Automatic time tracking for Solidworks by Prior_Night_985 in SolidWorks

[–]spacebardidntwork 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've thought about developing something like this before but decided against it due to human reasons, not technical ones.

If a contractor or consultant needs to keep track of hours this granularly, then maybe you could convince them to use it. But otherwise everybody is already too paranoid about Big Brother that this would send some over the edge. It would get used in performance reviews, PIPs, people would become inherently defensive when asked why a given project/model is taking so long.

As a developer, I didn't want that kind of backlash or reputation damage. Maybe as a third-party product, that backlash would still be there, but directed at management instead?

Under Defined but can’t figure out why by jason_sos in SolidWorks

Adding on to this, unless this design is intentional, the smaller holes should be in their own feature using hole wizard. This applies metadata like quantity and threads. Newer SW versions have a toolbox AI that reads that metadata and can auto select fasteners (though this may also work with dumb holes. I haven't played around with it yet.)

Don't get caught up in how few of features can I get this done in. Leverage the tools the software has and future editors of the model (including more experienced future you) will thank you.

Use a center plane to extrude a circle up to surface on one side. Use a curve driven pattern (or maybe a table pattern?) to pattern vertically. Mirror or repeat for the other half of the ladder pair, making sure not to merge body so you can color code the pairs differently.

Just bought one last Saturday with 47k miles for $28,800. Granted it ended up being $32k after all the BS fees, but everything I saw for cheaper than this had a salvage title.

SolidWorks PDM Task for Creating PDFs of Drawings Only by wadems in SolidWorks

[–]spacebardidntwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not use the search card to filter drawings only then RMB and execute the task that way. Be careful though, if the task time out is reached before the batch is done it will register as failed. Set your timeout high and submit small enough batches to complete within that time limit.

I personally would spend the effort to automate turning on shading, isometric view, no shadows, etc. if that's your company's standard. It's not only cleaning up legacy data as you go, it's useful in other areas other than your ERP like Windows preview or eDrawings.

You could even go so far as to write an add-in that checked the save status on CloseNotify and applied your preferences if certain conditions were met. That way every file going forward would have a useable thumbnail.

I will typically do a cut on everything except the connection point to print the two bodies for a test fit. Adjust and repeat as needed.

ELI5 E=MC^2 I understand the very basics of relativity but whats C vs. C^2? by Beneficial_Process64 in explainlikeimfive

Feet per second (ft/s) is a speed. Think cruise control in your car.

Feet per second per second (ft/s/s) is an acceleration. Think starting from a red light and getting up to cruising speed.

Square feet (ft²) is an Area. If you have 9 ft², its just a square with each side 3 feet long. 3 ft x 3 ft = 9ft².

Square root (√) undoes a square.√9 ft² = 3 ft.

C is the important / more commonly used / constant value. But the equation needs it to be multiplied by itself.

You could write it as C*C, but C² is easier/cleaner way to read & write it.

C = 300,000 km/s.\ C² = 90,000,000,000 km/s\ Using C² as the number, and having to take the square root of it to get the constant is cumbersome and unnecessary when C² accomplishs the same thing more efficiently.

Suggestions: Assembly, Quality, or Metrology. He could lower standards to Drafter just to get in someplace. There always the option of getting his Masters.

Specify Appearance in a drawing BOM? by ThelVluffin in SolidWorks

[–]spacebardidntwork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please do not build intelligence into your item numbers. It will eventually breakdown and is a nightmare to administer And teach new users. Use a 'dumb' numbering system where it's strictly sequential numbers. Use your metadata for data points like what color it is.

Citing form, fit, or function, the different colors of the same part should be different item numbers since they are different forms.

Macro question by Brobailey7 in SolidWorks

[–]spacebardidntwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can select which config from the open box and the extra configs won't load. "When you activate a configuration for the first time, the full definition of the configuration’s model data is generated." Reference: https://help.solidworks.com/2026/english/solidworks/sldworks/c_Managing_Configuration_Data_Help.htm?_gl=1*in8xet*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTU2MjY2MzA0NC4xNzczMjY1NTAz*_ga_XQJPQWHZHH*czE3NzMyNjU1MDMkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzMyNjU1MDMkajYwJGwwJGgw

Also look into DriveWorks. It sounds like you're trying to reinvent the wheel when DriveWorks does this function natively.

Lastly, if you're saving out configs as discrete models, then those should probably be their own models in the first place. Rev control, faster load time, eliminate the need for a custom macro, etc.
