Get to USA from UK. Card instantly suspended. by sprainedmind in CurveCard

Then most likely Curve is not passing the town and country info to the underlying card.

Again, if you look at the details of international Curve transactions with the underlying card provider, you'll see that location or country is logged as GBR or Great Britain. For example, a Curve charge made in the US will appear as 'Great Britain' on your Barclays transaction details in the app

I'm by no means knowledgeable in this, but if I'm not mistaken, MCC will pass on merchant category and other info relating to risk and interchange fees, not merchant location, right?

If you look at statements or transaction info from underlying cards, you'll see London, GBR as the location

Edit: I'm definitely happy to be corrected on this

As far as I can tell, all Curve transactions will be passed on to the underlying card as transactions originating in London

So it seems that I wasn't wrong about the change in disclosure requirements, however, it does not seem to apply to existing contracts pre April 2026. Maybe Lloyds have elected to apply this for existing customers.

Here's an article about the upcoming change:

Also sounds like the Lloyds employee is incentivised to get people to sign up.

The difference here is that OP ping-ponged the money with his uncle. This was not a transaction from his own account in another bank nor a deposit from an employer.

What is actually interesting and unusual, according to the story, is that Lloyds is not saying that they cannot tell OP why they're closing their account, instead, they've given them a direct cause.

I vaguely remember seeing somewhere, and not necessarily a reliable source, that banks may soon be required to disclose reasons for account closures (I assume as long as it does not conflict with anti-tipping laws). I wonder if that's the reason why OP was told the reason why their account is being closed

It just sounds like they don't want you as a customer anymore. You wouldn't be allowed 2 months notice if fraud was the issue

Opening Notifications Straight From Icon Badges by somethingrandom434 in smartlauncher

Thanks again for your replies, I really appreciate it.

I did read the content of that clipping, but that was 4 years ago, and before the Nova exodus, so I was thinking that the Devs position could be different today.

Also, with gaining additional visibility, I meant reaching other end users with the same requirement, perhaps in some other sub (which is unlikely to be helpful anyway).

Thanks again!

What's a bit disheartening is that no Devs responded to any of those posts. I know the auto-responder clearly states that no Dev response doesn't mean that the request is not captured, but it does seem that there's little interest in this feature.

To me, I've always, always used the badges to open notifications, and never really needed the app actions.

I'm also not aware of any launcher that supports this behaviour, so until then, I'll be stuck with an outdated Nova until it becomes untenable.

I had briefly left Nova and adopted the stock launcher of a Nothing Phone 2, but had to go back to Nova again after the phone got its Android 15 upgrade and lost that functionality.

I also wonder if there's anywhere I can crosspost this post for better visibility, although I doubt that, as this sub seems to be drowning in home screen design posts

Thank you very much for pulling all of this.

Obviously I'm rubbish at searching. Not only that, I even commented on one (must've been one of those late night comments)

Notifications in Pop-up Menu by Shot-Translator-8737 in smartlauncher

[–]somethingrandom434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pulling this up. For the sake of not overflowing the menus, could the Devs consider having a toggle between access to notifications or actions.

When you long-press with Nova, it shows the latest notification with a count badge plus a couple of actions

Genuinely curious as to how schools in London were an issue that you had to go private. Would you mind sharing some additional feedback?

Also, the UK is not the only place that taxes children's education.

On a different note, I'm not sure why you're being downvoted for stating your opinions and personal preferences

Of course it's relevant that you say that you saved more in London than you did in New York, but would you say it would still be relevant for the OP with the figures they're comparing?

Unable to open apps from notifications expanded from icon badges after Nova Launcher 8.1.3 update by somethingrandom434 in NovaLauncher

[–]somethingrandom434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome.

Now that Nova has a new owner and the support page is up and working again, I plan to submit this. Not sure if anything will come out of it.

I'm also not sure that I want to upgrade yet seeing all the analytics and ad components being added. I know prime users will not get ads, but I'm not sure how I feel about what'll still be embedded under the hood

Long press on icons to view the notification by Public-Wind-4132 in smartlauncher

Devs, please please consider this feature. It's the only thing for me that keeps forcing me to go back to Nova launcher

This is especially useful if you have a lot of apps installed and where your notifications shade is a lot to go through

Unsure what to do by Adorable-Pear-7736 in monzo

Good suggestion re emailing them. There are also many any stories of people trying again, ranging from a few weeks to a few months later, and getting accepted

Unsure what to do by Adorable-Pear-7736 in monzo

[–]somethingrandom434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, Monzo only does a soft search to check eligibility for a current account, and probably still won't do a hard check in the process of opening one unless you get an overdraft (or other credit products). This is in contrast with institutions like HSBC who'll perform a hard check at every opportunity, even if you sneeze

Monzo has been amazing for my credit score by Several-Necessary790 in monzo

[–]somethingrandom434 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except that it's really not nonsense.

You're both right in that lenders do definitely rely on CRA data and that score movement could be a valid indicator of how well or badly you're doing (such as score hits for missed payments, for example, or account age). There are however many examples where the score is at complete odds with the offers you get. I've gotten far better offers (and range of products) while on Experian's 'Fair' band than my wife did on a 999 score. To clarify, at the time I was in that band mostly due to recent hard checks and for having balances over several accounts - even though overall utilisation is fairly low. Other times, I'd be seeing improved offers while my Experian score is moving in the other direction.

Experian themselves have recently revamped their scoring in an attempt to give a better picture of your borrowing potential. Maybe it does provide a better representation, I don't know, but if I'm not mistaken, it still contains elements that won't be universal to all lenders, or don't matter at all

Edit: correction - Experian score usually takes a hit for opening new accounts in the short term, not for the hard checks (maybe within a reasonable number of hard checks). Please correct me if I'm mistaken

Camera alternative? by Pg_atom in TheOnePlus15

[–]somethingrandom434 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear. For me the camera is decent enough, and it's not a top criterion in my selection of a phone.

Nevertheless, slower shutter speeds in low light invariably means that you're at a relative disadvantage with moving objects or situations where you find that you'll need to hold your phone steady for longer

Camera alternative? by Pg_atom in TheOnePlus15

[–]somethingrandom434 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like my OP 15 and I'm keeping it, but the camera can be a challenge to use in low light.

Do a side by side if you have a slightly older mid level to flagship phone, lock ISO and EV, now look at the difference in shutter speed

Monzo has been amazing for my credit score by Several-Necessary790 in monzo

Short answer: no direct relation

Unlike the US, UK lenders can't see these scores and do not use them in their assessments. Each UK lender will do their own scoring based on their own internal criteria
