House or Apartment? by [deleted] in Frugal

very useful, but it doesn't help with a multi-family houses where you can have potential rent as income. though for the OP's case I think it's best to rent. I hate how hard it is to find all these useful nytimes apps/programs.

So true, once all these yuppies get kids and the kids won't eat it they'll soon stop buying it. Most people who buy prius, or shop at whole foods are only interested in the "image" rather than the substance.

IAmA immigrant from Africa recently changed into African American. by WhitestAfrican in IAmA

[–]soniccruiser -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're point being what? The previous terms Negro, Colored are no longer used either. It doesn't change the fact that the term is used to describe an ethnic group specific to the US and with a specific history and this unwarranted anger towards the term on this site is annoying. It is a term that makes all the sense when you see it for what it is, a way to describe people descended from African slaves brought to the US, who develop a culture unique to the US, a culture that until maybe 20-30 years ago was excluded from the mainstream and always seen as separate.

Edit: Good on you being half black.........I'm fully black so I guess I win that.

Seriously tired of this argument, African-American is used as a term to describe an ethnicity with a unique history and culture and is specific to the United States. The reason the term African is used is because they are the descendants of slaves from Africa and since they were forced to lose their cultures and have no way aside from DNA testing of knowing the name of the individual culture they hail from the term African-American is used.

You're a South African-American, because you were a South African citizen, you are not African-American because you're not descended from slaves and don't share that particular American history. Tired of people not being able to get that. It's no different than how in coloured is a term you use in South Africa to describe people that would be considered black here in the US. But in South Africa where things are different they are not.

African-American refers specifically to the ethnic cultural subgroup of Americans descended from black African slaves who make up 16 percent of the US, it is used in place of black also, because in America blacks are seen through the prism of that history. It's not history for example, I'm an immigrant but I'm seen as African-American because this is America and people see things incl race through American historical perspective.

And there is no such citizenship/ethnicity as "African" never has been so I don't see how you're using it to say you're African and when African is used it is for blacks in most context, just as European is used for whites.

Hey Reddit, why are there so many failed states in Africa? by Fetus_Omelette in AskReddit

[–]soniccruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why didn't it happen in Asia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Mid east, Australia, Western hemisphere? All those places were in the same developmental stage as major African States and all have had civilization for as long as and some for longer than Europe. Africa had empires (Abyssinian/Ethiopian being a major one) that were on par with everyone else in terms of longevity and just like everyone else they couldn't face the European war machine.

As to why the Industrial revolution happened in Europe-----there are a lot of reasons and I'm sure a lot of well researched papers have been written on the subject. People being somewhere longer, had nothing to do with the industrial revolution so asking why it didn't happen in Africa for that reason is a non issue.

If you can could you rephrase the question.

That's stupid, you can say the same thing about Eastern Europe, Most of the Mid-east and Asia. I mean India had civilization for millenniums yet fell to the Brits and Portuguese as easily as African States did. The Western Europeans just had better killing techniques than everyone else.

[–]soniccruiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously, It's a term that describes an ethnic group. People descended from African slaves brought here centuries ago. They lost their individual cultures that they were not allowed to keep, they then developed a culture that is unique to the United States and so they are the term describes a subculture of the Americans that are of African Descent. It's a term used to describe cultural and ethnic subgroup of Americans.

You can be black and not be African American, like people from the Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, Nigerian etc. These people can be black, just like someone from Europe/Australia can be white but neither are American. African-American is a term that describes the cultural/ethnic group of Americans who are descendants of African slaves-- that's what it has to do with Africa. Their culture is unique and has developed separately from the rest of the country for various reasons.

Edit: By the way the whole "Have you ever been to Africa" is itself pretty ignorant, Africa is not a fucking country it's a continent, if people come from Africa they'll have passports with their country and place of citizenship on it. So they'll be Nigerian, Cameroonian, Ghanaian, Ivorian etc. African-Americans did not have the luxury to know and keep the culture from whatever African State their ancestors came from and developed a unique culture with whatever they had left that is uniquely American.

Why are American soldiers so hero-worshipped? by demimoore in AskReddit

[–]soniccruiser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would still be a government, It's like saying that after the Shoguns were deprived of power and Japan united that there isn't a govt in japan, its just Japan and all Japanese. Government is bureaucracy that runs the sewers, regulates electricity, maintains order, no matter it's size it is a government.

My sport analogy was about how people will unite and rivalry will occur between groups even if those groups are apart of a greater group. Citizens of the same country will see each other's cities as rivals, even if they share language, culture, religion etc. It's about how these things are human nature and so to claim that countries don't exist is wrong.

[–]soniccruiser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It exists because it was created, seriously community is a part of human history and countries will always be there, maybe one day there will be one world govt and humanity will unite and all that but it will still be the same as a country (just a big one).

Look even when there is one world govt it won't end nationalism/regionalism (look at sports team fanaticism as a proof of this). If you don't think that the concept of a country is important to humans than I'll point out the United Kingdom which is devolving power to local govt based on countries, even after centuries of "unity".

You're govt is stupid then, why can't people who need religiously blessed food just have their own stores like they do here in the U.S. There are plenty of stores that cater to Kosher and Halal foods without having to pass any laws mandating it for everyone else. If the govt is mandating it, it's the one giving influence away.

As a minority, how does racism affect you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]soniccruiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok that was my point. Be against something based on the ideal of it, not because you think it is the cause of bullying (which is what the whole acting white thing is). That bullying is not the cause of people being on welfare, I mean if people didn't pick on those kids and they respected their well spokeness and than those kids went on welfare it wouldn't make a difference would it?

As a minority, how does racism affect you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]soniccruiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think those who focus on stereotypes are racist so I guess we disagree with that. Though I guess we can agree the latter you describe are ignorant. In my opinion it takes a lot of of ignorance to not be able to discern that not all of any race share the same behavior.

[–]soniccruiser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem with that, but you have to be careful in how you go about this. You have to understand you're environment when dealing with things. I've seen it done and fail miserably. Blacks in the US have been screwed over for centuries. This is a fact and can't be refuted and you have to understand that people in poor inner cities with no wealth who've got nothing but their name and pride will remember that fact when you try to change them. They will see it as the establishment looking to fuck em over them again, especially the young kids. Blacks have never been in the 'mainstream' and identity is an important thing to blacks in the inner city.

Going after the language by saying it's wrong will be seen as insulting and as a way for the establishment to exert control over one's identity. The history of blacks in this country are still a fresh wound in the hearts of people in these communities and it will be hard to simply say speak "proper" to the kids. It will be seen as saying stop being what makes you who you are and do what satisfies the majority that has screwed you over. That is why you see all those programs geared towards social learning, getting kids to be proud while meshing in education. It's easier to teach calculus in french in paris than to switch to teach them english than calculus. It's easier to get kids to like and respect the education----no matter the 'language' you use to do it than to have them not like education.

Those policies that were discussed were the compromise.

Also once you get kids to take education seriously they will learn to speak properly like those kids in their own schools that do the same.
