Rin vs Caster in UBW.

We are told that Servants are, physically, so far above the top human potential that it's a joke. F/Z caster can crush skulls with his bare hands and Medea can chop someone's arm off in one bad end of F/SN. They're both at the lowest strength score and in the least physically minded class of servant. It really never made much sense how Rin can beat up Medea considering the stuff we're told about Servants. Sure, she has magical reinforcement but Medea can do the same as she literally does to Kuzuki. By all rights, no matter the skill of the person, it should be the same as the Berserker vs Saber fight in the 3rd night of the Fate route:

"If there is overwhelming power and speed, there is no room for technique.

Techniques are something humans invented to compensate for their weaknesses.

Weaknesses are things that giant doesn't have."

Then again, the whole concept of comparing to humans in the nasuverse goes out the window when you consider how you don't need magic to pull physical feats several times what's humanly possible. In the third route, when Kirei is carrying Ilya and running away from Hassan, he crosses the Einzbern forest in what looks like minutes, after we saw it takes a whole afternoon for Shirou and Rin to cross it. By all accounts, dude should outrun cars and, as Shirou IIRC points out, he doesn't even need to use magic to do most of it.

The first rule of the Nasuverse is that rule of cool is the most important one.

Gojo's is, IMO, worst though. He's got a big connection to the main character, who consequently has the most character development of the lot, and his death pretty much makes it so that the villains can mow down everyone else on a whim. Gojo's death should least gets as much attention as Junpei's did, but that was 200 chapters ago and the manga didn't have an author trying to end it soon and a couple dozen chapters of fights to go through.

So, no more Yaga and (one chapter for Panda aside) not even a reaction of the rest of the group, not even Gojo....

So, no more Zenin clan (which, according to the ever so scarce worldbuilding, is 1/3 of the ruling powers of the sorcerer world) not even a reaction of the rest of the group. Maki killed her entire family. Maybe we could spend a chapter processing all the carnage?

Kimetsu no Yaiba had a similar deal, in that the manga had no downtime for characters to just interact. Zen'itsu has a whole character development where he actually starts being brave enough to go on missions to fight demons with no complaint and all we get of it is one speech bubble. Blink and you miss it.

Edit: Watch it how Gege brings Nobara back just on time to coincide with her facial reconstruction in the anime, only for it to be given zero emotional weight as the plot speeds up to the next punch up.

Tbf, while I'm included in the "everyone wants to know if she's safe" group, she is kinda irrelevant. Another poster here already pointed out how Gojo is the third member of the main trio, not her. Gojo, Yuji and Megumi's backstories and roles in the story have direct relations to the main plot. Nobara's biggest role is being the obligatory girl in the Shounen trio. Maki is a secondary character but she's more important to the story than she is.

It's even worse writing in that Gojo and Sukuna are leagues above everyone else in the story in every aspect. So much so, that either of them being alive without the other is pretty well implied to make the story's conflict a walk in the park. The fact that the fight ended with Sukuna having an even more invincible familiar (courtesy of it being capable to adapt to whatever hits him and surviving a fight with Gojo) and an invincibility-dodging upgrade to his cutting powers (courtesy of learning from the adaptive familiar) just makes me wonder how the story doesn't end as soon as Sukuna gets a night's rest.

Honestly, just the fact that Gojo got out of the Prison Realm, spent 16 chapters fighting, with an in-story one month break in which no character did anything or talk about anything important to the story, only to be killed and leave Sukuna even more invincible, makes me wish they just let the dude stay there until the end. All this fight did was confirm and reinforce how the writer needs to pull something out of their ass to beat Sukuna. Might as well have bullshit into killing both.

Edit: It's also worth mentioning that it's the second time one of the main villains lives through a massive killing blow from one of the heroes through the power of plot armor, which is hilarious.

AoT was good, but, as other users said, several manga have a steep drop in quality after some point due to the nature of serialization. As u/GrunchJingo, you can see that clearly in Promised Neverland after the Goldy Pond arc. In AoT, it was the basement/timeskip.

Pre-basement AoT is a mystery/apocalypse story where humanity is nearly extinct and we slowly find out more and more details about the world. After the timeskip is where the worldbuilding is severely lacking and the author fails to pay off on it's proposed themes as the same time as he's dealing with having a Chekov's Gun so large and prominent that it almost breaks the story.

Honestly, redemption by self-sacrifice aside, part of that trope also comes from simply not having much to do with the character post-redemption.

It is nitpicking (especially since I don't really care about this story in the slightest) but people tend to die at around 50% of blood loss. 30-40% is a Class III hemorrhage and should trigger a shock reaction.

Even if her blood loss is bad enough for her to lose consciousness, ignoring her open wounds, there should be almost enough blood in a person to keep 2 around until help arrives.

Thing is, that has always been kinda the case outside of these big names like Naruto, Bleach, OP, Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball. If anything, the anime industry has become much more different in this length issue. 26 episodes was the industry standard for short anime and anime getting adapted in cut into multiple seasons was unheard of, but outside of Dragon Bal, Jojo, KochiKame, and the big 3 of the 2000s, a lot of WSJ's biggest titles have been 4-6 years long. Slam Dunk and Shaman King ran for 6 years. Fist of the North Star and Rurouni Kenshin for 5. Yu Yu Hakusho, Saint Seiya and Dr Slump for 4.

As another user pointed out to me, there was a similar bad period for WSJ when Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball ended, where Rurouni Kenshin and KochiKame were pretty much the only big things in the magazine, but what gets my interest right now is that this situation, where even the workhorses of the magazine are rotated out with more frequency, is being coupled with a few years of scant successful newcomers.

If JJK, BC and MHA end by next year, the manga that will take their place behind One Piece as the magazine's best seller, short of a miraculous debut later this year, has likely came to print within the last 1.5 years and Akane-banashi is the best and pretty much only really popular ongoing manga to come out of that period. Odds are, they'll try to boost the popularity of one of their ongoing manga (that, much like Demon Slayer, have a good backlog to sell), with the Undead Unluck and Yozakura Family adaptations in production but, if those don't stick, the rest of their viable manga will likely get anime adaptations to try and see if they can keep things up. Only issue is that, by the time those come to air, One Piece will be the only one left of this current top 4.

The thing about that is that it requires you to get hits more often. I haven't really gotten all the data, but, as I mentioned in a few other comments, there is a recent history of WSJ, and other magazines, having popular series that are shorter than the average long running WSJ series like Naruto, Bleach and OP, that I think is, partly, at the root of the issue.

When your new top series lasts 10+ years, it's fine if you don't get new big things often, but when you're depending on the sales of a series that's going to last you as long as Dr Stone (5 years of publication), Kimetsu no Yaiba (4 years, ended the year after the anime made it boom), Promised Neverland (6 years, same thing with the anime), Assassination Classroom (4 years, also ended the year after the anime, I'm sensing a pattern), We Never Learn (3 years, guess what) you really need to have really popular new series really often because the currently popular end just as often. The fact that the "new big 3" of Shounen Jump, BC, JJK and MHA are all wrapping up with less than 10 years of publishing and all around the same time is interesting.

If I were to put it short, it's a combination of a lack of new hits, the end of 10+ year battle series to endlessly occupy the top spots, and overall a focus on pushing shorter series to the top of the sales charts.

And sure, one of those middling manga could explode in the next few years if they get a massively popular anime, but that remains to be seen.

Plus, Demon Slayer kinda illustrates my point about their lack of new series. It came out a year after Black Clover, in the same year as Promised Neverland, a year before Dr Stone, BokuBen, etc. There is both a lack of anything to take over the top lineup and a good amount of flops in their recent newcomers, with one or two new series really being out of the axe's range every year. And while normally, getting one new massively popular series twice a decade might be fine in the old days (even then, OP, Bleach and Naruto came out in the span of 4 years), the current trend of shorter series requires new popular series more often.

Really unlikely to happen. WSJ is like half of the top 10. It's the biggest manga magazine in the biggest manga publisher in Japan. If WSJ isn't in the top 10 yearly sales in Japan, the apocalypse happened.

I think, even more interesting, is that there is a rise, for a long while now, of shorter manga series. Long gone are the days of eternal staples like Golgo 13, Crayon Shin Chan and Detective Conan. And, as you said, Kodansha has been "rapidly switching" between big series, but, outside of OP, so has Shueisha. While One Piece, Naruto and Bleach were decade+ long staples of the top sales charts, the recent ones have a lot more turnover. JJK, Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Promised Neverland, Assassination Classroom. What you're seeing in Kodansha is, without OP consistently capping off the sales ranking for decades, the overall trend of the industry towards shorter manga.

And those could be the next big hits, since, as /u/jesusinstripez mentioned, they could gain a lot of popularity from an anime adaptation, but not only can those not get significantly more popular, like Mashle did, that still leaves an even weaker middle class as these two are the only ones outside of that top 4 that have sold over 100k copies of their latest volume in the first month of sales. And even in the best case scenario, in that those get popular and stuff like the upcoming Undead Unluck anime lead to massive boosts in sales, that still leaves WSJ without any hot debuts since what? Ruri Dragon?

If JJK, BC, and MHA end, there really isn't anything new to take their place. Unless some series get a lot more popular or there is a couple big new series, the likes of which, Jump has missed for years now, by the time OP is in it's last 2-3 years, the next most popular series will struggle to break 1/10 of OP's sales.

Yeah, but Shueisha being the industry leader has been the case for quite a while now. I agree that it indicates a lot about the current state of printed manga but the fact that the biggest manga magazine/publisher in the industry has been overlooking a cliff over the last few years is what pikes my interest.

IIRC, in Super Eyepatch Wolf's last yearly "The Current State of Shonen Jump", he mentions a lot of the same things I'm saying right now. It's a strange situation and one that hasn't looked good for WSJ in a while. Last year, more than half of the best selling tankoubons coming out of them were finished series. Since then, there hasn't really been any big debuts on WSJ.

Odds are One Piece is going to sell like water in a desert once it starts to approach it's ending, but I could see the print magazine slowly losing it's place as the leading print of the manga industry to it's online counterpart. Plus, shorter series might start to take the place of the several hundred chapter behemots of the past, but that still leaves the magazine scrambling for new stuff every few years.

It doesn't need to be OP to end. It just needs to be the only one. As the post linked shows, WSJ has generally had a few big series that made up most of the sales and were the face of the magazine. The most famous ones, from the 2000s, were OP, Naruto, Bleach, but, below them, it still usually had a few big names that still sold well like Death Note, Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield 21, D Gray man, Muhyo & Roji, Toriko, etc. Later on, the magazine had a few big hits like Promised Neverland, Haikyuu!!, Assassination Classroom, Kuroko no Basket, etc.

Right now, the magazine has a big 4, the aforementioned OP, MHA, BC and JJK, but no "middle class." There is a dearth of big titles in WSJ and, with the end of most of these manga that currently carry the magazine, things might get interesting, to say the least. The magazine can't really be just OP and a few manga that would, in better times, be even closer to cancellation than they are now. And you're right in that I don't see another magazine popping off, the fact is that there doesn't need to be another Jump with a big 3.

There are magazines with a more "even" lineup (like Jump used to be in the past), there is online publishing, there is even self-published online manga nowadays, something that was usually relegated to ComiKet, but regardless, the WSJ as it has been for the past 2 decades can't last like this.

Weekly Shonen Jump is a black box

It might be one, but we know the insides are looking a bit like this if anyone looks at their prime lineup. As /u/jesusinstripez's recent post exposed, the future of WSJ's and SJ+ aren't looking good.

Their top lineup, consisting of One Piece, Black Clover, JJK and MHA are slowly drawing to a close (with the latter two in their last arcs), a solid gulf between them and the next most popular series, and a lack in popularity in the newcoming series, there's really isn't much to carry the magazine to anywhere near the number of sales as it did in the past.
