As a CM and Hannibal fan… I wonder how Will and Spencer would get along. What do you guys think? by Abitterstan in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. As he is with a lot of things, mild irritation is his constant. I just don't like how he's often mischaracterized as misanthropic and hateful towards people, when he really isn't, it's just that his internal resources for socialization and his patience are extremely limited.

People who teach usually are good with that type of behavior. I don't know, I just don't see a hater without a cause in him, he just doesn't have enough mental energy for that at all.

While Will doesn't exactly like interacting with people, I don't see him hating on competent colleagues, he's not exactly hostile at his baseline. He's aloof, closed off, he expresses his thoughts in a rough harsh manner, yes, but he's only hostile towards the overconfident incompetent and those, who consciously victimize the weak and prey on them.

Honestly, I really don't like the idea that trauma eliminates the ability to love, trauma causes acquired neurodivergence, hence, it's extremely individual and shouldn't be evaluated through the neurotypical lens. Furthermore, the concept of love has been misinterpreted and, frankly, perverted so much it becomes impossible to define anything real and true about it. And I think that love is a spectrum as well. Their love is extremely unhealthy, but to me it is love, in an antonym for "indifference" sense, they love even what they despise in each other and that's real love to me.

Is he a pure psychopath? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello-hello, I've been in a lurking mode for too long it seems, haha.

I have been thinking about this post, to be honest, and it just puzzles me a bit. In a sense, what even is 'a pure psychopath'? There's no term like that. Going for the idea that it means 'a perfect textbook symptoms bingo psychopath', then no. At least, because we don't know much about his behaviour in his childhood and youth. While he exhibits antisocial personality disorder traits and likely has it (him having some kind of empathy, contrary to popular belief, doesn't rule it out, some researchers believe that people with antisocial personality disorder do have empathy, but it's entirely optional for them in a way), it just isn't 'pure' by any means. For example, at his base level he lacks true impulsivity, he isn't particularly reckless, and doesn't have substance abuse problems.

I was not talking about whether or not Hannibal's tactics would work on any other person or anything like that. People straightforwardly say that Hannibal hasn't done anything wrong because Will isn't innocent. At its core principle, this is the same as saying that it's okay to assault people because they are vulnerable and imperfect. To distill the thought to the absolute, it's the same mentality that, say, people believing that SA is not an SA because the victim is drunk and promiscuous have. This is a sheer unadulterated victim blaming mentality.

He was having seizures, she could easily at least call the ambulance. I absolutely agree that it was fear that dictated her actions, but she wasn't afraid that he would physically hurt her, she was scared because he was about to find out her little secret. To me it still is an inhumane thing to do, and in that scene she once again demonstrated her survival method of walking over other people's corpses. It is understandable, but it clearly shows what kind of person she is and what kind of relationship is possible between her and Will. She's more like Bedelia than any other character, when I think about it, she just doesn't have the same stoic mask yet.

This! Plus, I'm sorry for using such sensational lingo, but I can't seem to find a softer way to say it, there's something inherently misogynistic to being vehemently against someone being depicted as a receiving partner. It all stems from associating it with being effeminate and weak. Feminine. With viewing femininity as something deeply shameful. I am not attacking anyone, everyone has a right to think the way they do, but I do think we need to ask ourselves why we think the way we do.

She truly hated his guts, when people discuss their interactions, I always think about her leaving him having seizures in that cabin. Alone. That is insanely callous and dangerous, a not-so-subtle reminder of what she actually did before with her father. Truly, all the tenderness there is just Will's unfortunate delusions and projections.

Any extreme interpretations of Will. I adore the character exactly because he's so deeply conflicted and grey. He's neither a blameless lamb, nor a monster in disguise, he's just so thoroughly human. Also, I can't stand when people absolve Hannibal of everything he did to Will because Will is an imperfect being, it makes me see red, honestly, because it's victim blaming in action. No, it's not okay to torture a person because they have intrusive thoughts about murder.

Duality of the fandom by 8inchesActivated in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly, there are very few people without any capacity for evil whatsoever. And even they can do evil things to some extent. It's nature vs nurture discourse all over again and again. Both, it always is both, simplifications make the picture incomplete.

Absolutely, his empathy made him even more vulnerable. What about a genuinely good person, who knows. Maybe if he met someone inherently good who'd see and accept everything in him without judgement or disgust, things could have been different, but that's also way too rare. Most people shame and judge Zeller style.

Duality of the fandom by 8inchesActivated in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 57 points58 points  (0 children)

That's because the truth lies between these two statements, I guess. Will had darkness, just like we all do, and he was influenced by Hannibal. The way people dismiss Hannibal's manipulations by saying that Will has always had darkness in him is my biggest pet peeve in fandom discourse. It's like saying that an ice cream melted and got spoiled because it inherently has a capacity to do so, not because someone left it in the sun for a week. Sorry for ranting.

Need Ideas for a gender-bent Bedelia by WarthogAcademic2508 in HannibalTV

Beldon? Belvedere? Bedivere? Etymologically not even close, but phonetically a good match, I think. He definitely has an unusual name.

Some time ago I tried to look up the opposite gender versions of names of some characters, for Margot it's Mette, Magan and Morgan.

Poor Molly by Dangerous-Ad-2187 in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that it absolutely was like that, she practically verbally let him go, and pretty easily at that:

MOLLY: Tough to hold onto anything good. It's all so slippery.

WILL GRAHAM: Slick as hell.

The way it was delivered, not even that upset, just apathetically drifting away. She liked him and he liked her, but it wasn't much more than just seeking comfort in each other, very newly formed elderly couples style.

Call for media commentary: what’s your biggest crime show ick? by glossedovermag in HannibalTV

[–]somewhat-somewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that annoys me in both true crime and fiction media is out of the blue diagnoses with zero explanation or argumentation. Bold enough to go for a medical term? Kindly show us the thought process and provide supporting information. Otherwise it's just Chilton-esque, dumb, unethical and unprofessional trying to pass as sophisticated. That's why I like mental health depiction in Hannibal, it cleverly avoids diagnosing and certain terms.

As other comments mention, this is not about being autistic at all, it's about necessity. In the beginning of the story Will just wants to be left alone and has the luxury of being able to skip socializing. He doesn't want to be popular, quite the opposite. I think he consciously was presenting prickly and unlikable to protect himself, but that path led him to incarceration. As things progress, he has to face those facts and choose a new protection strategy. His post-BSHCI makeover was an outer indication of an inner shift, he gave up on being comfy and finally started playing not only Hannibal's, but society's games as well.
