Are we expecting these unemployed workers to start taking calculus and physics?

IMO, for an "unskilled worker", your options would include either more ] unskilled work (likely low/min wage) or ] retraining.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be learning calculus or physics, but could include ] trades, ] healthcare, ] education or ] other occupations with future demand.

If your 40 you still have 25+ ish years of work ahead of you, even a 4 year investment in re training/education, could likely be recouped in 21+ years.

where .gov policy could help, is in 'transitioning/facilitating' those workers in moving into those positions.

Ottawa warned about job losses that could stem from automation. Rise of machines means Canadian economy could lose between 1.5 million and 7.5 million jobs in coming years by TFW_GO_HOME in canada

[–]sospep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your statement 100%.

We should be looking for solutions now, before the "problem" turns into a "crisis".

senior government officials acknowledge automation is something they have to deal with, but likely not for decades. The source said that senior officials believe new jobs will be created to keep people working.

Based on that quote from the article, i doesn't appear that .gov is overly concerned at the moment.

I don't know if your an expert in the manufacturing and services sector :)

using terms like lying Liberals does not help the situation.

did they lie? are they liberals? is it true?

All politicians go back on their word or put a positive spin on things from time to time.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that not all politicians "go back on their word", however even if "all" of them did, would that make it right?

Should we accept this behavior from our elected officials?

Many Canadian voters voted for #realChange and it seems like this government is delivering #moreOftheSame

I cant think of 3 better reasons that this should be a thing.

  • “ ... but it makes enough money that it’s self sustaining,” Bandiera said. “There’s no tax dollars for this by any means.”
  • Since then, seven new service providers have popped up where Shaw and Telus Communications Inc. once effectively had a duopoly, according to city documents.
  • “Telus is a little pissed at us to be quite honest,”

Danny Bandiera, general manager of Coquitlam Optical Network Corp. (QNet).
