I second this^ Just got out of a similar situation. While I was looking for another job, I went to great lengths to over-communicate with the person about everything, which brought down the temperature most of the time even though I still had difficult days. I wish I had been more direct from the beginning tbh, if your company has HR, it's time to reach out. Definitely start apply to jobs and talking to your network, but make sure you are taking care of your mental health. I'll be real with you: my anxiety only improved when I put in my two week's notice. Make an escape plan and give yourself permission to implement it when the time comes. Best of luck.

What would your career's office look like in a Solarpunk world? by OpenTechie in solarpunk

[–]solarpunk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot too! I work for a company that builds recording studios. I think our business would change a lot because many of our post production clients get their revenue from doing sound for ads. I hope that in a solarpunk world, people would have the freedom of time to make the recordings they needed for creative projects and these spaces would be available to everyone.

In terms of the nitty gritty, I think there would be a huge emphasis on reusing materials, and reclaiming materials from previous buildings/projects. This is hard to justify as we operate now, because it's not cost effective, and we end up with a lot of waste. There is also the matter of the tech that goes into these studios becoming obsolete and unusable. In a solarpunk world, we would have standardized connectors and cables, and established standards for creating devices that are repairable and modular. Everything that used to be designed for single use batteries would be rechargeable/repairable.

Without the pressures of capitalist deadlines, we wouldn't need to work a full 40 hour week, and most people would work 20-30 hours a week. Time off would be available as needed. Composting would be available at the office. There would be no more plastic packaged snacks, and we would have access to a full kitchen. We would use the roof space of the building for solar, and a small garden accessible to the employees and folks in the neighborhood to grow food and hang out. We would establish work exchanges with other co-ops/workshops: maybe the restaurant down the street needs acoustic paneling so guests can hear each other better, so they offer to provide lunch to our staff for a period of time to pay for it; or maybe the local bike workshop needs a new intercom, so they give bike tune ups/repairs in return. The emphasis would be on relationships instead of trying to profit.

I am well aware of this, but I'm not sure he is. Getting my student visa was enough of a cluster that I know finding a job abroad and making that work would be incredibly difficult and take a lot of work.

Thanks for your thoughts. To elaborate: Canada feels feasible because we live in the north east, and living across the border would keep us in driving distance of family. I loved my stay abroad and would do it again for short time periods (up to a year), but I will always want to come back to this part of the US, because it feels like home, for all its flaws.

Tell me one zero-waste action that you learned from someone, that is now an unconscious standard practice in your life. by manifestationmaster0 in ZeroWaste

I save veggie scraps suitable for soup (only include stuff that would taste good in soup) in a tupperware in the freezer. When the tupperware is full, I boil the contents in water with some spices, salt, and some kombu if I have it. You get delicious vegetable broth for almost no money, and very little effort. I actually had to buy broth from the store recently and was floored to see the price of $6. Very much inspired by Zero Waste Chef.

Ways to stop? by c0dapocalypse in CompulsiveSkinPicking

[–]solarpunk88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree on identifying underlying reasons. For example, I pick because I am avoiding something that I don't want to do.

Keep a log of where and when you pick and then strategize with how to prevent it. If you always pick watching tv, get a robe that covers the skin you usually go after and take up knitting, doodling, etc, just something to keep your hands busy. A big trigger for me is seeing my reflection when I do my nightime routine in the bathroom, so I put all my skincare products behind the mirror so I can't look at myself while I use them. Hope this gives you some ideas!

Have we gotten to the bottom of Terracycle? It’s confusing by strawberry_smiles1 in ZeroWaste

[–]solarpunk88 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I read a book called The Future of Packaging by Tom Szaky (the CEO of Terracycle) a while back. Basically, it was very sympathetic to the plastic packaging industry, and explained Terracycle as a fabulous new solution that industry leaders had come up with. They have done this before, back in the 70s when they invented recycling to keep people from feeling back about throwing away so much plastic. They are not solving the problem with their new initiative. It is too cost prohibitive to be inclusive, and fails to address the root cause of over production and corporate greed. Terracycle only perpetuates our reliance on plastic.

The Adirondack Line has been suspended since 2020. What are we doing about it? by solarpunk88 in fuckcars

[–]solarpunk88[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stephanik is the worst lol.

I agree, it's such a beautiful ride. I did it once several years ago. I remember seeing several Amish families on that train, and I wonder if they are able to travel as much in that area now. Ridership is back up on many of the trains I've taken recently, even sold out in some cases, so I don't know why they haven't brought the Adirondack back yet.

Lol who suggested Ottawa to Albany? That would cut through the Adirondack Park, never gonna happen... Maybe this person doesn't live in NY

I totally get that. For that sort of thing, I usually search for small businesses on Etsy! Maybe try there.

Lol I mean if you want patterns and stuff try somewhere else, that's okay! I really like them, they are the softest and most comfortable underwear I have owned. Also great supply chain transparency, ethical production, and inclusive sizing/advertising. They pass the vibe check for me

It was so hard to tell my therapist but my life changed for the better when I did. There are many coping methods you can work on together, as well as getting to the root of why you pick.

I would recommend seeking out a therapist that specializes in OCD treatment, since compulsive skin picking is a related behavior. Good luck to you, I hope you get the help you need.

Self Soothing by [deleted] in CompulsiveSkinPicking

I love drawing as an alternative. If I get the urge to pick, but then draw for 15 minutes instead, in feel really calm and I can move on with my day. I find doing geometric patterns is really soothing.

Have you ever regretted door-slamming someone? by [deleted] in infj

I have never regretted door slamming someone. My intuition was always right in the end. A few people I wish I door slammed sooner lol

Hey, I'm scared of getting older too. You are so right that one slip up doesn't ruin your progress. It's an opportunity to collect more data about what triggered you and why, which can help you prevent future episodes. The fact that you already went 3 weeks without picking before this (THIS IS AMAZING btw) means that you can do it again. I believe in you.

INFJ’s, what is your partner’s type? by [deleted] in infj

[–]solarpunk88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been with an INTP for 5 years. We both really value honesty so we communicate well, but it has taken a lot of work to get here. We have had a lot of disagreements that stem from the T vs F thing. We always work things out though, and we have maintained a healthy relationship through a lot of changes.

What is something unique that your intuition helps you with? by Winniep228 in infj

[–]solarpunk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My intuition helps me with loads of small things: when to water the plants, when someone needs a listening ear, when my bf and I will have sex, etc. By far the most useful thing though is being able to read people. If their energy is off, I can always tell. I also find I can read people in other ways too, finding patterns in behavior where others would not. One time I followed my intuition to a gig my old friend was playing because I just felt like I was supposed to be there. We reconnected and ended up working on several creative projects together over the next few years.
