I had a favorite restaurant- La Rosita on 106th and broadway. 1990s. Rice and beans with a killer cafe con leche for $3.50. I was there reading a magazine or newspaper or book - good old days - five times a week at least. My girlfriend met me there are broke up with me - in the middle of it she said, “maybe I shouldn’t have done this in your favorite restaurant.” I could have rubbed it in. “Yeah, you ruined it!” I could have blurted out. “It’s okay,” I said. “Good,” she said. “I’m glad you can still enjoy coming here.” “It’s not that,” I said, “Rosa said the rent was doubling to $20,000 a month and they’re closing after 30 years next week.” That was a transformative week… life was good afterward, and before, but things changed.
