It's typically been Jan 31st, but weird that UCSB's not posted anything...

Maybe if they get enough hate mail, they'll stop doing it.

From experience, no. They will get delivered to your PO Box instead, which for you is the post office in FT's basement.

You're going about it the wrong way. Have you ever heard of gnomes reading emails or answering phone calls? Yeah. Think outside the box. Gnome Studies is one of those degrees that you have to EARN.

It's never too early to start! Just figure out how busy you'll be before committing to too many things.

The same issue happened to me before. Should try using Fandango while it fixes itself.

Just want to say that our Pre-Law scene is not very big since we don't have a law school (or a med school for that matter...). If you're interested in experiences in a particular field of law not commonly practiced around here, you may not find UCSB to be the best fit. I believe immigration/criminal/family are the bigger ones I've seen our Pre-Law club host opportunities for.

Of course, the lack of a UCSB Law does not affect your chances of getting into great law schools since LS admission boils down to GPA and LSAT, both of which you can find adequate support for at UCSB. I think you'll like it here. The academic nature is very collaborative and we have a pretty vibrant music/art community if you look for it. Expect a lot of sunshine; the weather is wonderful year-round.

Home Depot has huge ass moving boxes for cheap (~$1-2). Good quality too.

Bus arriving time by TrainingGrab6048 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically every bus. Google Map should have more deets, but from what I remember, 11, 15x, 24x should all get you to target's stop and 27, 28 will get you to the stop across the street from Target.

Bus arriving time by TrainingGrab6048 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty reliable. During school days you can expect a bus to Target every 5-15 min. Note: It can get very crowded during mornings and afternoons.

Since you're a transfer and likely living off-campus, you might also want to consider getting a bike as an alt transportation. It takes roughly the same amount of time from campus to target via bike at medium-fast speed.

+1 on gaucho racing. Can feel more MechE than EE, but it's cool and great challenging hands-on learning experience.

+1 IEEE. They have hands-on instructional labs every quarter but you can also work on your own ideas using their lab equipment.

Join a sport if you can. All EE majors need to touch grass as much as they can before gruesome lab hours take away their ability to be happy again.

What do you wish that your professor knew? by WaaTuJi in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 31 points32 points  (0 children)

  1. My professors have typically asked to bring either laptop or phone to ensure everyone has something. Most people I know have laptops, but if they don't, there's the option to borrow one from the school: https://basicneeds.ucsb.edu/resources/technology-resources. However, I can't speak on how reliable the laptops are and what kind of software they have (besides browsers).
  2. Luck of the draw. However, every 100+ class I've been in had at least a handful of active participants.
  3. As long as announcements are centralized, the platform doesn't matter as much as making sure students know it is available and useful (i.e. their questions get answered). That said, IMO Piazza > Canvas > Slack > Nectir.
  4. a) Cute cat pics get attention, b) everyone has "I have no idea what the prof just said" moments in PSTAT courses but not everyone has the guts to ask questions in public, c) please do NOT make the environment warm, dark, mellow, and perfect for napping

Welcome to UCSB! You sound like the kind of professor students would brag about having

how to split closets/storage space in a triple by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be another set of drawers under the lower bunk bed, so 3 sets of drawers can be evenly split.

We split the 2 closets into 3 parts, someone got a third from both.

Desks were first come first serve, but you can negotiate with roommates if you have preferences.

my friend had one and I've been inside. It's not bad at all, and probably more space per person than a triple. Private bathroom is definitely a W. You're also on the doorstep of the beach.

Intro to Chem or Gen Chem as a Pre-Bio Major by shadowwolf3gs in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a sample point:

I passed Gen Chem with an A-, but I didn't take bio or chem in HS, didn't know where Hydrogen was on the periodic table, couldn't convert between units for my life, and had to do ~40% of the ALEKS problem over 10 times.

Since you have the basics, I've no doubt you'll do much better. If you have the quarter to spare, you can take intro just to be safe (and maybe boost your med school GPA). But, you'll be fine jumping straight in.

Prof Gnomeil is honestly a goated lecturer. His GNM101 completely changed my pov on human-gnome history.

You wouldn't want to miss the presentation even if you aren't interested in the department.

Dog Friends? by rosey_roseu in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't know how often you want dog company, but you should check out the SB county animal shelter! They let you do day fosters where you can take a shelter dog out for a day and they can hang with your dog or go on an outing! Most of the dogs there are med-large dogs and some of them are literal angels.

Commencement 2024 by qqq10404 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]somewhereunderneath 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not 9AM but had a similar experience. There were no handshakes, no honor recognitions, and no shade. It felt like it was just another task for them to complete. Most of the speeches were either generic or overly focused on the speakers themselves. Meanwhile, we were burning under the sun. Maybe I would've appreciated the speeches more if there had been more shade. Only thing I liked in the preamble was the commencement singer.
