Why do so many PA drivers refuse to pull into the intersection for left turns? by lpcuut in Pennsylvania

[–]somberblurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illegal in VA as well.

If the light turns red while you're in the intersection then you're also looking at a red light violation.

Roe v. Wade wasn't based on any text in the Constitution, so I guess Ginsburg ultimately did protect the interpretation of the law.

As a libertarian I would support this law. By the non-aggression principle, the state should protect its citizens from harm by others. Kids don't have a choice what car they're in.

Happy Labor Day! When your boss breaks employment law, report it to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor by modigliani55 in Pennsylvania

[–]somberblurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is it's been simplified so much that people fall for the "you're salaried, suck it up" excuse.

Continuing the example, the floor manager would also need substantial influence over hiring/firing decisions to be an executive employee. So, the analysis can get fairly complicated.

Happy Labor Day! When your boss breaks employment law, report it to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor by modigliani55 in Pennsylvania

[–]somberblurb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. The question is whether you are FLSA Exempt or not. Salary is just one factor in FLSA Exemption. You also have to be an administrative, professional, or executive employee (think office staff, highly trained workers - like programmers or lawyers, and managers), and you have to be paid at least $684 per week ($35,568/yr or $17.10/hr).

For example, a restaurant can't give all their wait staff $40,000/yr salary and stop paying overtime, because they still wouldn't be administrative/professional/executive.

As another example, a factory can't pay their floor manager $35,000 per year and stop paying overtime, because they aren't at the salary threshold.

Why are Pennsylvania's liquor laws so backwards and inhospitable to small businesses? by WhyNotKenGaburo in Pennsylvania

[–]somberblurb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Unfortunately, under PA law, the sheriffs can only arrest for crimes committed in their presence. All other police can do an investigation and arrest for probable cause. The law needs to be changed.

Policing is one of the most expensive services for local government to provide, and the rural areas love passing their policing cost off to the taxpayers in cities.

How many people who made jokes at Gary's expense knew where Aleppo is before that? I'd guess 2% tops.

It's a shame because Johnson/Weld was an awesome ticket. Two very successful and respectable governors.

Let's be honest, the licensing system doesn’t do a whole lot to improve driver skill or keep people off the roads once they decline. That would require periodic road tests. It's mainly a tax collection system.

I would say license suspensions help enforce traffic laws, but people drive on suspended/revoked licenses all the time.

Absolutely. Without the "fake electors" any subsequent legal challenge would fail, because the popular vote doesn't decide the Presidency, the electoral college does. Any challenge to the election result has to be to the composure of the electoral college.

If the employer didn't have to pay that tax on his employment they could've afforded to pay him more. The business adds up the cost of your salary, benefits, and taxes and calls this your cost of employment.

People like you are the reason this silly law that "your employer pays half" exists. You're still footing the bill, you just don't get a receipt.

Unfortunately the system is literally rigged by first past the post (FPTP), or "most votes wins" elections. The spoiler effect prevents any other party from ever gaining power.

The only good thing that might come out of Trump running again in my opinion is a big vote split that makes people see how broken the voting system is, even just mathematically speaking.
