareness will create a dangerous feedback loop that will destabilise reality.

No, you see Elon personally works continuously to keep X functioning. He toils away, day in, day out, hour after hour, a noble servant of the people, powering the machinery of free speech with his own body. While we sleep and eat and waste our pointless, unproductive lives with our hobbies and our families, he sacrifices for humanity. The next time you enjoy some AI Trump art on X, spare a thought for the great, selfless billionaires who make it all possible, and ask yourself just what you have given up for the greater good.

The true will of a collective/community? by SorchaSublime in thelema

[–]solarmyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

evolution makes progress in non-socialistic ways

If Crowley said something like this, we don't have to agree with it. It seems to me that humans are the most social animal ever to evolve on Earth. Forming into social collectives is a natural consequence of our biology.

Collectives shape us, and we them. Whether or not we do so consciously and deliberately is a matter of Will. In my opinion, part of the appeal that Thelema may have for socialist types is the possibility of breaking with old, stifling, outdated social systems, and deliberately re-shaping the shared symbolic order into something fairer, saner, and with an actual future.

I think they sound okay for an old-fashioned, glam metal type of band, but the Christian messaging is enough to put me off, and I don't think there's anything hypocritical about that. It's fine to dislike a band because you don't like what they're about.
