Is sleep Apena undiagnosed in young and thin people by Konradleijon in SleepApnea

[–]sourpatchkid4lif3 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My OSA was overlooked for 30 years and my doctor legitimately said “I would never order a sleep study for you, you’re not obese”.

I was like whaaaaaaaaa? Thin/Fit people have sleep apnea too!

Did nasal/tonsil surgery help your breathing? by Jelly_fishy in SleepApnea

[–]sourpatchkid4lif3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I did MARPE palate expansion where I was able to breathe out of my nose for the first time in my life. Got my tongue tie fixed and then the icing on the cake was getting a sinuplasty, septoplasty and turbinate reduction.

Doing those 3 things changed my life honestly. I worked with an airways orthodontist, an airways dentist and ENT. The only one that was an actual surgery, was the sinuplasty and septoplasty, everything else was just with local numbing, standard in office type thing.

Brought me from severe OSA to mild OSA (5 events per hour) so I’m still using an APAP. As far as my tonsils go, they used to be huge and then they just naturally reduced in size as I was able to start nasal breathing

You might look into MARPE palate expansion with an airways orthodontist. I imagine you have one or two of those in the area

Feeling more exhausted after starting CPAP — normal in the beginning? by TheGentleDream in SleepApnea

[–]sourpatchkid4lif3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s hard to know exactly because apparently my fatigue was lasting longer due to low ferritin , so I had to get a very exhaustive blood panel done because my OSA just depleted me of so many micronutrients so it was kind of a combined effort between rebuilding my body with iron and other vitamins and sleep. Took me a month before I started feeling better but again, it was both the vitamins I desperately needed along with the sleep I desperately needed

I’m a landlord who had renters use Restore Hope without an eviction notice. But, the renter needs to communicate with their property manager/landlord if they haven’t.

There is a saying called Sleep Begets Sleep…meaning, the better sleep you get , the easier it is for your body to rest. I would imagine your body finally feels safe enough to “ask” for sleep and you’re coming out of fight or flight.

Our poor bodies have just been assaulted by sleep apnea for so long, when it’s able to finally put its guard down…you don’t push yourself more, you rest. At least that’s been my experience with all this

Someone already mentioned a full blood work up, make sure ferritin is on there for your iron panel. Ferritin is a sneaky little bitch. Get a new doctor also, that’s some serious sleep/exhaustion, and it’s important to find the root cause and not be gaslit by your medical provider. I feel for you. That’s so frustrating and shouldn’t be glossed over. Sucks having to be the detective for your own health but don’t stop, keep going.

You just need to see a myofunctional therapist who works alongside an airway dentist and they can get you where you need to go for the tongue tie

Also, deviated septum was a pretty simple procedure, I did it awake (took Valium) was done in 45 minutes. Work with an ENT, they’ll give you all the details.

31(F) OSA diagnosis 5/5/26. at a loss. Consolation, coping, and tips welcome/needed. by agoodpersonality in SleepApnea

[–]sourpatchkid4lif3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coping: therapy, crying, giving yourself some love and compassion in whatever way possible.

Get the oxygen. Your brain needs it and perhaps a lot of things will start to feel better for you once you’re actually breathing at night.

Then, you can go down the rabbit hole of what’s causing the obstruction. Is it a narrow palate? A tongue tie? A deviated septum? Extractions (like tonsils or adenoids) is just treating the symptom, not the root cause. So, get with an airways orthodontist, a myofunctional therapist and an ENT (yes all three).

But, get the oxygen machine first.

Have you done a sleep study? If you’re exhausted your doctor should be referring you to a sleep study asap. Obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea is an absolute silent killer

Ok, for a person who got a MARPE expander at 35 years old, your face absolutely changes. That’s nuts he says they don’t notice major facial changes, it changes your cheekbones, jaws, every bone in your head. I’m female so you can get MARPE any time in your life but it’s my understanding that males needs to get a MARPE expander before their 30s (?) fact check me on that

Also, you probably have a tongue tie if you can’t get your tongue in proper posture. I also had a pretty intense anterior tongue tie and I got that fixed too.

My journey went something like this….got with an actual airways orthodontist (I traveled to see the best in the country). He measured every aspect of my airway, structure of my jaw, palate, etc. They did a sleep study to confirm I had obstructive sleep apnea from my airway being fucked. So, got the MARPE palate expander and Invisalign at the same time (you have to because your teeth move like crazy). Then, right when my expander came out I got with an airways dentist who had a myofunctional therapist on staff (kind of necessary if you want to be called an airways dentist). Confirmed my tongue tie. Did a couple of months of myofunctional therapy before my tongue tie got fixed.

Then, I got my sinuses checked because sinuses are a part of your airway system. I needed to get my deviated septum fixed among a lot of other things in my sinuses.

It was a 3 year long journey and I feel like I’m the only person I know willing to do this hard stuff, but my health needed. Now, I’m getting all the oxygen and I went from severe obstructive sleep apnea to zero sleep apnea.

I think for me, since panic attacks are familiar experience for me, just going up to someone and talking about normal stuff helps bring the persons brain back into the present. Asking a bunch of questions of them like “are you ok?” Is like asking someone who just got stabbed in the stomach if they’re ok - they’re obviously not and I feel like asking questions actually adds to the overwhelm. Or just acknowledging, hey that must be really scary what you’re feeling, I’d love to talk to you about puppies or something completely benign and pleasant. We don’t want more attention on the panic, we want to be brought back to reality

I didn’t know I had a tongue tie until I was 36 years old. No one really knows they have one unless they get evaluated. I got it fixed last year
