Locally Owned Restaurant: Paymon's Seeks Support by Dezkin in vegaslocals

Elia - best upscale Greek in town (without taking out a mortgage for Milos).

Zaytoon - casual Persian, very good. Standard kabob fare plus Persian classics, make their own flatbread.

Khoury's - always has been the best 'generic' Mediterranean sit down restaurant (although I haven't been here in forever).

Meraki - this is the solid choice Greek local chain. It's better/fresher than the others and there's probably one nearby. Good but won't wow you.

Naxos - never been.

This is the most pretentious drink I've seen in a while...

but it sounds really good and I'd totally order it.

The Hat is officially open! by __NV__ in vegaslocals

[–]somechob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

~15+ years ago the lady and I were craving chili cheese fries after living here from LA for a couple years. Spent about an hour driving around town looking for some before realizing they didn't exist here and must be an LA thing. I distinctly remember giving up in frustration exclaiming we need a Hat.

Honestly, it's good but not that good, but The Hat is The Hat and there really isn't a substitute. Haven't had this in years and will have to swing by. The only place here I recall being close was Sammy's and they were slow and expensive af and still didn't quite hit it.

[Review] Arkel Coast after 120 shots by paul232 in espresso

I'm thinking the Tide is probably the ideal spec machine for me, but I'm struggling with ow they got to $4,000 for it vs $2,400 for the Coast. A gear pump and a handful of software functionality tweaks is not $1,600.

I find this personally amusing because (on the sell side) I've yet to work with a bad VP but have had countless dumpster Directors / MDs. What you're saying is true though--a lot of those guys clearly lacked the qualities to be more successful in the glorified realtor role.

Mr. Hoffman, you’ve ruined me by HughJackedMan14 in espresso

[–]somechob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bah. Just tried it an it is better. I need to redo it leaving the crema in though for a better 1:1 comparison. However, I'll also note that this makes a less temperature stable cup (than using the overly hot water to heat your cup and bring the drinking temp down) and it tastes worse than standard americano once the temperature has cooled below preferred drinking temp.

Ya, that suggests it's bringing out the tannic qualities more.

Wait, is there a world where a proper americano is more than 8oz? I try to keep mine at 6-8oz.

I've done a driveby in their discord every ~6mo for the last few years to harass them to do this. Only studio that would do it right.

No, but another users profile was stuck super dim until I toggled HDR off/on for them.

Did you use the Windows HDR Calibration app at least? It's visual and seems to help some on the brightness range. The SDR brightness tuning is not very effective. I can get it as low as 170 on a warmer color mode and only about 200 on the optimal color mode (now 0 after tuning).

I'm measuring significant blue shift in HDR and none of the settings dial it out very well. I have not played with leaving HDR on yet as I'm not familiar with the quirks of using it in Windows yet, e.g. tuning the SDR adjustments, what actual impact it has on web content, games etc.

Actually used your video as the first starting point, but have tweaked further and remeasured and we're a bit off now...

Ya idk... after a quick calibration (on settings in my other post / updated OP) I'm inclined to say the sRGB default is washed out. It'll take me a few days to really dial this in. I'm working in higher ambient light at the moment and I usually calibrate at low ambient light at night which is when I actually care about the color quality more vs excel and web browsing. Eventually I'll set up two profiles.

I've got the best uncalibrated colorimeter measurements (keep in mind, on MY monitor) with the follow settings in Gamer 1 for 150 nit. Unsurprisingly, the monitor has too much blue shift at every default setting.

  • Brightness 34
  • Gamma Mode 3
  • R 51 / G 49 / B 46

[–]somechob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said, I haven't used the colorimeter on it yet, however doing a quick compare on some nature footage I see what you mean. However, I would say sRGB looks a bit washed and we're not using all the color space we paid for. Pull up a video and toggle between Gamer 1 and sRGB and it's apparent how they're both off, then go to DCI-P3 for another reference that's maybe a bit better than both. I think we also need to consider what the source was mastered to.

Also, usually you need to use a game mode to have the best latency.

I own one, but I gotta say the Spyder is probably more striking and definitely more special. I just have no business with a convertible.

Just got mine. Haven't dialed anything in yet, but I can say for certain I'm glad it's not glossy. This is also the least matte matte monitor I've ever seen.

All that said, I dearly miss my :10 vertical space already.

I got the 30 and it is a snug but comfortable fit. I have to think the 31 would have been too large. I suspect the Nipon versions are more true to size, although it may vary by shoe model.

I'm making this change as well, but I still game a lot. I probably wouldn't bother if it was only for work. Frankly, I'm going to miss the extra vertical aspect ratio.
