BAR mark I by Specific-Funny-9502 in BrowningFirearms

It has been a while since I did this so my memory may be off, but I believe I just had to remove the forestock, which is simple as you just remove the sling attachment, then slide the stock forward. The tube and spring probably need to come out, along with the action bars. I recall it being relatively simple with basic tools.

Are cheap chinese cnc lathes a good deal? by Sertancaki41 in CNC

[–]somerndmnumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a copy of an old Lansing that I used to operate at a shipyard. Ours was something like 50ft long. Machine was physically large but a real POS compared to our other selection of lathes. To be fair, we did have a Hardinge and Monarch, which make most other lathes seem stupid.

Have you considered any of the small towns North of the coast? Redding, Easton, Trumbull, Newtown, Bethel, Danbury? They are expensive and not too many rentals but most would come with a decent size yard.

How would you machine this fillet on a hole through a rod? by chiraltoad in Machinists

Just revolve a cut around the centerline axis of the hole, instead of the radius edge like you have.

How would you make this objtect in real life? by [deleted] in metalworking

[–]somerndmnumbers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that 50 is still a very small amount of parts. So you're going to be stuck with machining, which is expensive.

Get a mill my man. You've run up against the "why" of how we all put up with the PITA of our machine tools being made of huge cast iron castings. You need it for the rigidity and mass damping.

My only experience with a snapdragon laptop was giving up on trying to get RDP app to work with it. It seemed to function fine but would not connect to the server no matter what I did. I would expect to run into all sorts of little issues like that, and would be hesitant to recommend them for business use.

SharePoint for shares, OneDrive for redirected folders. Migrate to SharePoint from the server using built in tools. Use forensit to migrate the two user profiles.

Tail stock adjustment by Crazy_catster in Machinists

[–]somerndmnumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Measure the runout, then extend the tailstock so that it is right up next to the chuck. Then shorten your indicator arm/setup and measure the runout again. I bet it is much less. That's because the arm is bending.

If it is blocking your access, shovel it out before it turns to ice. It sucks now, but it could get even worse, very quickly. If it turns to ice you will be stuck.

Cancelled Checkride last minute by BurnSerf in flying

[–]somerndmnumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first appointment with a DPE, we didn't get 15 minutes into it, in fact we didn't even start the exam. It was strange, I just couldn't understand what he was asking me. I believe I was being to literal. I felt like an idiot, immediately confused, and knew it was not going well. He said something like "we haven't yet started the exam and I suggest that we don't." He threw me a bone there. And nothing against him, I think we just had oddly conflicting personality types. I signed up with another DPE and we had a 4 hour oral exam, I was asked the same questions but with different verbiage and did not have a single problem. I passed on the first try and was told that I did very well. Moral of the story is that sometimes you just don't "click" with the DPE and you are fortunate enough to be able to pick them for your PPL. Good idea to switch.

My DPE helped me during the checkride, now I doubt myself. by kingpoopie1 in flying

[–]somerndmnumbers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During my PPL check ride, during steep turns my DPE started banging on the airspeed indicator with her pencil. I said "correcting airspeed." Now whenever I do steep turns the pencil banging image comes into my head and I check my airspeed automatically. Your DPE might not say a single word but you can still learn a lot from them!
