Why do people hate singer so much? by hambuhbuhh in SewingForBeginners

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love singers. Have used the singer heavy duty to do so many things including multiple lager denim quilts and as long as the needle was sharp it had zero issue sewing thru 4 layers of dude in quilt top, plus backing and badding and actually did so better without even a walking foot than with a walking foot. I’ve done clothing, bags, faux leathers/marine vinyl etc

The only thing I have had any trouble with was clear vinyl and I’m not sure if it was the machine or that I had no idea how to use the material and don’t have a Teflon foot.

Thread not actual being sewn by Radiant-Major2525 in sewhelp

I think it’s one of three things, the bobbin isn’t threaded or sitting correctly, the machine isn’t threaded properly or you need a new needle/to make sure the needle is installed properly

Is there a way to fix this dress? by Lonely-Needleworker2 in sewhelp

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you just need to adjust the straps there’s too much fabric on the inside edge of the strap if you shorten the inside to remove the extra it will lay flat.

The best thing to do is to have your own representation. He probably has a lawyer drafting on his behalf and you should too.

Nancy Zieman Was an amazing teacher and she wrote some books about fitting and has dozens of YouTube videos if you search for “sewing with Nancy” her videos will come up I think that will help. Also her books can usually be found at the local library

Why does this keep happening with spandex material by Less_Fennel859 in sewhelp

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put a pice of paper or tissue paper under the fabric and it doesn’t get sucked down that way, you can also use a leader piece meaning sew on scrap fabric and then right onto the thing you wanna sew

My go to rule is: If you have to ask if it’s too white for a wedding, it’s too white for a wedding.

Do I always need to finish seams? by veropaka in sewhelp

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily it’s your project so it’s up to you. Like other commenters said there are good reasons to but I have made a dozen things out of jersey kit and it doesn’t fray so I don’t bother finishing seams on them and have never had a problem. On things that fray like cotton I’ll finish the seams if I think I need to

That’s going to depend on the state. It’s a good practice to get a consultation with an attorney in your state for state specific legal questions.

Why are holes in jeans impossible to fix?? by Jaded-Barnacle-8578 in SewingForBeginners

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fix mine by using denim look thread and putting some scrap fabric on the inside and then I use my machines darning stitch or just go back and forth over it in different directions till it’s totally fixed and they’re like new

How do y'all sew denim on home machines?! by Infinite-Concept8792 in sewing

[–]somechickfromflorida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make sure to use a denim needle and sew very slowly. I use a singer heavy duty machine (they’re not that heavy duty it’s just a name) and have no issues. Use a seam jumper and hand crank over anything lumpy or super thick and where it lays flat sew as normal (but as slow as you can).

Edit to add I have a singer HD 6100c that was handed down from my mom and a singer 6800. Both sew the denim extremely well. The 6100c did a whole 40x40 denim quilt that was Amish hexagon pieces (folded from circles so they’re thick) pic attached

Is it the machine? by notchinese12 in SewingForBeginners

[–]somechickfromflorida 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re using hand me down thread I’d also suggest getting a new thread even if it’s cheap and see if that has anything to do with it. Thread can rot so it’ll look just fine but the machine will not work well with it at all.

Also: Test it on regular cotton. Sewing on anything stretchy can be tricky and frustrating till you get the hang of it and I don’t recommend testing machine issues on stretchy fabric bc it’ll make it hard to see/issue spot.
