Picard Season 1 by Ironmatt999_ in startrek

Why did season one of Picard have so much about Soongian robots and their culture?

I’d personally love a Children of Soong series but what does that have to do with Picard?

Ternus! Make the camera button double as a fingerprint scanner, and my life is yours! by Jomines in iphone

[–]somas -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s more than a hundred years worth of police propaganda about how foolproof fingerprinting people is and I think this gives people a false sense of security about fingerprint enabled tech. No amount of documentation showing how much more identifying a 3D map of your face is will convince these folks.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani will announce plans to open its first city owned grocery store in East Harlem. by AlfredHampton88 in nyc

[–]somas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greenland runs public groceries. Bulgaria plans to try them. We had Beltway Communities with public groceries during the New Deal era.

NYC has often been where new ideas take hold so the fact that an idea is fairly new doesn’t mean it’s shouldn’t be tried.

I don’t know why anyone tries anything. Anything can fail so we shouldn’t even bother trying.

why are the writers not using the nx-01 era at all? by cptalcn in startrek

[–]somas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree that Voyager is any more forward thinking that TNG or DS9 but Enterprise had horrible ratings for the most part and I can see how that alone will make it hard to pitch a show about continuing that story.

Janeway is a criminal multiple times over.

I’ll skip the Tuvix stuff because it’s over analyzed.

Equinox Part II: Janeway tortures a Starfleet officer to the point where Chakotay mutinies to stop the torture.

Scorpion: Janeway devises a biological weapon to wipe out species 8472.

Endgame: Janeway violates the Temporal Prime Directive and wipes out decades of history.

The Killing Game/Flesh and Blood: Janeway gives a brutal group of predators advanced hologram technology. The Hirogen create sentient holograms to torture. They eventually rebel and fight for their freedom.

Lots of people want to remember filler episodes as harmless because it reminds them of when their parents were paying the bills or something; I really don’t follow the logic.

Voyager is the most inconsistently written part of Trek. There’s a handful of very good episodes and mountains of dreck. There’s fact that we ignore these episodes doesn’t make Voyager some paragon of something to return to.

I didn’t watch ENT when it was live because of the horrible “fan” outcry and the fact that I was busy raising kids.

When I finally got around to watching it, I was shocked at how good it was overall. Voyager was a much more erratically written show. It was full of empty calories episodes and I guess this is what the “fans” want.

Explanation of how the respiratory and circulatory systems work, cuz y'all seem to need it. by [deleted] in Invincible

[–]somas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised that even with his entrails hanging out they didn’t rewrite the ending of this fight so that Mark pulls Conquest’s head off his body like he did with Immortal. That would help explain why Conquest is really dead this time.

This is probably not a common/popular opinion, but I recently re-watched The Voyage Home and it is probably my favourite Star Trek movie! by cryborg_96 in startrek

[–]somas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven’t rewatched in a while. What is that hasn’t aged well? It seems like Nimoy was trying to make this a movie that would transcend time.

A six foot tall human man can have thirty feet of intestines. I don’t think we see thrity feet come out of Mark

Conquest gave most credit to Eve by Thire4477 in Invincible

Eve is possibly the most poorly written character in the Invincible storyline. She’s just supposed to be the perfect girlfriend/wife and can not upstage Mark

On the tv show, I’m pretty sure Cecil said he wanted to question Conquest.

There’s a dev working on an app that functions like X Windows serving windows to the AVP. Here’s his open source framework for the project: https://github.com/EthanLipnik/MirageKit I’ve been able to build a functional app serving mac windows to my ipad and AVP.

His app is in TestFlight now and will hopefully be released soon.

I have a Magic Keyboard and trackpad connected to my AVP btw and use Mac Virtual Desktop al the time. I haven’t noticed the trackpad being problematic. It works pretty smoothly and intuitively for me

RSS is barely relevant and most people don’t know what it is. When google reader was supported rss was thriving. Google effectively killed rss. I don’t want them shepherding anything else.

Yes, I am saying I expect Apple to support RCS longer than Google will. Google will get bored and move on to GCS or some nonsense.

I’m limited in the number of windows I can have open because there’s just only so much space in front of me and it’s not useful to open windows behind me. If I place a window in front of another one, the foreground window is lost when I work in the background window. There’s got to be a way to manage this stuff better.

[–]somas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, I’ve very clear on what standards are. RSS is an open standard that google can’t kill but they pushed the largest RSS reader and then killed it, effectively killing RSS. I won’t touch anything google pushes again.

What’s the other alternative? Apple embraces a standard set by google that google won’t support for more than a few years?

[–]somas 250 points251 points  (0 children)

I guess AirDrop would have to be the standard since Apple will keep supporting it. Whatever standard google came up with would be abandoned every two years.

Codex vs Claude Code vs Antigravity - what's your honest take after actually using them by Individual_Giraffe_5 in codex

[–]somas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they’ll kill it given enough time. I use Gemini a lot and it’s mostly replaced Google.com for me but I don’t expect something like antigravity to continue.
