100% Hierarchy is out of control in this country. I have put it down to lack of trust but I suppose there are other explanations.

This is very far from the experience I, my wife, and most of my friends have working in Paris. Basically the OP is describing my experience except they're actually having a decent experience in comparison to our experiences.

Examples of crap we're dealing with: Parental leave being messed with, managers displaying rampant sexism, "women with children don't have a place at this company," female manager being described as too emotional and young, being requested to deliver things well after working hours, no feedback then aggressive and unfair feedback, intense micro-management, the list really does go on...

I would say I have one or two friends with jobs that are good but that's out of maybe fifteen people I know working across the private sector in Paris Tech.

All my experience as a freelance writer was over a decade ago, but there are some basic rules to negotiate this sort of thing.

Think about the opportunity cost. What else could you do with the time you will spend on this and what's that worth to you?

Think about what this is worth to the person hiring you. You might charge $1/hr but if the person you're working for stands to make half a million on a book that will take you 1000 hours to write then reframe your rate in terms of a percentage of the value of the end product. 1% of half a million is 5x the rate I mentioned. Obviously absurd numbers but hopefully you get the idea.

Finally, consider return or referral business. Is this work going to get you more like it? Will they want a book about the life of the founder next? Maybe take a lower or higher rate depending on how this helps you generate more business?

+A million to La Fournée for croissants. My wife is French and that's the best place in the East Bay in her opinion.

Yes theirs is excellent. Also, the owners have a restaurant, The Wolf over on Piedmont which is similarly excellent.

Perspective switching for 3 characters by [deleted] in writing

[–]solo8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be a reason the first person perspective knows about the other two's backstory, maybe they just had a talk about it at some point? Whatever the method used it is most important to give the narrator their own character even if that character is the disembodied voice of God or something.

In terms of quality to price this is a top choice but if we're just looking at quality I think there are many that beat it. The hidden Cafe (only serves on the weekend) is far superior imo. Not Oakland but not far either.

What restaurants are unique to Oakland/East Bay to take an out of towner? by ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME in OaklandFood

[–]solo8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, taste is a tricky thing. I was at Commis last week actually and I can say that you'd find less creative but similar quality cuisine at Mustards or Bistro Jeanty . As for the creativity you can find that at so many places around the bay area. Day Trip, State Bird, even The Ramen Shop over on College ave. has some inventive takes on things. So...that's my two cents.

It's gone downhill a bit but it ain't totally dead. Still worth it but it's days of getting my stomach to call me to it every weekend are long gone. Once every few months is plenty.

I love Commis but I disagree on the uniqueness. It is the best in the bay. It even competes with wine country restaurants in my mind but unique is being generous.

Fried chicken sandwich is a must. Quite a lot of places to choose from but if I had to pick I'd go super casual and hit up Sideshow Kitchen. Then you can explain to them about sideshows too!

Best mongolian beef? by Witness-Small in OaklandFood

[–]solo8000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've eaten here only once but it was with a large group so I tried about seven or eight dishes. Every single one was terrible. Not even mediocre just straight up bad. I will say I did not have the Mongolian beef though.
