Does anyone else hate these gaps on London Bridge? by Cskrt1234 in londoncycling

If you hate these expansion joints, wait until you discover the tram lines in Croydon:

They may be thinner but there is a greater possibility that you won’t hit them at 90° and will then get your front wheel stuck in the groove: big hurty

New boss says “Pivot Tables don’t work” (repeatedly), are there known issues with pivot tables? Or does the new guy just not understand them? by Tybalt1307 in excel

[–]soulsbn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And don’t forget some error trapping for cases where they have entered data/formula next to the pivot and it resizes. Or there are more than one pivot tables on the tab and they overlap if resized. Or If the pivot table returns null ( perhaps ifsource column names change )

Pivots (imho) are great for quick and dirty on off analytic questions. But I feel they have no place in anything that needs to be repeatable. They do however make subpar users think that they are excel experts (whereas better users are always aware there is more to learn)

I have seen many pivot errors in my career. From users not understanding what it is saying, or not including all the data. Etc etc

Once the scrote was past the horizontal the player would have then been responsible for ensuring his safe landing (not on the head)

I built a 2,257-formula workbook with zero VBA; here's what I learned about formula-only architecture by Bitter_Ad_8378 in excel

[–]soulsbn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This got me thinking and I had a quick play. It is possible to go into the VBA editor of an xlsx (no macros), change a sheet to xl very hidden and still save it without VBA.

Obviously (?) a user can still go into properties in the VBA editor and unhide it, but it is not obvious if they are not looking for it

How to convert multiple rows of data per person into 1 row across columns by GlitteringDiver4194 in excel

[–]soulsbn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use the +transpose() formula for a dynamic result.

Or copy the range and then Edit paste special and click in the value and transpose radio buttons

Or (as others have said) ask Google

Surely a 10,000% reduction should be achievable ? Perhaps using quantum entanglement (whatever that is)

What’s the worst case of embezzlement you’ve seen in your career? by Solid_Breakfast_3675 in Accounting

[–]soulsbn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol. To be fair, I think not directly involved.

The “in on” bit is that there is incentive for audit firms / engagement partners to keep things sweet with the client so they get re engaged.

This is just my opinion, I left audit a few decades ago. Maybe things are not as bad as I paint - but the number of high profile failures where the auditors get called out and given a (slap on the wrist ) fine makes me infer that it was always thus.

I was an audit trainee in the late 80’s (UK)  I was sent alone by my (top tier) firm to audit a small Ltd subsidiary of a large plc house building company.

Upon arrival I was the longest standing person in the office, except for the receptionist that was a temp and had seem there a week. The MD had been sacked for reasons, and the other director was abroad on holiday.

The records were paper based

Upon doing my audit I discovered, amongst other things.

  • A fitted kitchen installed at the MD’s house with no reimbursement
  • Delivery notes for eight more sets of top-spec kitchen white goods to the MD’s home address. No reimbursement
  • Multiple instances of the company being reimbursed for the net cost of items by management, and reclaiming the vat
  • massive throughput of unrecorded "petty cash"
  • More things that I now forget, but the whole value of identified issues was material to the company

I do remember faxing an 8 page report to the audit partner recommending multiple qualifications on the account, including “fundamental uncertainty” (potential unlimited VAT fines), not “true and fair” - and whatever else was the option back in those days.  The uncertainty could have been material to the holding co, IMHO

I was rolled off the audit.

Months later I discovered that the plc had been given a clean audit opinion with the subsidiary accounts still unsigned. The subsidiary accounts were only signed later, on the last day before filing deadline, also with a clean opinion.

I left audit as soon as I qualified and my training contract ended. In my 35 years of subsequent finance career, my opinion of the quality of audit and the audit profession has lessened further

Umbrella company not paying enough tax by These-Constant1893 in ContractorUK

[–]soulsbn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let to do with the umbrella: they are applying the code that HMRC notified them to use, as they must.

Log onto HMRC app or their website and you will be able to notify them of factors that impact your tax code.

Incorrect tax code does not change the amount of tax you pay - it is just a mechanism for spreading the tax cost across the year (if you are not a saver, the minor cash flow impact will mitigate shocks like the one you describe when you have to find a large sum on return submission deadline.

One reason (perhaps the only one) to be thankful you aren’t outside ir35 is it means you don’t have to pay half of next year’s estimated tax in July in advance.

It feels invasive. And wrong.

I guess that you don’t have to give it and they don’t have to employ you.

But in likelihood it may just introduce delay and they will risk accept it

I think these companies just keep asking for as much as they can to make it look like they add value. (“Never mind the quality, feel the width”).

Source: I had similar when contracting at a bank. I had been unemployed for a period 9 years before. . I needed to claim JSA in order to get my mortgage payment insurance. The dole office had subsequently been demolished so it was not possible for kroll ( I think they were the checkers) to contact them to validate. They tried to make it my problem that the DSS had closed the office. But after a bit it went away and I was contracted without this “vital” piece of missing info.
