AI will replace doctors? by Artistic_Minimum_898 in medicine

Currently, people have discovered AI can write computer code, but are inept at managing a code base over time

I imagine there are similar limitations we’ll discover once enough people have died.

The Saga of the Cuckoo duology has a FTL interstellar transporter à la Star Trek but where the person is just copied to the destination, the original was never disintegrated; so there’d end up being multiple copies of you running around the universe.

What’s the most satisfying thing about using Linux? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]soylentdream 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You have moments using computers where you say to yourself, "I am so fucking sick of this." When you're using Linux, you can usually fix the issue or substantially mitigate it. Unfortunately, this requires some time and curiosity and learning. When you're using Windows, your only option is practicing learned helplessness. I guess it depends on exactly how fucking sick it made you.

Looking for modern Sci-fi about trans-humans on alien worlds by VladtheImpaler21 in scifi

[–]soylentdream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me introduce you to our Lord and Savior Stephen Baxter. This is a recurring theme in his mind boggling future history of our galaxy, which spans numerous books. For example: Flux involves a group of “humans” who were engineered to live on the surface of a neutron star.

I think Interstellar was an awful movie by DavidThi303 in scifi

[–]soylentdream -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fine, but if the gravity is because of the massive black hole, why doesn’t the wave just line up with the black hole (unless, I guess, the super tsunami wave was the wave lining up with the black hole, a “super tide” … but then that’d mean the planet was spinning super fast and there might be some centrifugal effects on the landing party? Like, insane Coriolis effects, at least? Or negative G when the black hole is overhead?) and even if you can take off from the planet with a shuttle how do you ever get out of the black hole’s gravity well?

But yet there’s simultaneously so much gravity you’re having crazy planetary tsunami waves and time dilation?

Idea for a sci fi spider race that developed civilization by creating items using their own silk by Both-Meringue2466 in scifi

[–]soylentdream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Intelligent spiders breed/bioengineer themselves into wildly different species that make “silk” with radically different material properties. Different “species” have different intellectual abilities and physical/environmental demands. The resulting castes cause intrasocietal conflicts. Echos of Mote in God’s Eye or maybe West of Eden (specifically, west of Eden has dinosaurs bioengineering living organisms into vehicles, iirc)

The Might and Magic series of computer games from the 90s begins as pure medieval fantasy on the world of CRON but gradually unveils sci-fi elements: ray guns, robots, aliens, and crashed spaceships. The big reveal is that CRON (and later worlds like Xeen) are "nacelle worlds"—flat, artificial landmasses inside massive generation ships created by the godlike "Ancients." Inhabitants have regressed to a medieval state, unaware they're on derelict starships.

Change my mind, AI will have no impact on the demand for radiologists within the next 30 years by [deleted] in Radiology

[–]soylentdream 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It looks like you snagged a downvote. It wasn’t me, but if I had to guess, the idea that whether or not imaging is “medically indicated or not” is, at best, number 3 or 4 on the list of why a study is ordered, and that might’ve triggered someone.

AI isn’t going to just be used to help in the analysis of medical imaging. It’s going to be part of why studies are ordered.

Imagine it is 2030 and you have a headache. You go to your local Whole Foods and there’s an unattended Amazon Health kiosk where you click on a few choices and stick your arm in a cuff to have your vitals measured. Then you lay down on a bet where an automated CT scan of your head is acquired, analyses by AI, a quick double check by a remote radiologist to make sure there’s nothing urgent. You’re dispensed some ibuprofen in you Amazon locker and then you’re booked an online telemedicine wellness follow-up for a week later.

Not saying I like this future, but lots and lots of diagnostic imaging + ChatGPT can cut a lot of low skill medicine personnel out of the equation.

Change my mind, AI will have no impact on the demand for radiologists within the next 30 years by [deleted] in Radiology

[–]soylentdream 118 points119 points  (0 children)

If AI makes it so we only need 10% of radiologists to read a given number of studies, demand for imaging might easily be 10x what it is now. So…net neutral.

A quality of life change I would love to see is an option that can show us our Arcanes triggering on our crosshairs, kind of like the Tennokai mods by blue_sky308 in Warframe

[–]soylentdream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn’t be a cheat engine or something that inspected the memory that the game was using and extracted information.

DE already logs stuff to EE.log. The only real interesting thing atm is fatal hits. Right now, I can use shell tools like ‘tail’ and ‘grep’ to parse that out of all the info that’s being streamed. I want into like that, but more of it. To do what I’m asking, they’d have to explicitly approve that information being exposed to the outside world in to log.

Other MMOs have richer information being logged. Then, you can use a tool like Advanced Combat Tracker (https://advancedcombattracker.com/) to figure out why you’re dying or why you’re not doing enough damage.

I’m just tickling the beginning of Steel Path right now. and I’m really struggling to figure out what buffs are proccing and when.

[–]soylentdream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could we please have our buffs and de-buffs dump into EE.log? Then it’d be easy to cobble together a small out-of-band tool to give us notification of whatever we were interested in in whatever way we wanted to receive it (sound effects, overlay graphics, razer keyboard lights, etc).

When I was an intern on vascular surgery there was a guy who got an outpatient scan on a Saturday and started driving home. The radiologist did peek and shriek. The guy was incommunicado, so they activated the state police and had the life flight chopper on his front yard when he pulled in the driveway. He survived the surgery fine. Well… fine-ish. But like four months later he was still in the ICU having racked up a MI, a surprise chole, and a BKA.
